Help me guys. There's this 2600 game I used to play a lot in my childhood and I can't find it holy fuck.
You play as a woman at the top of a building and you throw plant pots on spiders trying to climb up there.

Over-criticized game. I borrowed cart from kid up the street and was the only one on my block that could finish up all levels. It was frustrating but not impossible....

100% wrong, but thanks for playing

pitfall was the first true platformer to have widespread appeal before mario 1

hero is interesting, but not even that great of a game, not a true platformer or technically as impressive as pitfall 2... it's just been memed to death as le hidden gem by the e-celebs you watch

How do you define true platformer?

>> No.5002182

>>5002146
I'm sure he means because it has jumping - HERO and Major Havok and other maze type adventure games used jet packs. He's sort of discounting other arcade platformers like Donkey Kong probably for being linear and I guess games like Manic Miner for not having "widespread appeal". It's all pretty subjective but I do enjoy Pitfall 2 more than HERO although Montezuma's Revenge is pretty good too and also came out in 84. Pitfall 2 just got a real jump off the name which was pretty important in video games released 83-86.

>> No.5003610

>>5002182
Name recognition is always good, but Pitfall 2 was a huge leap technically over 1.

1 is more akin to Donkey Kong. 2 more to Super Mario Bros., or even Metroid, with its multi-level exploration. .

The physics are still 100% pitfall. They just said "what if he could go deeper?" worked up the pretty-good respawn system, stole Jungle Hunt's swimming mechanics and developed a really good big map since cheaper memory was pretty much the extent of the technical advancement. A big part of why it was so great was because it was still Pitfall just well expanded, like Mario Brothers to Super Mario Brothers. Games like HERO and Montezuma's Revenge were just as expansive thanks to having access to the same bigger roms but they didn't have proven, beloved physics.

>> No.5004667

>>5003639
The only downside to hero’s physics was the slight delay on the jet pack.

Even though games like Exile and Solar Jetman have their appeal, "floaty" physics have always been unsatisfying and the jet pack rationale is always immediately suspect.

I still never beat this. The coolest part was when an enemy torpedo (whatever they shoot) hit your screen, as if it's exploding against your TV glass. Very advanced for the 2600.
