I have a long flight coming up, 15 hours. What’s the best portable console for retro gaming? I’m thinking about getting a 2ds xl.

Second question - how autistic is it for a 35 year old Boomer to be playing a gameboy on a flight?

Windows tablet or laptop with gamepad although the 2DS may have longer battery life if you can't plug in

As acceptable as it's become to use phone and even play phone games in public, I have almost NEVER seen an adult play a gaming device in public and when it has they they've been traditional college age playing Vita or something. I would say either give it a pass be prepared to gain people's attention and not usually in an approving away. Personally I never play handhelds anymore as I figure it would always be better to wait to play on a bigger screen, but that's just me.

Op here, this is what I’m thinking. It’s going to be some random Chinese person on a work flight that sees me, so I don’t really care. Ordered the 2DS XL. Roughly 16 hours of plane travel each way, so I’ll have a lot of time to game even with sleeping.

Any recs on virtual console? I’m keen to try sword of hope II, since I loved the first one as a kid.

I recently softmodded mine and loaded it up with no intro sets of a bunch of platforms. It's not perfect, but pretty playable. Retroarch has been ported to it as well, which is pretty cool.

Depending on the firmware it comes with, you may need one of these cartridges for $20. Not sure what version new 2DS XLs are shipping with, but if you don't update it and try to softmod it straight out the box you should be fine to do it without.

Hack your 2ds xl as well. It lets you emulate GBA, GBC, NES by injecting them as .cia files. You can also install other emulators on the hacked 3ds to play pretty much everything else. There's even a port of ScummVM
