What are some good retro games to play when you're depressed?

Something with bright colors and feelgood music, Kirby or Mother usually cheers me up.

Maybe it's because it's my favorite game of all time but Super Mario RPG makes me really happy despite finishing it countless times.

Any Kirby game except Avalanche or Dream Course helps too for the pastel air and overall happy vibes.

I feel you a lot, anon, I'm super depressed myself too right now, I've been drawing some fanart to keep my mind distracted. The worst times are when I'm alone with my thoughts.

If you want bright colorful comfy games, I recommend smb2, mario land 2, mario world, Wario land 2, Earthbound, outrun, ape escape, kirby games. Platformers are often comfy

Also, using save states, I find brutally hard games like kaizo mario really comforting when I'm down. The difficulty makes the game really absorbing, and overcoming a seemingly impossible obstacle after dozens of tries is incredibly satisfying.

Yeah I forgot about those! Those games are super comfy. There's also a third one for tg-cd but I don't know much about it.

Deja vu on nes is pretty relaxing. Does anyone know of any other retro games with a film noir atmosphere?

Alter Ego.

This game unironically changed my life. You play through life, making decisions and trying to get through childhood, then adulthood. It was weird - when life was set up like a game, it became really easy to see what the “right” choice is in most situations because I wasn’t emotionally involved in the moment. I then realized I need to do that in my life and detach s bit when I make big decisions. I went from college drop out that was washing dishes to barely pay rent, and now I’m dentist making 200k. I sincerely credit Alter Ego with my turn around.

That doesn't solve any depression though. You might as well just abuse drugs, but that would mean you would drop out of society. So be a good boy and stay as a goy in the machine instead of doing something that actually will fix your depression.

Exercise and accomplishing achievable goals is exactly how you solve depression although drugs are the more mainstream "solution". I'm curious how you actually believe one solves depression if neither of those two options.

>> No.4997272

To wallow in it? Anything that has a "persistent" quality to it. If there are places you can visit in it that never change, but has the illusion of changing, that's right up depression's alley. Point-and-click adventure games, maybe not the silly ones, are perfect for this. If the game lets you go at your own pace and doesn't really reward or penalize you for making any one decision, it's perfectly analogous to major depression.

No shit it doesn't, because depression can't be solved instantaneously. It takes time and effort to work yourself out of depression. Doing some cleaning is a small step toward that, but you need to continue taking steps and continue moving forward if you want to crawl out of depression and stay out.

Yeah, it’s ranked high in depression. I think it’s because we don’t really talk and interact with patients, kind of inflict pain, and every day is the exact same. For me, it’s been important to focus on creating meaning in my personal life as well.

iirc Peterson has a few opinions on depression given that he and his daughter both suffer from it. The main one is to engage in activity that gives you meaningful progress towards a worthwhile goal.

But also diet can cause depression (and not necessarily just "eating badly" but you can have a bad reaction to certain kinds of foods and not realize it). And sometimes anti-depressants might be worth it.

The "Clean your Room" meme is less about solving depression than about keeping youthful idealism grounded in an age of social media when any jackass can make their voice heard on twitter.
