What games do you guys show to children to get them interested in retro gaming?

>> No.4987026

I present Action 52 to them as though it were the greatest game in the world just to fuck with their heads.

>> No.4987038

Kirby and Sonic are decent entry points. The co-op multiplayer means you can "carry" them through the game as Kirby/Sonic while they play as the partner and get accustomed to playing.

I think I would let them play SM64 just to give them the feel of 90s gaming and a open world envoirment.

>> No.4987045

Super Mario World. My nephew is 7 and he loves it.

>> No.4987053

>>4987045
I remember when I first played world in 1998. (My first Nintendo game) I thought the entire game was just moving Mario around the overworld.

>> No.4987058

Shovel knight.

It's not retro but it's great for weaning kids off of the AAA fortnite mindset and getting them to start playing 2d platformers.

>> No.4987061

>>4987058
Come on. That’s like saying undertale.

>> No.4987064

Obviously Mario. I don't want the kid to activate any latent autism by showing them Sonic, even though the old ones were good.

Custer's Revenge

Yeah, my sister got me Sonic Forces for the switch..pure fucking furry worship

>> No.4987097

None. If they don't want to play games that are too old for them then it's no use trying to persuade them. It'd be like if your parents tried to get you into watching pre 1950s TV shows and movies when you had more interest in what was popular in the 80s and 90s during your own childhood. It's not impossible that kids from now might appreciate pre-2000 video games but it would probably rather deter them if you want to 'get them interested'.
I'd love to show my cousins how much I liked playing NES, Gameboy or DOS games but it's not like it's something that has to be passed on as some family tradition or something, it'd be nice if they kinda like them or enjoy them for what they are but that's honestly the most optimistic outlook I have on them in those regards.

Princess maker

>> No.4987179

sonic was too hard for them because they had fun but starting from the beginning was too much

>> No.4987187

Disney platformers. Castle of Illusion crushed it a couple years ago.

>> No.4987198

Conkers Bad Fur day always works because of its unique comedic style for an n64 era game. And its edgy, teenagers love edgy shit.

Dual Orb 2. Even the most hardcore modern gamer's heart melts when the monster trucks and sniper rifles first appear.

>Come on. That’s like saying undertale.

No. Shovel Knight is amazing, Undertale is a poor earthbound shmup clone.

>> No.4987297

I seriously doubt anybody here has kids.

nobody should be exposed to playing this gigantic pile of shit.

Don't think I've ever specifically tried to get a kid into my dumb hobby. When I babysit my nephew I just let him pick a game based on what cartridge he likes the look of. He likes Sonic 3

I'd choose an autistic sonicfan for a son over the the nu-male basedboys who lust after the switch anyday.

People keep saying this but I fail to see how it has anything in common with Earthbound.

I actually played S64 as a kid. I got to the part after the first set of rings and just flew aimlessly around the world and punched the bad guys now and then. Wasn't so bad.

Mario 2 (Overseas version), my 5 y/o cousin liked it so much he wanted more games like that and can now beat Megaman 2 in around an hour and a half

Seconding this. Played at a friend's house when I was like 6 and it felt like entering a nightmare world of boredom.

I disagree, I think focusing on accessible points of entry that will make kids interested in the mechanics and aesthetics of older games is key here.

Toby Fox made an Earthbound hack back in the day, that's probably where the comparison came from Also it sharing a similar overworld style

Kids these days would never appreciate the subtleties of Aries the Cheetahman dual-wield clubbing midget Saddam Hussein to death in one hit.

>> No.4988018

Modern shit. In the early days of the retro fad there was no surer way to get a kid to appreciate SSB than to start them off on brawl. Same goes for many others.

Except that Shovel Knight is legit good.

>> No.4988049

I used to watch nick at nite with my parents all the time
like you said, the key is to not pry them away from their own entertainment. let them play when they're bored or let them join you when you're playing

>> No.4988057

>>4987053
I bet you also didn't know you had to go into Peach's castle in Mario 64.

>> No.4988073

Wario Land because you can't die, Kirby for similar reasons. Mostly though I just let kids play what they want. I got into Atari 2600 games because my uncle had one at his house, but I played them of my own volition. I would have felt awkward if he tried to show them off to me.

>> No.4988235

>>4986950
You don't. Those that deserve to get into retro gaming must find it on their own. We don't need retards in the hobby just because some guy showed them yoshi's island.

>> No.4989167

I started with SMB and Ghouls and Ghosts... She has to as well. Fuck 'er, if she wants dad proud she better rescue Goddamn Princess Prin-prin or whatever the fuck her name was.

As a kid, my mother bought me shovelware for the PS1. This included shit for kids, most notably, Stuart Little 2, because it was the least shit. We also had an NES with Mario Bros 3, and some others. Being on this board, you could tell which console I gravitated most towards.

Co-op games work really well. Also this.
