Just finished this bad boy which was long overdue, really enjoyed it, so what JRPG would you recommend I play next? Preferably with similar quality story, characters and combat.

This if you haven't already. PS IV is probably the best 16 bit jrpg there was.

You may also enjoy Lunar.

Mentioning combat is limiting my list t b h. What did you like about CT's combat? Most retro JRPGs are very basic turn-based JRPGs, with only a few having some interesting mechanics behind it. Even CT only added combos into the mix.

If you like the combos I'd suggest Valkyrie Profile. The only problem is that VP's true ending requires following a guide occasionally (not religiously).

Far better games but not the same as Trigger at all.

There are good JRPGs out there but there's nothing else like Chrono Trigger. Chrono Cross is terrible but check out FF6, Panzer Saga, Mother 3, Phantasy Star IV etc.

SaGa Frontier. It has kickass skill combo mechanics. No time travel, but you do see a lot of different cultures and levels of technology in its crazy world.

In my opinion, the closest area FF5-6.

Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star IV are the two best JRPGs made, and they manage to include everything that made the genre worth caring about without wallowing in the excesses.

missing lunar 2 eternal blue complete and the two tales games in ps1 section.

also missing grandia, thousand arms, and persona 2 in ps1 section.

there is also that one cutesy game where you play as a chick and has grid based combat? I think it also came out on DS but I can't think of the name of it.
