i'd say you want a really good dpad, so a snes controller, psx controller, any kind of dualshock, and remember you can get an 8bitdo, but i don't know if i'm spelling it right let alone if you can get it. or if it's any good. but it's pretty good in theory.

anyway, stay away from analog sticks for these games, and that includes 1-4. in case you don't already know, everything after X4 is...different, at best. at worse, they're fucking miserable. my opinion lies in the they're fucking miserable category.

i recommend playing a romhack of x3 where you can play as zero without any limitations. beat it as x, then redo it with the romhack. you'll be glad you did.

oh, another thing you might consider is remapping one of the shoulder buttons to your dash. you don't have to do this with an emulator. at least with x1-3 you can just go into the options and change your dash button to one of the shoulder buttons and vice versa. i suppose you could remap one of the shoulder buttons to charge also, but i just wanted to let you know that was an option.

I play it on keyboard, with shoot/jump/dash set to left arrow/down/right. I can’t imagine playing it any other way, it allows for managing all three actions simultaneously with your middle three fingers. For this reason I feel like a Genesis controller might actually be best, if I had to use one.

A = Dash
S = Jump
D = Attack
F = Whatever the remaining button does
X = Weapon <
C = Weapon >
E = Giga attack
Arrow keys = movement

Extremely comfy. It's so easy to dash jump constantly it's almost cheating.
