can we get a discussion going on AoE2?
I recently bought the HD edition with no previous experience with the game and I love it.

What are the best strategies for early game?

Assuming you're not playing a deathmatch or some post-imperial with resource spamming like a bitch.......

Your first step is to get a healthy population of villagers, it costs 40 wood to make a house and 50 food to make a villager.

Scout in a spiral around your town center with your starting scout cav,; you're looking for deer, fish that you can get from a river, berries, boar, and herdables, in that order. Hunt or fish if you can, gather berries if you can't. Do this until you can get 50 food reliably for every villager you're pumping out. When you've got about 15 villagers, hoard up to buy the advancement to the feudal age, and shift about a third of your guys to wood production, you'll want to set up a lumber camp near a forest once you've exhausted the the few trees scattered around your town center. Once you have that, it depends on what you've found and if you've made contact with any other players.

Unless you're the Celts, you gather food faster from hunting than from herd animals slaughtered. You'll waste a bit from rotting, but you want as much food in your stores in the first 4 minutes as you can possibly get together.

Honestly, I would recommend you play through the campaigns. The AI isn't a great challenge, but you'll get a feel for what a few of the different civilizations are like, and get a bit of a feel for your own playstyle.
