Emulate the patched Japanese PS1 version, since you don't have nostalgia for miserable piles of crap it's only fair that you experience the story with the most accurate script and the best acting.

The PSP port included with Dracula X Chronicles is the second best choice though, not only because the acting is less cringe or that you can switch to the Japanese voices, but because it is almost identical to the Japanese PS1 release (meaning the originally cut content like familiars are there) whilst including extras like a proper RoB Maria mode. Too bad you have to unlock it by playing the Rondo remake and the graphics aren't exactly as sharp as they would be on a PS1 emulator. Seriously though, I hope you already played Rondo.

You can make it look pretty much identical if you set the window to stretch in the in-game options, then set a high internal resolution in PPSSPP. This will prevent any interpolation artifacts. I pretty much counted the pixels and it was about the same as the PSX version.

I finally played the PSP version earlier this year and the ONLY difference between it and the Japanese PSX release is the Maria boss and playable Maria. It's so poorly done however. She has the same move set as in Rondo which is more lore friendly I guess, but she does so little damage that you will eventually just be running by most enemies and some bosses take a very, very long time to kill. Especially in the (OP don't read this) second castle area, it was like lmao did they even play test this.

Also her running animation doesn't loop perfectly which bothered me a lot.

To be frank, when you play as Richter or Maria (Saturn or PSP ver.) you quickly realize how shallow the experience is and how the game wasn't designed as a Classicvania/platformer at all.

I like it, it's like making your own fun with the environment you're given, and doing all kinds of backwards exploration. Plus Maria can get by REALLY fast and it feels nice.

PSX if you never played it before (or PSP if you want your voice acting and dialogue to be a little less corny), Saturn if you're replaying it imo. XBLA I believe is based on the original PSX version so if you don't have the right hardware for the other two or simply can't wrap your head around emulating them then perhaps this will serve you just as well.

The Saturn version is slightly visually inferior and suffers from a bit of slowdown when too much is going on on the screen. However, it features a superior fight with Maria, a superior playable version of Maria, two exclusive areas of the castle, and a cool new weapon that happens to be my favorite SOTN weapon. It's entirely in Japanese though so if you haven't played it before and either aren't fluent or don't know what to do to progress you can get stuck.

Play the PSX version and if the game really grabs you and you're tempted to play it again try the Saturn version. All the extra features are even unlocked from the start on Saturn so it's just perfect for replaying after doing the PSX version.

>> No.4966005

>>4965996
I mean, sure, I also wasted a lot of time zapping through with Maria, but it does feel shallow. There is no actual platforming in the game. It's designed to be played as Alucard and gain new abilities to explore new places in the castle.

You don't even notice stuff like this when you play the game on a saturn. The saturn version has the third hand (always keep potions and when I get the fairy I put power of sire there) some sweet new weapons and armour, 15 new enemies, 2 new areas, new music and 2 new bosses. plus, wakamoto norio Dracula is the best Dracula ever.

The second goblin familiar that the psx version cut is irrelevant, and the original psx english dub is legendary. Faggots who didn't grow up playing it in the 90s always shit on it.

Dont believe the trolls, the only thing the saturn version noticably sucks at are all the transparency effects.

Performance and visual flaws aside, Saturn has a lot of neat stuff added that you shouldn't miss out on, like 2 extra areas, new boss fights, Alucard having 3 hands, a (good) Maria mode, new items, and new remixes of classic CV tunes. Also the Saturn has a better controller for 2D games.

Not really anon, what are you feeling stupid about? You're doing pretty good (I can tell because you're using some of the Wolf's stuff like slope jumping to your advantage). Are you stuck? I can tell you're missing something, but by looking at the map you probably already got it? I dunno. Just keep exploring the unexplored portions of your map, that's basically how you go ahead. By unexplored I obviously mean the little gaps between the borders, which signals an entrance.

If you're having trouble, here's a little secret:

Go to the easternmost section of the map, where you fought that purple knight, there are medusas floating around, and under there is a telescope.
Get into the room that was blocked by the knight, break the wall to the left in case you haven't yet, and just sit there for a number of seconds, like the Castlevania 2 thing, you'll be able to access the room that you couldn't get in because you're not able to turn into mist yet.
There's a really good weapon there, while it may not seem that good and only work at a really close range, but it's really fast and packs quite a punch. I used to have it on all the time before finding the superdagger, and then before finding the other good swords. Remember that the Iron Shield is pretty good because it gives you a full second of i-frames when it blocks something.

Good luck, anon. And don't try to access the north-western section (the one blocked by spikes) without a certain piece of armor. Also Fairy a best familiar.

The sad thing is the Richter/Maria mode could have been half-way decent with just some minor tweaks. The first big one is the damage, all it takes is sometimes is as little as 2 or 3 good hits from a boss and Richter is dead. I get they were trying to mimic the old Castlevania experience where Simon had little health but in a game designed to where enemies WILL hit you it just doesn't work here. It actively encourages you to just use your item crash on very boss and wipe them out instantly negating the fun of being strategic with them. A better balancing of enemy damage could have made the mode way more fun.

Also there should have been a fetch system in place to force you to visit all the dungeons to beat the game, it's kind of pointless when you can start at the beginning and just need to run straight through to the center of the castle on the way to Shaft.

PSP has japanese voice acting with english subs, Maria boss fight and playable Maria (I wouldn't say it's "nerfed", it's just different from her Saturn version, on PSP she uses her Rondo moveset, in fact the dragon is OP as fuck, and she can das mid-air which is pretty cool). And it has the 2 missing familiars from the original Japanese version on PS1, which were removed from the western releases due to copyright, since they used some japanese celebrities voice actors. That includes a song called Nocturne that plays when you let the Fairy rest on Alucard's shoulder when he sits down. Also, PSP has a new ending theme called Mournful Serenade, composed by Michiru Yamane, to replace "I am the wind" (I like Serenade better). Sadly, they're just regurgitated from the English original, adding a whole new layer of localization that makes them even less accurate than the dub on PS1.
