I'm trying to understand your criteria.
You mean that the FF3 map is a legit "world map" because it's a zoomed out map of the overworld map in the game? Then, in that case, the SMW map would also count, it's a zoomed out map of the whole map in the game. Sub-maps aren't included in either.
Or you're using another criteria?

So I understand how crossing the north or south pole would make the back side of the world vertically flipped from your perspective. But I don't understand how going from east to west is supposed to change anything. If I travel west from New York, over the US, across the Pacific ocean, over Asia, across the Atlantic back to New York, I'd still arrive in New York facing the same direction as when I left, having traveled west the entire time.

Of course, all this could be explained as the game world only having the visible landmasses on its entire globe, with the back side of the globe just being one giant ocean and the game just skips the travel time because there's nothing to see on that side of the world.

But isn't it all about perspectives here? Technically doing a sphere in Chrono Trigger at that point in time with the technology wouldn't have been possible at all. The purpose is simply for giving the illusion that you are on a planet for the player. Most people that would have played CT at the time were obviously going to be children that wouldn't know much better. You aren't seeing that ship fly from a first person perspective in that game. The purpose is just to give the illusion anyways because you are controlling characters in a video game. Which doesn't have to be accurate to real life (nor should it ever be).

It's just interesting to come to the inescapable conclusion that you live on a torus in every jrpg ever built, especially when it is presented as a sphere.

For instance, CT shows the planet when "The future refused to change" as a sphere, FF7 does the same when Meteor is seen in space, Terranigma has you resurrecting literally Earth as we know it, even Secret of Mana has a little used world map subscreen when riding Flammie that computes a spherical projection of the map somehow (probably a fisheye-like transform).

Since a sphere and a torus look like a plane when you zoom in close enough, most people don't pick up on it.

>>4965826
what you say is more or less true, but there is more subtlety in properly representing the sphere then just flipping the map when you pass the poles; otherwise you just have a torus again with the world map painted twice on donut this time.
