This looks like Doom 2 remastered or something, however as long as I know Bethesda never did remaster to any classic Doom games. Was I scammed? Gib chunks and body parts don't, but there's usually less of those on average.

Speaking of which, does anyone know how to make one of those neat menus that let you toggle shit in a mod? Like say I make an actor that replaces the normal tree and randomly spawns a few different ones, but some old mapsets may conflict with this and you get incorrect results, so the mod might partially break a feature/design, so there's an option in a sub menu somewhere to let you turn off this actor.

You raise a good point. This was brought up on the Sonic Adventure episode of Retronauts but making resources for 3D games is time-consuming and expensive unless you make it low poly which is why SA reused so many levels and the gameplay was nothing like the original Sonic games. Unfortunately that sort of abstract low-poly 3D aesthetic alienates most gamers so it's out of the question for devs.

The problem is that Doom 2016 had no real direction or solid mindset of where to go until the last year or two of development, a bunch of new people trying to aimlessly flail at old and new ideas until they finally managed something. The idea the level designers went with was "what if we design every major demon encounter as a multiplayer arena, where both players and demons can get everywhere?" The result were the mishmashed and awkward levels of the final product.

The Hideous Destructor page lists some maps that work well for it.
On a barely related note, I've been considering learning some basic mapping stuff and trying to make edits to standard doom 1/2 maps to make them more Hideous Destructor 'friendly', but I'm not sure I'm up to doing so. All I'd really change is removing invisible walls in areas where, realistically, you'd be able to climb through. (I mean, breaking maps is kind of a feature of HD considering the ability to blow holes in things with explosives) Another thing would be changing some flat textures that you can shoot through (think the first room of E1M3, with the bars) to being actual level geometry instead of flat textures. So you can still shoot, get shot, and be spotted through them, but it isn't nearly as unfair since parts of them can actually block bullets instead of acting like a vision-only barrier that enemies can see through. Maybe also some minor decorating and 'theming', but that might be going too far.

If you're having problems with mods making maps too hard or outright impossible then never play any monster or gameplay mods. They're usually designed for vanilla Doom 2 played in one go.
Weapon mods are more flexible with Plutonia and "modern" wads since they're never weaker than vanilla weapons. Infinite-ammo pistols exist so you're never ammo starved.

But if your problem is that weapon mods make maps too easy then you can always challenge one of those slaughtermap packs designed for pillowblaster-tier weaponry.
That said, I don't replay wads on gzdoom for the challenge. Hell, playing them on gzdoom in the first place lowers the difficulty thanks to freelook and better hit detection. I do it because they're fun maps and I want to test my new shiny weapons on them.

Lost Souls also seem to gravitate around an Elemental instead of swarming you the second they're fired out, though that'll probably change once they go down. I see you all enjoyed the QuakeCon news.
About a week ago I posted my work in progress map for the Infernew project on the Doomworld forums, and I got some good feedback, so thanks to those of you who played it. Bonus thanks to the guy who went to the trouble of recording a demo.
I've worked on it some more and I would seek out more feedback if you're willing. Here are all the changes I remember right now:
* replaced the tight narrow corridor maze section with a dark cavernous "maze" section, with more encounters
* added more suits to the blood maze
* more imps in the courtyard
* swapped out the long flight of stairs for a teleporter
* maybe prevented the spectres in the red switch room from using the teleporter
* forced the player to go back into the blood maze via the teleporter, by putting up a wall to stop them from going to the bridge/lava area
* maybe made the blood maze secret a little more obvious

Today's efforts have been towards balancing health and ammo. Specifically, if you went off without finding the first secret. It gets pretty tight but I think that's how it should be if you're not finding secrets.
So, if you have a spare minute or ten, please let me know what you think. This map is designed for chocolate doom/prboom, UV and Doom 2.

I don't think so. OG Doomguy was just this space marine who was at the wrong place at the wrong time, then performed exceptionally. Everything about him makes him seem human, just one who had excellent skill and determination.

Meanwhile, Doomslayer seems like some kind of ancient half-deity almost, perhaps older than human civilization.
Like he could be some lost culture's own Hercules or Gilgamesh, and/or a divine superhuman, perhaps appointed by god as his champion against hell.

The technology also differs a lot between the two settings. In the original games, machinery and technology almost comes off as crude (many of the guns look like conventional contemporary guns, or vaguely based on something like that), classic Doom has a rather retrofuturistic aesthetic, while in Doom 4 and Doom 5, the technology is VERY advanced and refined, with lots of complex shapes and machinery.
There's also just how the old games are put together almost like an old budget horror movie, lots of random stuff used and modified and digitized to be used in the game, the monsters being a mix of the hand drawn, 'claymation', and even latex puppets, all done by just a couple of dudes. Doom 4 and Doom 5 meanwhile are extremely modern and are produced with a very high budget by a huge team.
Both are the apex of videogame technology from their time, but both in very different ways.

Doom 1 goes into Doom II. After the events of Doom II, Doom 64 takes place. After Doom 64, when the marine decides to remain in hell, some off-screen stuff happens, he presumably finds Argent D'Nur, pals around with the medieval humans for a while and all that stuff, and eventually he's somehow subdued and entombed in Hell, to prevent him from destroying it. By this point, the demons call him the Doomslayer, and to them, he IS a legendary figure. Then Doom 2016 happens, and now we're in Doom Eternal. I have no idea where Doom 3 fits into the timeline because I've never played it, though I would assume it takes place at least before Doom 2016, because in 2016, when you fire a rocket at the corpse of the Icon of Sin, a Soul Cube pops out and gives you a figurine.

That's up to debate, after Doom 2, Final Doom also takes place.
I choose to think of Final Doom as one of the possible outcomes after Doom 2, just like Doom 64 is another possible outcome.

A painful fever dream. IdTech 7 is too much of a nightmare to hope to mod for easily without some real super hardware, just like how basically no one but one guy modded RAGE. The only hope? The devs make it easy to create and insert content into the game without having to jump through 50 hoops and a supercomputer's processing.

Well, Doom modding was pretty limited in its early years.
Map making software varied and wasn't even remotely close to how practical Doombuilder ever was, and you had to pay money for them.
And it wasn't until Boom and ZDoom where you could really start stretching Doom really far, raising limits and letting you use a lot more sector effects and linedef actions.
It's not even getting into how some people didn't have strong enough computers, Doom was advertised to run on a 386 computer, and it would, but you really needed a 486 for good performance.
Then later you had Final Doom, which would certainly not run smoothly on some computers.

It was open, but it wasn't until Carmack released the source code where stuff began getting really creative and wild.
iD Software of today probably wouldn't release the source code, Carmack has moved on, and the world is different, but I could see them releasing a modding tool of some sort. Sure, it requires a lot of power NOW, but give maybe four years (and assume that Doom 5 has enduring popularity, which it very well may), I could see at least some modding taking root and sprouting up, even if not as large as classic modding.
