Pretty good, way different vibe that the PC or other ports. Being more in the style of DOOM 64. If you want to go through the game in a different way I recommend it.

It was the first console port of Doom to run at a good FPS and just be competent in general. And it changes the atmosphere quite a bit with darker & colored lighting and a new dark ambient score, which gives it playability even if you've already played regular Doom.

It's really great, the only really unfortunate thing is that the PSX-exclusive levels are absolute ass. This kind of makes regular playthroughs a pain in ass, since you're in the middle of having a blast, and then you run into some horrible slog of a level designed by morons.

The general Doom gameplay comes through cleanly, however the feeling of speed and momentum of the original just isn't there. It's not bad at all, but it detracts from what would have otherwise been a far superior port. It feels somewhat similar to how the movement differs between the GBA ports of Doom and Doom 2. It's just clear that the PSX port (and the GBA port of Doom 2) are not really running in the Doom engine.

I also like the original Doom soundtrack and sound effects far better than the remixed PSX versions. I don't count this against the port, though. If anything, it gets points just for uniqueness. It's not as if there aren't other, more traditional ways to play Doom, which means that each port has its own charm.

That said, it's still definitely worth it. The remix version is pretty fun, too, where Doom 2 monsters are mixed into the Doom 1 levels.

It's the best console port there is, unless you want to argue that Doom 64 is the better console port, but Doom 64 is less of a port than it is a completely different game that happens to have doom-like weapons and monsters.

There's a gzdoom backport of it that'll let you play it on PC, which is probably the best way to play it today.

The PSX version is running on (a somewhat modified version of) the Doom engine. The GBA is not.

The GBA is a direct port of Jaguar Doom, which is the actual Doom engine ported. The PSX version uses the Jaguar layout, but is not actually running the Juguar version or the Doom engine.
