4959950 No.4959950 [Reply] [Original]

I just got this PlayStation one at a pawn shop a couple of days ago, and it worked fine, but I'm waiting for a modchip in the mail. I took it apart to make sure there wasn't one already installed and when I reassembled it the optical drive does not spin at all. The ribbon cable for the optical drive is not damaged and the other cable was not unplugged at all. I believe what happened is in the act of pulling out the ribbon cable the optical drive connection to the board came loose and needs to be resoldered. Easy fix or get a new one?

The lid close switch is definitely working, right?

>> No.4959954

>>4959953
Yeah, it sticks sometimes but the lid does close all the way I'm fairly certain.

>>4959954
Yeah, but the switch itself?

Have you tried holding it down with the upper casing off, like in your pic?

Thanks anon, that seems to have fixed it. It is missing a couple of screws so when reassembled it probably wasn't as secure as it could've been and the lid close was acting up.

That's a little embarrassing

Ah well, the simplest solutions are often the correct ones.

Good luck with your modchip install.

Put a playing card between the shielding and the lid sensor and screw it down tight then just power off before changing games if the case is broken.

do you even retrorepair?

Got the modchip installed but then I was testing it because it wasn't reading any Cd roms and I got a screen that flickered and now the av is not working. Is the PlayStation rip? Desoldered the modchip to make sure and it isn't working still.

Now I turned it on and got a grey flicker and nothing on the screen. Rip psx

Actually I decided to be a nigger and exchange it at the pawn shop for a working one, what I think happened was that I was getting impatient after like 2 hours of testing it and set the motherboard on its side in the casing and it touched the metal shield in a way that shorted the motherboard and broke the av out.

Yeah this one has trouble booting games unless I stand it on its side. I suppose that's karma for me.

Maybe, or more likely it's because you didn't properly research the system before settling on a particular hardware revision.

I didn't have a choice at that pawn shop, they had 2 other playstations and one of them was powering off when moved and the last one that worked was the one I got.

Get a refund and buy a 5xxx or 7xxx one. They're far more reliable and have better image quality. Avoid 9xxx ones if you're intending to use a Gameshark/Action Replay type device as they lack the parallel port.

Since you're comfortable opening shit up, pop that thing open, clean and lubricate it. Blast any dust out, clean the lens with alcohol or glass cleaner, and use silicone lubricant on a cotton swap to lubricate the slides of the optical drive. It should take 5 minutes and works like a charm.

I think OP left because that’s clearly not a 1001. The OP pic is a 5501-7501 judging by the laser placement and ribbon cable. 1001 has a short ribbon cable, totally different placement and design as they models...

You can swap in the better quality laser with metal parts from a PsOne (slim) but you'll still be stuck with it being too close to the hot psu, unreliable manual gain control and texture banding.
