The custom endscreens in Guncaster come across as a bit cheesy. But it's a cool idea and nice attention to detail though, surprised more 'character' mods don't do that.

why do people hate slaughter? I find it brings an interesting dynamic. Consistently moving head on a swivel, find a route and go. When your route gets blocked find a back up plan.

offtopic but who's to say? Doomguy can manage himself perfectly fine in both scenarios, as it has been proven several times before already. he's no less of a badass just because the hell forces happen to take different approaches to their encounters.

It's mostly when a wad abruptly shifts from one style of map to another that people don't like it.

I personally find that the slaughtermaps you get towards the end of some megawards tend to be pretty piss poor lazy efforts at mapping in general, let alone at slaughtermaps than the ones you get where it's been the intention from the start.

I kind of dislike it because I'm kind of just vaguely passable at it if I have plenty of ammo and room to move. I can find it to be tedious busywork, or annoying.

Also, I think it's something that comes down to quality, some people plop down a pile of Barons, which is just going to be fucking tedious.
There's probably low quality slaughter, and high quality slaughter, likewise there's easy slaughter and difficult slaughter.

Thus, if a .wad which showed no indication of it, starts just building a lot of slaughter all of a sudden, I find that rather disappointing, especially if I liked it up to that point.
You either like slaughter or you don't, I guess, it's a matter of tastes.

I'm playing Swift Death, a megaWAD full of short but intense level. Playing with Trailblazer made it too easy but I'm enjoying it. I'd recommend vanilla Doom or another kind of weapon mod.

First off, it's completely normal for there to be a few strategies that are ideal for an individual enemy. What, do you expect every weapon on tactic to be viable on every enemy? Second, no, you don't just repeat the same strategy on enemies every time, because the situations you're faced with are different. You may not have enough ammo, you may be rushed for time, etc etc. I wouldn't normally use a rocket launcher on cultists but if I have it out and there's a crowd of them endangering me, I'll blast em. And there are a million other examples where circumstances (ie level design) shake things up.

Fucking hell, what a mess. It's hard to get a great look at, because it's really just a pile of gore and pinkies on the screen, but when the pinky gibs, he won't just throw his arms, legs and heads in every direction (along with lots of blood and viscera), he'll also leave a pile of carnage as a 'body'.

Also Perdition's Gate is *kinda* picking up a bit, it's not as dreary and dull as the first couple of levels, but it still feels like it lacks something.

Wouldn't really be that hard to do I think.
An easier route would be to just make the shellbox a sequential pickup that gives you one shell per tic (each stage of it) as you touch it, until the box is empty or your inventory is full.

There's a similar thing in Immoral Conduct, only it does it two at a time (so if your inventory only can take one more shell, you'll still pick two when you touch it, meaning you can potentially waste a shell, thus you still have to consider and be strategic about the pickup).
I wonder if I should change that? Or leave it as is?

Look at some elements of some maps you like, and see how you can adapt a similar idea without outright ripping it off. Homages are fine for noob mappers, especially if you put a spin on it.

Also, the Evolution Of The Wad series kind of gives you some ideas on mapping theory for Doom, tells you about a couple of pitfalls, and some things to consider and to reflect on. It's also kinda entertaining, at that. At least if you really like Doom.
The episodes are sometimes kinda long though, so schedule time on like a Saturday or Sunday when you aren't really doing much, it'll pass a lazy afternoon.

I don't know anything about mappan but I would begin by taking a look at what are considered the best maps ever made, then compare them to what are considered weak maps, figure out what the major differences about them are, then make sure to avoid making those mistakes. I would also study the individual and group strengths and weaknesses of monsters, and place them as intuitively as possible.

A few passages from The Art of War come to mind

"By holding out advantages to him, he can cause the enemy to approach of his own accord,; or by inflicting damage, he can make it impossible to draw near."

"If the enemy is taking his ease, he can harass him; if well supplied with food, he can starve him out; if quietly encamped, he can force him to move."

In other words, you should consider the player your enemy and make your map with the intention of killing him. If there's a place the player wants to go, make it dangerous for him; if there were a large number of pickups in the area previous, force him to use more ammunition or take more damage; if there's a safe zone, make it dangerous after some time. But be fair about it, make sure they have the tools necessary to progress, but never just outright give it to them.

It doesn't help that lazy fucks slap a pile of slaughter maps at the end of what start out as good WADs. Most wouldn't care if regular and slaughter WADs stuck to their own side, but "surprise slaughter" has left a sour taste in the mouths of many.

As for slaughter itself, it is a chore, a tedious, fatiguing grind with little ebb and flow. If designed poorly, it can also feel like a cheap, unfair "challenge" that easily overwhelms many players and eventually leaves them dissatisfied with the repetition of their many deaths.

Doom franchise on sale on Steam. Should i buy Doom or Ultimate Doom? The latter seem to be the more obvious choice because it adds a new episode. Having trouble animating with GLSL. I'm trying to blend between two textures in a 4x1 texture sheet. When I do a simple, uniform blend, everything looks fine. But when I try something complex and use the texture's brightness or its X position to adjust the animation offset, I get ugly single color bands at the transition point between the two textures. Anyone know what could be causing it?

Yes. I have no idea what that blue/metallic grey shit is supposed to be, if it's like rocks, crystals, or some kind of construct, the area mostly comes off as looking kind of cave-like.

It's interesting because until then, the environments have been extremely boring and samey, so the level actually gives some surprises for once.
Here's another one, the level has a series of gates which teleport to I guess different worlds or dimensions. I think this is supposed to be some kind of hell planet.

It's also Map 15, so the secret exit is there.

Actually on the subject of quake 3 arena, my installation crashes once I load up any map at all. Without bots it seems to last a little bit longer, but it crashes within a minute, though I can move around for a couple of seconds and maybe grab some items.

Anybody want to help? I'm running Windows 10 (yeah yeah), tried using Windows 7 compatibility mode and Windows XP compatibility mode, both service pack 2 and 3, along with disabling fullscreen optimization.

Don't think 256 colors will make a difference.

It may be a resolution problem, I feel like lower resolutions are less likely to crash, but it's not 100% and could just be random.

First thing you see starting Map 31, is a scrolling wall with menacing faces on it. I guess this is the living rock? They look kind of evil-ish or demonic though.

You drop down from there into a small arena (you basically land with your ass on a Berserk pack, making you bring up your first, just as two shotgunners train their sights at you, which wasn't so fun. Hard to dodge.
There's four "tubes" with each player start to drop down from, a different evil face in each.

So now the level gets fucking weird, where the 'living rock' stuff fades off into a bright white, and you can't really orient yourself properly a lot without looking at the map.

I'm not sure if this symbolizes some kind of portal transition or something. I've seen some unusual mapping before, but nothing quite like this.

Goddammit, fucking connection ate my post.

So I would have taken more screenshots, but there's actually not much to look at visually. A lot of it is just the bright white.
The exception is the key room (decorated with classic gray and green marble), where a cyberdemon pokes up from the floor when you grab the key, and you're supposed to jump down into the toxic sludge, pick up a radsuit and go for a teleporter.
It has sort of a deep water effect going, which kind of works here.

Speaking of the teleporters, this is where the level is pretty unusual, until now, teleporters has mostly been just generic pentagram pads, but in this level, you instead have just a line, which is flanked by a pair of lamp posts, where you walk between them and that's the teleporter. Nothing is done to telegraph this, and you're kind of stuck wandering the first arena wondering where to fucking go, until you stumble between them.
So you maybe kind of figure this out by then, but you're probably getting the idea by the key room.

The progression of this level is just really weird, nothing is clear at all, and some of the environments are disorienting and just odd to navigate. Speaking of which, I actually ended up cheating to get to the next secret level, while the regular exit is kind of an anticlimactic pad which tricks you into thinking you're picking up a Megasphere (in a large room with the white texture, except it's all pitchblack and full of pinkies), the secret exit is hidden in a small room outside the rest of the map, and there's no obvious way to get there, I looked everywhere for secret doors, teleporters, switches, etc.
I maybe wouldn't otherwise, but if this secret level is this weird and unorthodox, surely the second one is even crazier, right? I had to see that.

The next secret level is actually not very exciting or weird at all. You kind of start in the weird end room of the first one, and then move out to a balcony overlooking a toxic ocean, with teleporter lamps.

So what you get here isn't an interesting dungeon or some prolonged clusterfuck, you get like 8 or so identical rooms which you teleport back and forth to, with nothing really interesting going on visually or conceptually.
The final area us a really generic looking toxic waste room flanked with broken deep water effects (which might be GZDoom's fault, but it all just looks broken), and it all just kind of peters out with a really plain puzzle and a bland fight.

I actually forgot to take screenshots of this level, because it underwhelmed me and I never got the instinct of "Oh, this is neat, I need to take a picture!", there really isn't anything cool or interesting here.

And then level 16 is a generic level like the ordinary ones.

Except your gun is in the bottom center of your view when wielding it, assuming you're in the action.
Maybe you aren't looking down the sights every moment (some do, some don't), but it'd be ready to be brought to bear in an instant.
You 'cant' your body sideways, with the stock against your shoulder, and then looking down the sights of the gun, then you move forwards in such a 'sideways' manner, the side of your body in the front.
Notice how this man is aiming and shooting his rifle in one direction, but his torso is facing another.

Doomguy is pretty pro, and you can see on his HUD portrait that he's always threat assessing, scanning left and right, so he'd totally keep the stock of his shotgun or plasma rifle against his shoulder at all times, always ready to put down fire where he needs to.

Hell it's not even limited to Zandronum either. AEOD was popular during its heyday time and it was zdoom/gzdoom only before a recent Zan update afaik. To the point that people called it overrated before it got the worst mod of the year award. Or how about /doom/'s favourite mod, Brutal Doom? Probably the most famous doom mod ever? That's not exclusive to Zandronum either. Mods that aren't as hated but aren't exactly seen in a positive light around here like Russian Overkill are also known, especially when popular streamers played it.
I guess /doom/ aren't doom fans considering they vast majority of posts, including screenshots of those same people playing, are about , in fact the second post is an update tracker which is 99% mod news. Sound logic there my friend.

I should probably make a state and graphic for each monster for when they're crushed.
Shouldn't be too hard, just recolor a blood pool and edit in what looks like skin from the monster in question, then it spays some blood and gibs.

Might be a bit of a bother with the larger ones though, the Cyberdemon I guess can get squished hooves, or, maybe his crush state doesn't change anything at all because really, I don't think a crusher could make him much shorter after he's exploded.
The spidermind leaves an absolutely gigantic corpse, along with lots of scrap metal, so I'm not sure what I'd do with that. Maybe it gets a half as large pool with some brains material and it spews some of that Duke 3D shrapnel graphic.

Mancubodes are very fat, so honestly, if you put one in a big press, it might just squish a lot of gross and bloodied yellow fat all over the place, but that sounds bothersome to replicate, and also very disgusting.
Cacos would probably compress easily.

I'm also kind of disappointed that Perdition's Gate goes back to the boring ruins and techbase aesthetic it's been using, the hell/alien stuff looked kind of promising. Hope that comes back soon.
Also the music on Map20 is totally TNT Map2's with an added music track to it, that's a bit funny to me.

Most levels are pretty brief though, which I appreciate, monster count seldom goes beyond 100, if it ever gets that high, many maps balance between 40 to 70 or so, and aren't too large.
It's also finally being harsher than the first weak levels.

Realizing also that maybe outright crushed bodies should just *stop* and then spawn a crushed graphic actor, both maybe as a small mercy for archie shenanigans, but more so that if there's a monster stuck in a crusher, and say an archie finds it (or there's an archie strategically hidden in a wall to keep raising him, depending on map design), they don't ever go through a long fucking routine of the dead monster being turned into jam, and the archie repeatedly raising it to redo the entire process (though that would be really funny), that would bog the game down with lots and lots of gib and blood actors, not good for performance.

Are you playing on the "TRUE Clusterfuck" difficulty or something? That one specifically has massively increased chance of spawning Legendaries.
On normal difficulties (including UV) you'll usually only get like 1-3 Legs per a hundred monsters. Besides, it's a randomizer. Just make a separate save at the end of a level, before you go to the next one and if the next level have some bullshit like a Leg in the first room, you can just load that save and basically reroll the next level.

It's a wad. You just run it like any other. I have it in my autoload, so I don't even think about it.

I just like it this way because I like keeping the autosave instead of quicksaving at the start of the level when I want to leave, and it's just so automatic for me to press 1 when a map starts that it doesn't add any more time - hit the exit switch, start up the next map, press 1 while the screen is melting, done. Easy peasy.

If Perdition's Gate wasn't already hurt by it's weak first cour, then the fact that this part of the game made up the free demo, probably contributed to a lack of interest. I mean you really don't get to see any of the actually interesting levels.
It's only first in Map 13 and then Map 15 where you get to see anything that's interesting, and it's around this time it starts to actually try to challenge you.

I looked at this for a while, sitting in my folder, having all these pictures in my head of what it would be like, a fabled lost episode of Final Doom, the one that didn't make it in time, and which for a long period of time was hard to find. What wonders lied within?

Actually, it's weird that there wasn't a "Final Doom 2" with Perdition's Gate and Hell to Pay in it.
It would make sense. Final Doom was well received after all, and PG was originally intended to be included in it.

I had to reduce his HP from 666666 to 6666
though most of his attacks deals from 1 or 2 damage, the spam itself is a motherfucker, also the melee slows you. the guy managed to script him perfectly as his D2 Boss fight, but the delay between all attacks is almost zero.

ok that its a demo wad to show him, but its perfect.

now if someone could shoehorn him into samsara or do a Wad with him as a Boss
