I'm a bit late to the party but I just got a Dreamcast. This might be the worst controller I've personally used, definitely the worst first party controller post gen-2. I'm surprised how much the n64 controller gets flack when this thing exists, especially when they should have known better by 6th gen

Are there any decent alternatives?

>> No.4959140

Exact same thing happened with me man.
Just use it some more. Break into it. You will adapt.
No good alternatives I can think of.

>> No.4959193

It's fine unless you have little girl hands. I guess it's not as ergonomic as the modern controller style but really who cares, you had to be a man to hold this controller. fwiw - there are those who argue (trollingly if you ask me) that dreamcast is actually 5th or 5.5 gen as a final insult to sega.

>> No.4959223

>>4959193
I have normal sized hands I think? My biggest issue is that the shoulder buttons are so low. If I grip it like I would any other controller with shoulder buttons, then my thumb barely reaches the analog stick. So if I want my thumb to sit center on the stick, I have to grip slightly higher on the controller which means I have to curl my index fingers inward on the shoulder buttons and it feels awkward as all heck

Then on top of that the d-pad is a monstrosity, there's no fucking 2nd stick for 3D games (which the library is mostly arcade ports so it's not the biggest deal), and the cord location is sheer retardation

I seriously don't know where this sort of retard comes from. I said that the dreamcast controller is fine if you do NOT have little girl hands.

The dreamcast controller was developed for mostly adult-sized hands, especially if hands are developed by 15. My hands aren't especially large by any stretch. Anyway you appear to have some kind of mental issues, pathetic and sad loser.

It's not too horrible. We managed with it back in the day. It's really heavy though.

But yeah no 2nd stick and bumpers in 6th gen? Sure that's pretty dumb. One of the reasons the DC failed is that there was no way to do proper camera controls.

>> No.4959935

If you play tony hawk correctly the triggers will give your fingers horrible blisters. I ended up sanding and smoothing the sharp edges from them.

Also, how do you go from the best D-pad in the industry to shit in one generation? Seriously, is there something I'm missing here?

Single analog was a mistake also. Dual analog was already basically industry standard at this point, if anything else, it would have made dev's work easier.

I love the DC to death, but the controller was a mistake, the only thing it had going for it was the VMU, but even that had issues like terrible battery life.

You just gotta got gud. I had a Dreamcast near launch and found it extremely comfortable and easy to use. Even the chord on the bottom I didn't mind at all.

If you can't adapt to different controllers the it'll be impossible for you to enjoy a lot of games. It was only during 6th and 7th gen that Sony and Microsoft set the "standard" for what a generic controller should be like.

This. The Dreamcast controller's design is truly baffling. Sega had one of the best d-pads ever and just ditched it along with removing two face buttons for a console with a ton of great fighting games. Anyway, you should just invest in the official arcade stick, OP. The standard controller works well enough for most games other than fighters.

Off-topic, but I feel it doesn't really deserve a thread: I just picked up a Dreamcast with the intention of burning my games. I made sure to get a model 1 version, so I'm covered on the hardware, but I've read that old rips can brick your system. Games "Bricking" a console isn't a thing. There's a good chance it will put more wear on the laser assembly and cause it to fail faster, though.

Games that came on a GD-ROM do have rips that have files cut out that comprise the game in some way. The most common method is to lower the quality of the audio files. Look for iso's that were ripped by the group ReviveDC. They tend to be best in most cases.

I'd be really careful with buying and plugging in and out old peripherals for dreamcast because there is a capacitor/resistor on the main board that is absolutely notorious for blowing. The fix isn't that hard (hell you can use cellotape and simply connect ends with a piece of metal if you want), but it's enough to wreck your evening. If you ask me don't bother, especially not for something as pointless as the keyboard and mouse.

This is /vr/. You shouldn't bank your bullshit on people *not* having used old peripherals.

I have used the controller and it's absolute garbage. It is okay to hold, sure, but the placement of the action buttons is abysmal. It's stupidly awkward to pull off anything that requires a press while another button is being pushed down (I still remember how fucking awful it was to play Rayman this way). It's not the worst thing to ever exist, but it's far from anything that could be considered "comfy".

You haven't heard of the playstation, which dominated the industry and had tons of dev studios interested in making games for it since it was easy to develop for? You mean that 6 months before the ps2 came out, no one played with dual analog sticks? C'mon kid, you need to at least research the time period for your larping. PC controllers had this too. Anyone with any modicum of an eye to the future would realize that dual analog and it's standardized camera controls were the future.

>> No.4972216

>>4972129
I'm older than you. Dreamcast launched in Japan nearly 18 months before the PS2. The DualShock had been out for less than a year at that point. Ape Escape, the first game to require the DualShock, didn't launch until halfway through 1999. You absolutely cannot claim that dual analog controls were anything close to the industry standard while the Dreamcast was in development. You could've figured this out with under five minutes of Googling and two brain cells to rub together, but apparently you don't meet one of those parameters.

>> No.4972239

>>4964940
You're a bit late to the party. Nowadays all you can find online are the true GDROM dumps that can only be played on an emulator.

Back then we used hacked rips that could fit on a CD-R and had special hacks to bypass the copy protection. Don't think you can find those anywhere now.

>> No.4972291

I use burned games on my 'cast all the time and it still functions.

Also the controller is cozy for some games, but not for others. I find that it gets uncomfortable when you use a game that utilises the triggers a lot

>>4968453
Allegedly the laser failure rate on the Dreamcast is somewhat low, but it's never been compared to burned games vs official games
