Metroid is really just a glorified ZX Spectrum game

>> No.4957461

And Spectrum games are just unglorified Metroids.

>> No.4957495

The ZX Spectrum was really just a Zelda clone when you think about it.

This genre should be called Willyvania. I like how it was stolen from us.

we're in for an EPIC thread

It can't be, it has too much content, the difficulty's too reasonable and the enemies are placed with care and not just randomly respawned.

All the same, NES games very often do have issues with bullshit enemy spawns due to memory limitations (only 2k of work RAM).

>> No.4957614

Metroid is also 128k in size. Most Spectrum games were only single load and fit entirely within the computer's 48k of memory because multiload cassette games were more headache than most people wanted to deal with.

>> No.4957658

I guess in theory a Metroid port on the Spectrum would be possible, although a Spectrum 128 would make the job a lot easier.

Well Metroid sure didn't really invent anything and I reee too when retards pretend that there wasn't anything like it before but I would rather play Metroid than most home computer videoadventures.

VVVVVV is more like a C64 game, because it has good music. There's at least one C64 demake of it.

This screams out to me "shitty Euro-trash design." Like an apotheosis of ugliness and pointless maze filler.

It's like it's made to appeal to a grand total of 38 British 9-year-olds who have no better games to play on their holiday.

Doesn't look much different from Dragon Slayer IV desu. That kind of design was also a thing in Japanese computer games.

Jet Set Willy doesn't unlock new areas as you progress though, all is open from the start, kinda like modern open-world sandboxes.
If anything, Xanadu, Montezuma's Revenge and Brain Breaker are closer to the genre we now conceptualize as 'metroidvania', because you gradually access new areas as you progress.

I've been looking for an hypothetical "zoomed-out" game like this for a long time, and by that I mean one where you can see beyond the room you're in, the only example I know of being Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. By the nature of this concept, I would imagine they would look retro but be modern because of the resolution required.

Anyone know games like this?
