I was watching GCCX with a Japanese friend of mine at one point (it was the Southernmost Travelogue episode) and he said that it's actually normal for game center employees to make the prizes in the UFO Catchers easier to win after you've tried a bunch of times if you ask them to. He said they don't make it quite as effortless as the employees do for Arino, but it's a common practice.

Because it's not. It's meant to be a pun on Famicom and Final, since the segment is Famionaire, a play on Famicom and Millionaire. They say ファミナルアンサー, so it's faminal answer. "Final answer" transliterated into the Japanese syllabary would be ファイナルアンサー.

Super Potato (The one in Akihabara, I think) usually loans the game to them if it's particularly expensive. I know they did that for Wild Guns, and I'm pretty sure it was the same for Demon King. It doesn't cost them anything and it's great advertising for their stores.

Man, GCCX is such a cheap show. It's probably considered a kind of side-show within Fuji TV.

The setting is just a space office in the Fuji TV building. The entire cast consist of Fuji TV employees. None of them are trained actors. The crew is very small and bare bones. Occasionally they go out to Game Centers.

The majority of the budget is likely eaten up by editing, Arino's salary, and game and music rights.

No wonder Fuji TV loves it and has kept it around for 15 years. It's even cheaper than most "Reality TV".

The game is split into several parts. The first part follows Tsubasa on Sao Paulo FC as they win the Brazil Rio Cup. The second part follows Tsubasa's old team Nankatsu as they attempt to win the Japanese nationals.

Basically two separate tournaments where you play as two entirely different teams. The two teams' storylines will eventually intersect in the later parts of the game. It's pretty long.

This is why so many translators have trouble with understanding/translating Japanese. Japanese is more context-heavy than, say, English, especially if a text is only in Kana. You have to guess from the context who is talking about what and which word is used with what meaning.

>>5002028
>>5002034
And even though this anon has a very good understanding of Japanese, he still gets it wrong the first time because he didn't have the context. Translating Japanese is, probably like translating most languages, 80% researching/googling/reading up on stuff, which most translators are either too lazy or dumb to do. In most cases, googling about the term/sentence in question in Japanese clears everything up, but hardly anyone does it.

\rant about fansubs

>> No.5002108

>>5002103
I admit I fucked up, but I'd never actually attempt to sub something like this episode, which is based on a franchise I know nothing about, without assistance from someone who's actually familiar with the franchise and knows its terminology.

I wouldn't really chalk this up to a fansub thing, most fansubbers are familiar with the franchise they're subbing, and situations like this, where you suddenly need to know a bunch of shit from some entirely different franchise, are rare.

>> No.5002115

>>5002108
But isn't that what translating is really about? You will have to do research to find out the context and make a good translation according to it - and even localize and make the reference understandable to a western audience if it's something very Japanese!

>> No.5002116

Eh, the translation looks shoddy, but still better than nothing anyway.

>> No.5002123

>>5002115
No, translation is usually about translating a relatively self-contained work you have in front of you. This is more like translating an interview with a director of a movie you've never watched. The only people that do that are professional TV documentary subbers, and their output ALWAYS end up full of mistranslations for that exact reason.

This. So many Japanese drama series have been ruined by this and the Japanese drama fansub scene is atrocious, for some reason. The anime fansub scene is a lot better, but they also fucked up with many series. Maybe it's an unfair example, but the subs of Gintama are often so mediocre it's strange that it has fans in the west at all. Not only do they not get many of reference, the translation itself is so stiff that it's just not funny anymore.

Golden rule: Almost every time something feels off when you're watching something with subs and you feel like something someone said doesn't make any sense, the subs are to blame.

The manga scanlation scene is even worse, largely because it's harder for people to pick up on mistranslations when the translators remove all traces of the original dialogue. There's been three new GCCX subs and a stack of Yoiko subs out since around the beginning of this season. At least it's better than it had been.

>> No.5021542

Why is it so hard to get subs consistently for this show? Most Japanese series, major and niche, have dedicated sub groups that finish new episodes in days if not hours. I can see Kamen Rider, Sentai, Dragon Ball, One Piece, sometimes other comedy and variety stuff like Gaki, very quickly after they air so what is the problem here? I understand it would take longer for a solid hour show with the variety of content and all the different elements of the games that have to be subtitled. I could understand if it took weeks. I can't understand it taking years. Does GCCX just have an extra lazy, shitty fanbase? Why is there no one willing to fill the void and sub new episodes quickly, encode the videos properly, and not hardsub the fuckers?

Don't kid yourself, outside of anime less than 1% of Japanese TV ever gets translated. Outside of lowest common denominator trash like Downtown's shows and boyband shit that idol fags drool over, no one is translating variety.

GCCX has hour long episodes and mostly unscripted dialogue with Arino's off-the-wall style of comedy not making it any easier, and when coupled with requiring quite a bit of domain-specific knowledge, I'd argue it's actually one of the more difficult shows out there to translate. You're really lucky to have gotten as many episodes as you have already.

Just because they use fansubs for official releases doesn't mean they'd never have released those shows if they didn't have fansubs that could be used. There's been a number of toku DVD releases that did not use fansubs as a base, including the first few American Super Sentai sets.

Nice joke. Look at Gaki, it took them what, 8 months to translate the New Year's batsu game? And that's just the show you've heard of.

When was the last time you saw Tetsuwan Dash translated? How many episodes of Ougon Densetsu have you seen, when Hamaguchi says とったどー! do you even know what he's referencing? Do you even know 1/50th of the comedians you might see on a weekly variety show? The English penetration into Japanese culture is absolutely laughable. You get a look at late-night anime, shows for children, and dramas for bored housewives.

Links are in the OP.
Season 1 involved Arino visiting various game companies and interviewing famous game creators, with a minor segment being him challenging a specific game, the challenge usually being something short and easy like getting a specific bonus.
Season 2 expanded the challenge to be the main focus, with interviews just taking up 5 minutes or so and introduced arcade trips.
Season 3 and on replaced the interviews with season-specific sub-segments. The current season's sub-segment involves Arino trying out a rather obscure arcade game for a couple minutes.
Season 1 only has half the episodes subbed, with shitty guess subs for the challenge segment only for the other half, while season 2 only has guess subs.

Do with this info what you want. Links are in the OP.

Bit of both, I'd say. We do know that they clear the arcade visits with the arcade ahead of time, which is also the reason for the relative lack of arcade visits on the DVDs - they need to negotiate new contracts with the arcades for that, since the original agreement was just for a TV broadcast.

But it's also pretty clear that when a TV crew comes in and starts playing your games, you pay attention to them and make sure they get help when they need it. You want your arcade to look good on TV.

I'm on season 11 at the moment and are there any other AD's that leave that big an impact? Sasano was really good at games, Urakawa stayed for 2 seasons and Toujima always popped up. Then after Sasano and Urakawa we had rookie Inoko MAX and that made him stand out a little. But I can barely remember any of the AD's since then and I only started watching a couple of years ago.

Of the other ones you would have seen so far, I'd say Nakayama is pretty memorable.

The newer seasons also have a few ADs that stand out, but some of them don't have a lot of subbed episodes yet.
