This is game is completely fucking nuts, holy shit. Within the first act you transform into an Evangelion for no reason, and during the second act you're flying on top of a hovering piece of debris as you're taking out fighter planes and massive battleships with your piddly handgun. All the stages are practically oozing creativity, every stage and boss is something completely new. The amount of action on screen is crazy, especially for a N64. It's already a feat that it can actually run this game.

Are there more games like this? How does the sequel hold up?

Panzer Dragoon II is superior.

S&P has:
>auto-aim function (lame)
>no branching level structure
>annoying children with awful VA
>bad game flow (you make too many stops)
>extremely easy (have to unlock Hard mode)
>blocky 3D models and ugly, dull aesthetics

Damn man, I love Zwei, but you're cynic.
>auto-aim funcion (lame)
Not really, auto-aim is far weaker than the manual shots, meaning you can't really rely on it for most of the game. You're supposed to toggle between manual and auto depending on the strat you need given any needed situation, auto is useful when you need to focus more on dodging, but most of the time you should be using manual, if you want to actually kill timed mini bosses and stuff, otherwise auto shots won't cut it.
And again, I love Zwei, but just to argue against you, since you're so cynic, I'll be cynic and say Zwei's berserk is "lame" since you just press a button and watch everything on screen get killed.
>no branching level structure
This is true, S&P also doesn't have Zwei's dragon evolving mechanic. However, I find S&P's levels more engaging, as OP said, the action on screen is crazy, Zwei has a lot of moments where nothing is really happening.
>annoying children with awful VA
You don't like Airan's voice? You gay son? Anyway: Completely skippable cutscenes. You have no excuse.
>bad game flow (you make too many stops)
I thought in S&P the cabal parts are handled in a way that don't really break the game's flow at all. You never stop shooting and dodging/jumping.
>extremely easy
I mean, these kind of games are based on memorization. I wouldn't call S&P "extremely easy" though, and at least it has a hard mode, even if you have to unlock it.
>blocky 3D models and ugly, dull aesthetics
You're complaining about blocky 3D models on a 5th gen game? Call the press.

PDZ is designed from the outset that you can do a perfect play.

To address OP's question of whether or not the sequel holds up, since this turned into a Zwei vs. S&P debate I'm going to say yes, it actually goes above and beyond imo. It adds some elements of other rail shooter types including bullet hells. I can't recall much of the plot as I haven't played it in years, and I played it in Japanese since I wasn't ever expecting a western release

There's a lot more variety in the areas and enemies because of the Wii's superior hardware, and a lot more ways to approach the enemies with the addition of a jetpack, more enemies that have sweetspots using the sword as opposed to shooting - encouraging you getting up close and personal with a lot of enemies, and just a more streamlined control method. Using the Wiimote to aim feels awesome and very intuitive. The music in the sequel is much better imo as well. I can't really compare difficulty as I haven't played either game in years, but I nearly made it to the end of 2 on hard mode while only ever being able to make it maybe a quarter way through the original on normal

Thinking of stage 3-2, are there any other sidescrolling games where you can aim along the plane you are moving on and into the background simultaneously? Because other than in S&P where it was only a one-stage ordeal and in maybe Star Successor I can't think of any other game which does this. You even get trees as cover which block the line of fire between you and background enemies.

As far as I know there isn't another rail shooter that recaptures the feel of the first S&P exactly, but the sequel is great in it's own way and is the premier rail shooter on the Wii.
