Slaughtermaps (by which I refer to the likes of chillax, holy hell, and drown in blood) just plain suck. The levels themselves are nothing nice to look at, since any sort of detail would detract from the number of monsters they're able to spam. The gameplay is poor and consists of either running away or holding M1 with a rocket launcher, plasma rifle, or BFG. There's nothing interesting about the layouts and the maps are either stupidly linear or require tons of backtracking. The choice of music is often subpar and underwhelming, which complements the boring gameplay well but is still bad. In spite of all the monsters, the maps aren't so much difficult as they are tedious, which is where Russian Overkill comes in. However, even with RO to make the fighting less tedious, the maps are still ugly and boring. Despite the incredible modding community and the amount of time they've had, I don't think they've made a mod to fix that.

At least the Virge had the same 2D performance in DOS as the Trio, and with more VRAM, so you could do Build engine games in 800x600 with almost no slowdown. But yeah, the 3D performance sucked.

My first 3d accelerator was a Voodoo 3 AGP that was in our family's eMachines. My PC at the time had a 1MB S3 Trio64.
Later I got myself a 32MB Asus/Nvidia TNT2 AGP, and used that up until the Geforce FX came out. The LAN parties I went to consisted mainly of Doom, UT99, Quake II (not 3 arena, no one I knew had it), and Serious Sam at the time, so it worked.

One isn't really "better" than the other, they are just different.

Zandronum is oriented more towards mods and the GZDoom community whereas Odamex is more of a purist's online Doom.
However, unlike Chocolate Doom, Odamex is Boom-compatible, so it removes limits, allowing for bigger maps and other various tweaks.
