After a couple of hours playing Alberts Story in Romancing SaGa 1 I've decided to restart now that I know more about the game. Even though I didn't make all that much progress in the grand scheme of things I already feel much more equipped and knowledgeable about the game.

This time around I'm writing down what all the shops are selling, where the magic shops are located and I'm writing down all the quest information I get.

My first time playing I made the mistake that this could be played like the Final Fantasy Legend Games. This was an incorrect presumption on my part, this game seems much more demanding and requires a lot more effort to get into and succeed at. It's less Final Fantasy and more Ultima if that makes sense. Originally I thought a lot of its mechanics and world design was poorly made and admittedly it IS a pretty clunky game. However I'm really warming up to it and all the weird idiosyncrasies it contains.

I think in total I've played about 16 hours I wanna say, the fact that I felt the immediate urge to restart and keep playing says a lot about the games unique style

>> No.4940279

>>4940089
Thats the thing about the franchise, really. Its base gameplay is just so fun and satisfying that restarting doesn't feel too bad.
Personally, I think RS2 is as close to perfect as a JRPG can get. My only beef with it is having to set up a new team after a timeskip takes a little longer than I would personally like.

my biggest complaint as well. Magic learning in particular is extremely clunky with a dialogue you have to mash through for every spell, and it's in the opposite direction of the other castle facilities so you run around Avalon a lot.

>> No.4940910

>>4939987
Actually I think RS2's progression is pretty intuitive, I didn't get lost in it unlike other games. You say you've unlocked Subier; do you mean you finished the pirate ship quest? If so, and you didn't encounter him there, the ocean diver lady would have told you Subier is in the frozen sea. Now you just need to commandeer a ship and go after him. Do you remember another time you (had the option to) commandeer a ship?

What sort of details and guides are you looking for? There are some japanese websites and the anons on /vr/ know everything about the game. Also if this is your first playthrough it's best to hold off on the guides for now.

>It's less Final Fantasy and more Ultima if that makes sense.
You're not wrong, SaGa games are definitely influenced by Ultima in terms of structure and general progression.
What I like about the series though is that while you can definitely see how much Ultima influenced it it also goes beyond that to become its own thing, especially from Romancing SaGa 2 onwards, but it still keeps the same Ultima feeling and to this day I consider SaGa the only series which picked up the classic Ultima's legacy and expanded upon it.

It does help to know that Kawazu's favorite game of all time is indeed Ultima 4.
>However I'm really warming up to it and all the weird idiosyncrasies it contains.
You're on the right path then, and yes, a lot of the design decisions in RS1 are admittedly poor and clunky, though with that first hand experience you'll appreciate the huge step in quality with Romancing SaGa 2 even more.

You don't really need to unless you've been neglecting your magic, just focus on your equipment, plenty of great stuff to hoard from dungeons that will also help you out managing money.

Just to give you a few pointers though:
-You should never be low on WP/JP, check your treasury for all the recovery herbs that get restocked on each generation,
-Formations/Magic/Equipment>>>>>>>>raw stats
-The game has more content than you think, explore and explore some more
-Swap your classes around often, don't underestimate the beastmen classes, they can be very powerful if used right
-Talk to people, visit places you've already visited, sometimes there's new stuff to see or do

All of them bar GB SaGa 3(Play the DS remake) and maybe Romancing SaGa 1 because it's a product of its time and a huge experiment where many things went right but a lot of other things went absolutely wrong, so you can forget about it if you aren't a diehard fan and play the PS2 remake.

SaGa's an exceptional series with each game being pretty much its own thing, there's no absolute definite list because it's hard to compare games that are so vastly different in design.
However, you should definitely start with these and see if you like what you're playing:
>SaGa 2, either GB or the DS remake are fine
>SaGa Frontier, which is the most popular game in the series
>Romancing SaGa 3 has almost the same status as SaGa Frontier in terms of popularity

If you got stomped by Dantarg go do some other quests and come back. Grinding making the game harder is a myth (you fight stronger enemies but you'll overpower them anyway). However it's not recommended to grind because grinding isn't fun and making the game easier isn't fun.

For me Unlimited is hit and miss. Some of the character scenarios are really all around fun to play and enjoy like Ruby and Ventus, but others are more of a pain in the ass that I dread having to go through, like the early part of Kurt, Judy, and Armic

Being able to abuse the panel system to make some strong characters is really fun though

They don't have any rng to them, in fact if you have good timing you can hit the same reel in the same spot every single time in battle.

The ones on the field, like dodging traps or picking locks, have some luck to them, but the panels are all the same as well, and there are ways to minimize risk by aiming for a group of greens in case the reel does slip a few spots

Unlimited would have benefitted from having a more open structure and multiple ways to solve quests.
Battle, dungeon and character building wise it's probably the best game in the series for me, but the game is really hampered by having so so quest and scenario design most of the times, it's the same exact mistake they kept on repeating since SaGa Frontier and only really got out of with Minstrel Song.

What pains me the most though is how I'll never see another entry with that kind of design philosophy, I'd pay good money for an Unlimited 2.0 with the open world and progression system from Scarlet Grace and Tomomi's art instead of Naora's.
I wouldn't even care that much about rebalancing weapons and the stats, just being able to have more elasticity in terms of game progression would be enough.

I can only pray that Kawazu stays defiant for the next mainlines and keeps on working and expanding on the new tabletop base instead of going back to the old "videogamey" standard, though this format is still pretty unpopular for obvious reasons.

Bit of a spoiler since you appear to have hit a wall will Subier, so read at your own risk.
Subier appears after different amounts of time depending on whether you made peace of forced Enrique to surrender when you first found Nuono. If you made peace with Enrique you'll need two generation skips iirc, then Gallon will appear and conquer Nuono, after having completed his quest the Ghost ship will appear near Toba and you'll need to talk to Maria, the little girl in the bar, to start the quest, this will trigger one of the two possible encounter points with Subier.
If Subier doesn't appear during the ghost ship quest then you'll need to find him in the other encounter point by using the same ship you used to travel to Nuono.

>>4944240
Good list, I agree with most of your points.
I just want to add some points regarding certain characters:
>Ruby
She has a unique problem regarding party composition, since she only gains more party members outside of the main team by doing some of the Seven Wonders, that means you have to be extra careful about the order of those depending on how you want to develop your team.
If you want Anzan as a dedicated tank/earth user then you'll need to do the Nakle Lines ASAP, which means facing Tagut and not having an exploitable Tetra Force, this could be potentially very hard, tricky characters like Grace also have a similar problem in the sense that they need more time than others to properly develop.
>Kurt
His own Gauntlet gimmick can potentially make the game unwinnable if you're not well developed and equipped by the time you get to do Edel's quest, this is because the Gauntlet will keep sucking you in extra battles based on real time timers, and while you're spending turns in those Gauntlet battles monsters keep on spawning in the city and messing up your quest to the point that it's very easy to enter an infinite loop or wear down your characters/equipment to the point of no return.

>>4944381
Ah, thank you for the feedback! I'm glad to hear a second opinion on it.

Good points for Ruby's and Kurt's quests. You bring up a good point with Ruby especially because after looking through her team roster, I noticed that a lot of the characters need an extended amount of development time before they hit their stride. It's a point that gets overshadowed by Iskandar being strong enough to carry the team to the very end, but it's definitely one that I should address in my guide. Players should really utilize the Tetra Forces in each of the Seven Wonders. I didn't have it written down but I did mention verbally to a friend of mine to "always save Deities' Table for the sixth" so they can spend time building up characters.

Also, I completely didn't think about that part in Kurt's scenario lol. By then I do believe you have a full party (minus Hiro but hes a bench character in this quest for me :p ) but its still fairly early in for Kurt, so not having some decent setups for a couple characters can really make things dire. I do like that particular scenario for being able to raise up monster rank quickly though, it's very convenient, and Edel is my favorite character, so..

Other than that, the only scenario I really haven't spent much time on is Armic's because I never enjoyed it enough to play through it more than a couple of times. It's a neat story gimmick, but I wish that you weren't handicapped a character over it, since for me the roster was kind of lackluster. So any advice on his would be great for me to throw in.

You made a good list so I do not think there's anything to correct or add to any of those, especially for beginners.

I personally don't agree with Kurt's party being all that great because outside of Armand there's not many true easy mode characters as in Judy's scenario, that said Armand is so bullshit strong he could easily solo the game so eh.

Still, Josef, Platy and Mordeus aren't as strong as you make them out to be, Josef is at its best in Kurt's story, funnily enough, but he still needs special care since he's the frailest character in the game, Platy is a mixed specialist so while she can be a wonderful wood mage you'll need to farm tablet for her, and either Hiro or Vent outclass her as an LP attacker, Mordeus is also frail for what he is and he's kind of tacked on given how both Armand and Edel are both much better than him at being weapon users and you get Armand early on too, I really don't get why they give you Mordeus instead of say, a female character.

Nothing wrong with short battles.
JRPGs with battles that last longer do so because they either have:
>Longass battle animations
>Forced gameplay loops that aren't challenging and bring nothing to the battle design
>Damage sponges
Or all of the above, but if you want to say that something like FFIX is more fun than something like RS2 or Frontier because the battles last 5 minutes each at minimum, I don't know what to tell you.

But I'd be really curious to see anon win against things like Termite Fighters, Kaiser Ants or Chariots on Free Fight by spamming normal attacks like he said he does, let alone fighting something like the Spriggan with that mindset, this is without considering Frontier.

Then again, I guess spamming attacks and healing loops against HP sponges is a much better battle design than what SaGa does in his eyes so more power to him I guess, though I wonder why he's even here at this point.

the battle reels actually start at different spin locations depending on how fast you press the button to link the next reel, and how the techniques relate to each other as combos, it is 100% based on timing and factors which are fixed and predetermined before the event occurs.

to be fair this about how hard the game is if you force your way through the intro with luck and then immediately abuse the scrap and gold trick to buy the best equipment.

You can just get 5 swordguys and stomp through everything with your zero swords and powered suits

not only that, the reel only slips when youre doing field stuff, like lockpicking, dodging traps, diplomacy, etc. in battle the reel never slips, with good timing you can hit the tiles you want 100% of time in battle

Well, if that's the case of course you shouldn't.
Though I really hate this region locking thing in online services, free market my ass, I shouldn't be forced to make a specific region's account and order some steam cards just because they want to control pricing and suck my wallet dry, I shouldn't go through all kind of hoops just to buy a fucking game.

I'm actually still pondering whether to buy the JP version or wait it out for the western version just to show there's people here who want SaGa localized.

So, the Vita version of Scarlet Grace is eventually getting an upgrade, didn't think Kawazu managed to pull it off.

https://twitter.com/SaGa25kawazu/status/1025013279565856769

It probably will keep the shitty lighting, FPS issues from the original version given the Vita's specs unless they really work on it, still amazing that it's even getting an upgrade given how garbage Squenix has been, I'm honestly surprised.

Long story short they proceeded to smack me. Seems they use blunt attacks and hypnosis which I can defend against but I don't have the dodge for pheromone and I'm on my final emperor. I wanna try looking for something to fight to dodge it but idk if it's worth the time. Does getting a black screen add wazas to your bank or does it need to be a true gen skip? I still have 1 more hero to fight so I know I can force at least 1 more black screen.

Also does anyone know a good place to spark at endgame? I'm fighting light dragons but haven't gotten much yet. My sword wazas are shit (my best single target is slice) so I really wanna get something better before I go back.

The latter.

Albions are generally the go to, you can find them at high BR from any fish type enemy, they're those big narwhale like monsters.

Getting a black screen will add wazas to the bank if you're on the final emperor.

I'm pretty sure black screens update spark lists IF you're on the final emperor.

>spark at endgame
Since you're using the maze of memories, you can use the top floor of the water dungeon. The albions can let you spark the best 1-h sword tech (and anything else).

Also what do you guys think of the RS2 remaster additional content? I think it's better to do a first playthrough without it and then maybe check it out on a second playthrough since it will mess up the original difficulty curve.

Amen to that. I do think a bit of rebalancing would be nice to see for certain mechanics, or just some quality of life buffs for some stuff too. What kinds of things would you like to see changed in terms of gameplay?

One that jumps out at me would be having monster rank influence learning rate of tablets, higher rank monster = more points towards a spell at the end of battles. I do think something along the lines of being able to not be forced to change a panel after each successful adventure would be nice as well. That and having a chance to slightly increase a stat based on growth after each adventure would be nice to have too, sometimes when doing a bunch of side adventures, it feels like at times you're not even making progress if you're only getting mediocre level panels after being a dozen plus hours into a scenario. If they had the durability system go the way of the RS remake, where you could pay a small fee to repair everything to full between adventures, and use the smithing system for combining items to make new ones and/or increase max durability ratings would be a nice qol change, as having to go through and repair each character's weapons and gear every couple adventures can get really taxing. That, and it could be a Crown sink since after a point money starts to matter very little.

Otherwise, I really love the formulaic approach to it all and I'd kill to see a similar game try the same kinds of innovation.

>What kinds of things would you like to see changed in terms of gameplay?
-Nerf SKL because it's a hilariously broken stat, either that or rebalance base LP damage multipliers
-Rebalance weapon multipliers, either globally or nerf equipment after Steel tiers
-Let people skip panel selections, having a dump panel is stupid
-Remove Tablet learning EXP and change it into an after battle spark chance, either that or severely cut the EXP needed for anything but base spells up to tier 3, Master/Forbidden tablets take ages to learn for no good reason
-Change weapon durability system to Minstrel Song's standard so stronger techs consume more DP, that way you also can't spam things like Reverse Delta mercilessly even with things like Recycle or Repair panels
-Multiple ways to solve quests with meaningful rewards for doing so, they are far too linear
-Make towns the same as dungeons(but with no turn count) so you can interact with NPCs by using new panels dedicated to NPC interaction or rework old panels like Maharaja, that way people won't complain too much about the minimalistic design too.
-Fix guns
-Allow players to choose which NG+ bonuses they want to carry over, I like things like monster ecology but Market Rank breaks the game
-Maybe give each MC a larger, non fixed cast pool instead of the same small roster each time, though that would probably be hard for thematic MCs like Mythe or Laura
-Give all MCs multiple main story branches, Only Kurt and Laura have those and they're pretty bad too
-Maybe make Jeanne, Leon, Dagul Bos, Yun, Clive and Kalandorn/Tooth recruitable in certain scenarios, Basil Galeos would be cool too
>Add more story sequences for Iskandar and the Silver Haired Girl storylines, this would greatly benefit Ruby's story since the game never points out that she's a descendant of Alice and the knife quest is directly tied to that.
-Fix all the wrong names like Armand, Mordeus or Leith.
