Oh, cool. Always love to see more of unreleased things. Doesn't look like we missed out on much, seems like just another forgettable arcade puzzle game with Sonic themes randomly slapped on it because of the character's popularity.

>>4941248
>some type of drama BS is why we're
Yes, I am sure it is a personal attack directly against you.

This does come up from time to time. It is the right of the owner to dump, or not their property. And no, there is no obligation whatsoever to ensure that all the nerds can play a half finished beta title.

I support every owner of one of a kind software who makes it a point to say "I have it, you can't/Now give me money". I hope he stores it away forever.

>> No.4942323

>>4942306
Seriously. If anyone has something interesting and undumped, try dumping it and releasing it for free and see just how generous the whining strangers on the internet are with sending you even a small amount of money after the fact to thank you for your efforts and for devaluing your collectible.

It's about preservation of lost media. The PCB will always be worth thousands because it's a unique, one-of-a-kind prototype.

There are hundreds of undumped games. Just because a game is dumped or undumped has no impact on the value. You can play every revision and region version of Battle Garegga in Mame and Final Burn Alpha but that doesn't stop the actual boards from selling for thousands of dollars, and that was a game that was actually mass-produced, unlike a prototype with an extremely limited/unknown number.

It depends on how you view video games. Do you see these strictly through the eyes of a collector counting dollar values, or do you see this as another form of media that should be preserved, like the Mame developers or TCRF guys?

>> No.4942870

>>4942323
what the fuck? why is he owed money for just happening to own a super rare copy of a game he didn't make. i say he's obligated to put it online for preservation's sake and for everyone to see rather than just arbitrarily deciding it belongs to him and only him

Part of the value of undumped games/versions is the fact that they aren't dumped, and the collector market for those is not the same as the market for retail games. Do they often sell for more than their loose cart retail equivalent? Sure. More than a complete copy? Well, not always. Yes, some people are willing to pay the equivalent of several thousand for a Gradius ROM version PCB, but obviously those same people don't care about the very few of a kind prototype/location test version of Macross II which has been for sale on Yahoo (and now ebay) for years and years despite being even rarer and, with the current asking price, costing several thousand less. Something like an unreleased Sonic game will probably retain value more than most prototypes following dumping because it is Sonic, but even Frank Cifaldi who has been dumping and releasing stuff for years admits that releasing things tends to diminish the value of the original piece.

And yes, I definitely support things like this being preserved, but what I do not support are people demanding that other people do this or that with their games without the complainers themselves doing anything to help the process. If someone actually actively dumps things on their own, I would say that they have more ground to complain about others not doing the same. Otherwise, I just don't see how some feel justified in demanding others do something while they are unwilling to put themselves out for the same cause. If someone downloads a prototype that they enjoyed, maybe they could take the effort tofind out who dumped it, get in touch, and send them $5 or something as a token gesture of appreciation instead of just demanding more and more from people who are under no obligation to do anything for free.

>> No.4942997

>>4942870
>happening to own
Most people who have these things nowadays don't just "happen" to own them, they most likely bought them. I'd say that since you care about game preservation, you're obligated to spend your money on undumped games and dump them yourself.

>>4942881
Maybe he's playing it? Enjoying it himself? Taking it to conventions and letting other people play it? Maybe it doesn't matter because he bought it and can now do what he wants with it?

Just like people who feel that other people should take the burden of game preservation on themselves, at their own expense, without receiving any compensation from people who demand such things be preserved and released. Again, I'm not arguing against preservation (of course not), but I just think if it matters so much to people, why don't they try to take efforts to help instead of just screaming on the internet about other people not freely sharing things they spent hundreds if not a thousand+ to obtain?

I actually do donate to the EFF, and support them fully in defending video games from censorship. If there was an organization that was trying to preserve abandoned video games by making them open & free, I would donate to them too.. I also donate to local causes because I do care about my community. Do you donate to causes you care about?
All abandonware should be free & open to the public, in my opinion. The fact that owners of these rare game own them and don't preserve them by making them public, legit upsets me. And SegaSonic Bros is abandonware that should be open & free. I am aware though that no one should adhere to my feelings.

I would argue that software is still owned by sega. dump all you want, it's still piracy.

anyway.. it's just a system c board game (an enhanced megadrive platform with a faster cpu, better sample playback and more colours) of an incredibly boring, sonic themed version of columns.

The PCB's functionality has nothing to do with the functionality of the cabinet they have it in. From the bit of cab I can see, it is probably just a standard Japanese candy cab. I highly doubt Sega made a dedicated cabinet for a game like this, they probably always intended for it to just be placed in an Aero City or Astro City or something.
