It does in my opinion a better job at being respectful with previous entries while at the same time taking advantage of its 3D capabilities.

A lot of people in the late 90s conflated 3D with realistic graphics and smooth animation. It's why DKC managed to fool so many, and it's also why 3D characters on prerendered backgrounds was considered more impressive than 2D characters in a 3D world. So DQVII's graphics were considered dated at the time.

Have you seen what god looks like in DQVII? Toriyama really lost it for a while after the cell saga, the heroes are alright design wise but god that whole game looks like shit otherwise, even Beyond the Beyond looks better.

The best aesthetic in my opinion. I absolutely love how the playstation fucks up the rendering so the 3d looks jittery as it moves. There's nothing really like it in any other art style. The second best thing is software rendering on early 3d games like thief or something.

It does solve the problem of buildings and perspective looking like ass in 2D JRPGs, I'll give it that.
But it still looks like blurry PS1 textures pasted on simplistic PS1 polygons, and the sprites look like cardboard cutouts. Just doesn't match the potential beauty of drawn sprites or the immersion of a fully 3D game.
All it really works for is giving a nostalgic aesthetic on newer hardware, like in Octopath.
