Really? I love the darker atmosphere and weird and twisting environments.

Pretty plain, admittedly, but it's an M1. There's a few neat secrets here if you know where to look.
One of the best levels in the game IMO, Sandy Petersen takes the misguided semi-realism Tom Hall thought he was supposed to pursue, and makes for an environment that's more quasi-realistic, but with lots of weird and fantastical elements.
Admittedly, the damaging floors are a bit annoying, but mostly I think it's fun.
A sprawling level full of weird and interesting layouts and setups. Has a bit of that quasi-realism of E2M2 going.
Lots of secrets in this map, including a secret exit. I enjoy the exploration aspect of it.
Concept level. Not actually that great IMO, but at least it's brief, and you can get out of there with full health and armor, and lots of rockets.
Dark and spooky as fuck, also disorienting, if there's any part of Doom that really gets that horror aspect, then it's this level. The wooden labyrinth is disorienting and crawling with dangerous demons, you feel the urge to avoid it, but you have to go in there to get the key to leave. Lots of tricks and traps.
One of my favorites, this does a lot of what made E2M2 good in my opinion (exploration and warped quasi-realism), it's a large map that serves as a nice lead-up for the end of the episode.
Actually kind of plain and not that interesting, the first time the Cyberdemon may come off as rather imposing, but he isn't actually used in a particularly thoughtful way, dodging him is easy. At least he looks badass.

The music and texture choices I think are overall pretty great, and serve the episode well.

Mods that offers the best varied/chaotic gameplay possible. Which means, lots of demons attacking you at once that does not ruin the "run and gun" nature of the game while at the same time oferring varied types of vanilla-friendly weapons. Because when making Doom 2, Romero was high off his ego, and frequently absent from work, meaning that Sandy Petersen, their main mapper, had to pick up his slack to fill the level count, and this would sometimes get rushed.
So Doom 2 has a lot of maps of his, and a bunch of them aren't exactly golden, but they're not all shit either.

Mind that this guy made like half of all the maps for Doom and Doom 2.

Too much fucking steel. I'd use more concrete slabs, plastic linings, etc. Also put in some carpeting here and there, and the occasional wood furniture. Probably also use more paint and coloring to make areas more distinct.
I quite like the hell levels.

I'd change up the weapons too, the chainsaw should be available earlier in the game (even if as a secret), the pistol should, to make up for its shit damage, be able to fire as fast as you can click, the shotgun should have a much tighter spread, so you don't have to use it as a fucking contact weapon to make it useful at all.
The subgun should fire in quick 3rd bursts, to set it apart from the chaingun, which should be able to feed from one continuous belt and fire twice as fast, to balance it, either maybe make it build up heat from a lot of sustained fire and it having to slow down or even stop once it gets really hot, or make some stronger enemies and bosses resistant (but not immune) to it's bullets.
I'd change the bounce behavior of the grenade, and the throwing and other physics, because it's such a fucking awkward weapon to use that always seems to bounce exactly how you don't want it. I'd also just put it on a quick button, rather than have it be selectable as its own individual weapon.
The plasma gun is actually quite fine, as is the BFG.
I'd change the firing sounds on the shotgun, subgun and rocket launcher.
The flashlight should just be done like in BFG edition: a Half-Life style charge and you can toggle it with a command, shining from over your shoulder.

I'd then color up the monsters some, to make them more visually distinct, I'd make a few of them a little more aggressive, and I'd probably have the Cyberdemon fight redone completely. Otherwise, the other bossfights aren't bad.

Had a dream last night that there was a Doom mod from 2011 that was very similar to Adventures Of Square. The textures & general design were similarly cartoony, and the protag even made one-liners. Not really, it's extremely playable, weapon tiers make sense, monster replacements make sense. It's just aesthetically inconsistent really, and I couldn't care less about seeing powerslave and duke enemies at the same time. Hell aeod v6 actually lets you filter all enemies to be of from one theme alone and that's the version I like the least, cause it removed a ton of stuff from v5. Reminds me of Doomguy's Warzone but with a little more restraint regarding content aesthetics and matching the setting. Too many graphical effects and too few content of substance. Take less pages out of the books of mods besides DGW, AEOD, CP/LCA/CPCF, and so on and more out of mods like Doomzone, Legendoom, Doom RPG, and so on. Treat monsters as classes rather than things to replace with whatever comes to mind, and the experience will be more engaging imo.

My primary gripe with this style of modding is that once you have infinity bajillion monsters, many of them quickly feel the same. On top of that, don't make all the enemies just dance around a lot. It'll severely fuck with the flow of maps and in cramped rooms won't do anything but make them hug the walls and make them much easier to fight.

The graphical effects are also extremely tacky. If you want more blood, or explosions, try to make them fit with the aesthetic. Gigantic smoke bombs like this don't, and they clip through walls which makes them look even worse.

On to the good: The optimization is pretty impressive, I'm glad you didn't use 6 MB PNGs for literally every single sprite like most people used to back in the day. I haven't played this so I can't give you my word on how the game as a whole is in action, but based on the design choices I'm seeing in the video, it looks way less "Point out targets of priority in fights and fight accordingly" and more "just hold fire and kill everything that moves," which I mean, is relaxing, so if you're going for that that's totally fine, but if you're looking for an engaging experience, there's far better ways to do it.

Play Doomzone with a couple maps, then ramp it up to the first black difficulty setting. You'll probably see what I mean when I mention engaging gameplay in randomizer wads. You can have fucktons of monsters and weapons, just use them effectively instead of throwing them all at the player. Everyone has done that and played that.

There's better ways to handle random monster spawns than just throwing 99 bullshitllion monsters in a spawn slot. Let's say you have three melee enemies that charge. One goes quickly and does a little damage, one goes average for both, and the other goes slowly but does a lot more damage. What's the difference between them at the end of the day? They're charging melee enemies.

Why have so many suicide bombers? They're not necessarily a core mechanic, just an annoyance. It turns levels into constant arenas without any of the strategy or skill involved. If you want Serious Sam but with more monsters, just go mod for that instead; it's probably way easier and has a larger audience.

It's just an added thing that serves as artificial difficulty without any real value to it. If you kite the enemies outside of the smoke, it's no longer an issue. If you're in a situation where you can't see or escape because of the smoke and monster hordes, it's cheap, and also unfair, which isn't engaging either.

What's surprising about the game shitting out suicide bombers? That's like saying Lost Souls are a surprise element because they can come from Pain Elementals. You're just gonna get used to them after like two maps tops.

I still can't resolve my issue of the AI being broken. I'm playing AA wad with ketchup and RO.

so I have this idea for my first map, a basic techbase that is being overrun by flesh tendrils, I decided to begin simple by giving thinking an outline the player will have to take before doing any detail at all, I don't have a clear concept of what would make fun gameplay so Im just trying to figure out interesting encounters.

You begin in the hexagon in the lower left, you take a shotgun from a dead sergeant and look at the end of the corridor, surprise asshole! there's an archvile there and the doors are locked with their respective keycards, you are low on ammo so you have no other option besides heading downstairs to the room on the right.
You try to put as much distance as you can while you take everything that isn't nailed to the floor, there are some low tier enemies on the way so you will have to deal with them or try to rush past them as best you can.

Now the conceit of the map would be gaining access to an armory somewhere where you can gear up properly, deal with the archie and enter the final battle in the big room up north, maybe that will be a hangar of some sort, but that's where my creative juice dries up for now.

It felt like there wasn't enough ammo to properly 100% it. Didn't have enough by the end to kill the Cyberdemon, so I had to just lure it into a corner and take the lift to the ending quickly. really? the map felt super easy and fun for me, i was on UV and i only ran out of ammo for shotty twice before getting it all back, and ended with an excess
i almost died a few times too, but other than that, it's one of the better user made maps i've played
i didn't look for all the secrets though, but i did find some, like the chainsaw and the invis sphere, both of which came in handy
do some of the secrets have more enemies? your description of the map makes it sound like there was a slaughter map hidden in there somewhere

Yeah it's a bit pointless given that you don't have many smaller enemies to blow up with your fists. May change it for something else.

I might add more ammo for the cyberdemon fight. Might just end up refactoring it I dunno.

I might make that not a secret but I like to think that since it's tucked in a corner it's not very noticeable. A secret in plain sight, as it were.

Thanks so much for the video! A few points:
- The invis sphere is a secret opened by hitting use on the console in the yellow key room. There's two other consoles that open up secrets. Might change this. Will definitely set up the single-sided linedef like you said.

- The music does get a bit repetitive. Will change it out.

- I should've mentioned the engine, definitely. I tested it on both Chocolate Doom and Doom Retro.

- The flaming barrel room fight didn't go how I imagined it. The idea was that you get a chance to ambush the monsters in the room, but a caco spawns behind you, so you panic and run into the room and start a fight. The problem is is that smart players will back out and force the enemies into a bottleneck, which is both completely valid and totally not what I intended. I'll probably remove the caco entirely and try some other method for goading the player inside.

- Loved your reaction to both the mancubi and the brown barrel room. Latter definitely needs something, though, so I'll probably add some extra decorations or something.

- Cyberdemon arena's going to get reworked. Might go back and play E2M8 again or something. Any suggestions for WADs with good smallish Cyberdemon arenas for me to crib from?

when actual ammo consumption is put in, each unit of 'charge' will be one cell, it caps at 40 units of charge, and the amount of projectiles it fires/the recoil it produces is completely dependent on the amount of units used, the changing of the charging/firing animations is more cosmetic than anything.

TL:DR if you fully charge this, it uses 40 cells and launches 40 projectiles, sort-of-but-not-really like the vanilla bfg-spray.

Wonderful recommendation. Quake 1 is one of my favorites, the setting is so peculiar but nonetheless inspiring. Raw, dark, medieval, gothic, lovecraftianesque... I fucking love it. Today i'll probably pass a great day if i replay that masterpiece... There isn't a single thing that was off on that title, it's astonishing even to this day. Scoredoom multiplayer with a friend. Competing for score in real time completely changed how I interpreted Doom. You got points for getting keys first, finding secrets first, killing monsters first, and reaching the exit first, but also lost points for dying. So it turned co-op into this furious, ultra-efficient race of burning through the map as fast as possible while also trying to kill monsters first and deciding if hopping into a secret was worth it, not to mention trying not to run out of ammo or die because you're throwing yourself headfirst into every encounter. I had a giant smile on my face the whole time, literally shouting when I managed to hit an exit first or when I saw him die.

That was easily the most exciting, joyous experience I ever had with Doom. Then he got busy and we never did it again, and Scoredoom stopped updating and no one really tried to carry the torch again. Oh well.

It turns you (partially) invisible, but if you have supernatural healing in your system (potions, soulspheres, megaspheres), it'll violently react to the evil magic that the blursphere works on. Namely, you'll burn to death very quickly. Like I said though, it doesn't do anything unless you actually use it. You could potentially hold onto it, avoid consuming spheres and potions, and use it later on when you know you're clean. If all you've had is one potion, it shouldn't last longer than a map or two as long as you aren't playing completely perfectly and never getting hit at all.

The blursphere not only turns you invisible, but similar to how blue magic can occasionally revive enemies into allies and grows flowers, the blursphere can sometimes light enemies on fire.
Also, blue magic is actually good magic, while blur magic is evil magic. If you're playing Co-op and have blue in your system while an ally puts on a ring, the blue magic will react negatively to the ring, and kill them.

Hey I need some help... I just switched computers and when I went to load up Slade it gave me an instant dll error. Its not finding the dlls for the VC redistributable.

It's kind of good, and I actually liked some of the challenge, but full on hardcore slaughter just isn't for me, it's busywork for me, and I'm not very good at it.

On the other hand, if you like slaughter, New Gothic seems like it'd be a pretty good romp. A few of the maps were fucking ugly, but a lot of them were very beautiful.
It was fun seeing a cyberdemon shoot a rocket at a pinkie though, and the pinkie abruptly exploding, his arms, legs and head flying separate ways, then the cyber resuming its attention to me.

Looking through other conversations, it doesn't seem like there's much difference between then and now. Some people think it's great, some people think it's good, some people think it's bad, some people think just American McGee's levels are bad, most people saying they're very hard (a couple thinking they're designed only for co-op play), at least a couple people think they're too easy. Some people complained that the levels weren't cohesively connected, some people complained that the quality was very uneven, a few people knew the truth and said that E4M2 and E4M6 are masterpieces.

Also I'm playing Doom 2 with gzdoom first, heard theirs not much of a difference between it and the first one so is playing it with a sourceport first fine or should I go full vanilla?

You could go either way.
A lot of the maps are a bit weaker in Doom 2, but I think it's worth playing until Map 11 at least, with Map 12 it gets a lot less fun and most of the maps which follow aren't nearly as good.

Doesn't seem likely since he built the engine from the ground up. They have nothing on in legally.
