What do you think about the strider games?

>> No.4928816

I think that 1 is really a product of its time and kind of pointless. 2 was really cool, but suuper short. I really wish they had expanded his story a little more and used a different villain than the Grand Master again.

I like them, but 2 is sort and doesn't let you save that I'm aware of.

I've only played the NES one, and maybe it's the nostalgia talking since it was a childhood game, but I like it. It's not great, but it's good enough.

The remake had some really fun platforming, the character moved really well.

I kind of wished it didn't all take place in the same location, though. They tried to mix up the environments a bit but it didn't feel like it had as much variety as some of the previous games did. Something like the NES game with the remake's gameplay would be perfect.

I think the original arcade was the best. It captured a sensation of momentum like nothing else I played at the time.

Strider 2 was competent, but the stage transitions were really jarring. Compare that to Strider 1 where you'd be in control through the entirety of stage 2 (mountain, cliff, base, air-transport thingies, aircraft).

I was never into the more "adventure" Striders (NES, reboot).

I couldn't get into Osman. The levels were too bizarrely designed.

My point is that a games difficulty shouldn't come into play when deciding how good it is. If a game is fun to play but easy, that isn't a mark against it. If a game is fun and difficult, that's cool too.

Holy fucking shit, are you a Wizard OP? I am playing the Strider 2014 reboot and just finished the horrible NES game this morning (and now i'm trying to apply the recent Strider 1&2 patch but to no success)

As of right now, I'm fucking LOVING the games. Another classic game from capcom that I come to love now although these new reboots are muuuuch better in every aspect compared to the classic games from the NES days. (Strider arcade is still awesome, though)

>> No.4930293

Agree with all.
Strider 1 was Capcom's CPS-1 in full form showing amazing set-pieces unlike any other game at the moment. Strider 2 was a 1999 game running on a hardware based on a console from 1994. Yes, the game was fine, but couldn't had the same impact.

Also, I still don't know If I prefer the new Hiryu's design. At least his redesign was better than the awful attempt of Sega with Joe Mushashi.

Are you talking about his plasma scarf? I think it was a pretty neat idea, changing colors according to the cypher type you're using.

I wasn't too sure if I'd like the design myself either but 4~5 hours into the game I can tell that they got it damn right. My only complaint is his hair for the in-game model when you get an upgrade, the close on his face makes it look like he has a bush on his head lol.

Also I never cared much for concept arts of any kind but the ones in this game are SICK

>> No.4930384

>>4930335
Mmmmm, Im not too keen on the plasma scarf idea of the newer Strider. Too futuristic for a series that started being more steampunk like

I was talking about the 1998s Hiryu redesign that was first featured in Marvel vs Capcom. Even though I like that redesign, I also love Hiryu showing his face in the first game. It even looks more badass to me that way.

>>4930142
That's nonsense. I understand saying that difficulty shouldn't be the only thing determining game quality but saying it doesn't matter is absurd. You can't divorce fun from difficulty because to many (I would argue most) easy games get boring quickly. Games are about challenge optimized for a fun experience after all.

I didn't say it was full 100% steampunk, but it has some touches like how a lot of enemies appear to be have joints or use wood like some old steampunk robots.

The point is that later games used a more cyberpunk setting, while the first game had more of a colorful science fiction and fantasy mix in the levels. There is not a single computer in the first game, but plenty of bizarre things like dinosaurs, kung fu masters, pirates, and of course, Meio who is basically a dark mage.

Controller support is completely messed up and they never bothered to fix it. I think the only one that works fine is an XBox 360 gamepad. That's something everyone's pissed off about in the community hub of the game. I remember I was trying to use my PS2 controller, but it just wouldn't recognize it properly. I think your only option in that situation is to use the JoyToKey third party program and bind everything manually, but I gave up at this point and just played Strider 2014 using the keyboard with custom binds that someone on the capcom-unity forums made(because you can't rebind those in the game either...).
It's a great game, but the PC port feels like an afterthought.

>>4930654

As far as I know, It was a joint venture between Capcom and Moto Kikaku to release like a multimedia experience about these characters and settings (mangas, games, etc). It wasn't as successful as expected, so the project kinda died in the early 90s until it was brought back in 1998.

Yep, That's why I have said 1998 (Marvel vs Capcom year), because the sequel is from 1999.

I was 11 the first time I saw a Strider arcade machine and I was shocked (but also amazed) at how violent it was: having you kill animals and people (even women) with a freaking sword, a dinosaur exploding, etc. I'm surprised the game came to America practically uncensored.

I think it's pretty obvious Strider 2 is a much darker game and more cyberpunk in its style than the first game. Could have been just a change in tastes between the decades though, as the original 80s Shinobi was also much more colorful and less "technological", but Shinobi III became full cyberpunk too in 1993.

Yes, he's right. That's why a lot of arcade games from that era have certain sounds or voice clips at a much higher level than the music or other less important sounds. It was to help you notice it from all the noise of the arcades. I remember games like Bad Dudes having voice and hit samples so high that you couldn't even hear any of the game's soundtrack.

Unfortunately that's slowly been the norm for PC games with controller support for like the last six or seven years.
