ITT: Atari2600 games which hold up

>> No.4928079

The whole point of Arkanoid/Breakout is the exact opposite of "holding up"...unless you're referring to the ball.

>> No.4928091

Activision games in general hold up very well.

Barnstorming and Stampede in particular.
Kaboom will always be a good time.

Berzerk, Pitfall II, Solaris, H.E.R.O., Stargate, Atlantis, Cosmic Ark, Spider Fighter

Kaboom! - the only reason I still have my 2600 and a couple pairs of paddles. Emulation hasn't been able to match that precision and smoothness needed to get new high scores in Kaboom!

Another term for what OP is asking is games which have aged well.

Most Activision games and about half the Atari ones. Not much else unfortunately (with exceptions, of course).

I didn't have one back in the day. The only exposure to the games of the 2600 I had through emulation. Either on the computer or some compilation on the PS2.

But of all games I really liked Pressure Cooker.

And I have the highest respect for the developers of those games. Even for 8-bit standards developing for the 2600 ought to be tough. 128 Bytes of RAM and no frame buffer whatsoever so you had to do the logic for drawing to the screen all by yourself. But just like the C64 the quirks of the 2600 hardware seemed to be very exploitable to all sorts of programming tricks, making the platform very flexible to a certain degree.

The Book "Racing the Beam" is a great read in that case.

That's the charm, they were able to do a lot more with these exploits of sorts, a lot of thinking outside the box that produced incredible results. The one thing that gets me thought was the c64 game 8-bit Guy developed, he ran out of memory and had to cut features from the game, he could have taken advantage of a few things to make the map he used take up a lot less memory, but he didn't, instead he cut features. In other words, if you're going to make a new c64 game, take advantage and make something unique that breaks the mold and is exceptional, using tricks to do more with less.

I don't count Joust since that's an inferior arcade port.

It's not that bad, not as bad as the pac-man port bad, Joust is somewhat playable on the 2600.

One of these days I need to play Space Shuttle. Hear the game is pretty insane given it's on a 2600.

Joust controls surprisingly well on the 2600 and the eggs constantly floating and not touching the ground makes it unique compared to any other port. Comparing ports and trying to find the one that has 1:1 arcade accuracy is lame, embrace the way ports to different machines changed up the game to suit different hardware and you'll have lots more fun.

>> No.4932952

I had Tomcat in my collection back in the day (probably still at my folks' place somewhere) and it's pretty impressive for a 2600 game imo.
