They can't control how 3rd party developers use the hardware. And most 3rd party developers at the time didn't want their games dependent on a controller that wasn't included with the system.

>> No.4927218

Even if the only game you ever used it for was Street Fighter 2, it was justified. That was a must have game back then.

The number of buttons never really mattered to me. These controllers simply felt more comfy than the original Genesis ones.

I've never owned an original, but I have a few hyperkin gn6 pads. Are the originals much better? These aren't bad but the plastic on the dpad feels a little stiff.

Off the top of my head:
>Ranger X
>Comix Zone
>Shinobi 3(optional and breaks the game but sooooo much fun)
....aaaaaannnnddd outside of fighters that's all I can think off. Regardless 3 buttons worked just fine 95% of the time.

It's a mode button anon. It is held at startup to make the pad into a 3 button one and preserve compatibility with those games which don't know how to communicate with a 6 button.

Great controller that helped evolve video games and every controller after it.
All controllers are the children of this controller and the SNES controller.
Check out the Hori Fighting Commander for PS.

wwf wrestling games use every button, even mode to switch out tag partner in 3v3 matches since only one can be seen by the ropes at a time.
>A = run / throw opponent into ropes
>B = punch / bodyslam
>C = kick / headbutt
>X = face rake / atomic drop
>Y = quick grapple / suplex
>Z = choke (or for special move)
>MODE = tag partner select

4 face + 2 shoulder buttons is always better since you can press 3 buttons at the same time instead of you know just one. E.g. something like Mega Man X would be impossible on the Genesis controller since you won't be able to keep charging your blaster while jumping or dashing. Hell even Super Metroid would be impossible since you need shoulder buttons for aiming diagonally.

Basically really poor design. What were they thinking, it's like a fucking keyboard.

I like the SNES controller and the shoulder buttons are great but no way would I pick it over the 6-Button gen controller when playing a fighter.

I can easily press 3,4 buttons simultaneously just fine with a 6-button Genny pad. Git gud.

Do you have 3-4 thumbs on your right hand?

This layout made sense on the arcade (see pic) since you used your whole hand, but it's a pretty stupid choice for a gamepad.

>> No.4927830

>>4927812
>implying your thumb can only hit one button at a time
Brainlet. You angle your thumb to hit B,Y,C or slide your thumb over a bit to hit B,Y,C,Z. If you need to hit the A-B-C or X-Y-Z rows you position your thumb horizontally and hit all 3.

>> No.4927840

>>4927830
I was with you until angling your thumb horizontally. That's just dumb as hell. Fortunately the Saturn controller added shoulder buttons for 3p/3k

I just play everything on stick. It's much easier from me to hit and/or hold multiple buttons that way. Shoulder dashing is necessary on a controller though. I have a friend who just double-taps on controller every time though.

>> No.4928061

>>4927307
They are miles better. Bought a Hypershit pad once and the Z button squeaks whenever you press it and the d-pad feels like it can slice your thumb open.

I might be remembering wrong but I’m fairly certain that a few 32X games did have in game functions tied to that button.

>> No.4928076

>>4928065
Oh of course but it was definitely an afterthought (or clever use of a button which would otherwise go to waste, depending on your point of view).

Point is it's not a "shoulder button" per se, that's just where Sega chose to locate it when they designed the controller.

I am a Nintendo fanboy and I can't help but agree with this.
Fucking Monolith Snes ports being slow and using tiny ass sprites while Takara's Game Boy ports were fast and fun as titfucking a lubed cheerleader.

>> No.4928123

>Hell even Super Metroid would be impossible since you need shoulder buttons for aiming diagonally.
Here's how it could work on Genesis:

A = cycle through items left
B = jump
C = cycle through items right
X = toggle running on/off
Y = shoot
Z = toggle stand-still-while-shooting on/off

>> No.4928125

>>4927169
Here, let me tell you what they were thinking: 6 buttons for Street Fighter 2, and the mode button is there for backwards compatibility: hold it down while powering on the system, and the pad will run in 3-button mode, in case some badly programmed games break with the new pad.

Shoulder buttons weren't a standard yet. And they kind of sucked before they made them triggers on the BACK of the controller instead of the top of it.

Takara's gameboy fighters were the best fighting games on the system.

their port of Toshinden (a 3d game) put the games Playstation sequels to shame.

It could work fine but that's fucking retarded why the hell would you do it that way.

some games use the mode button as an additional "action" button (Beyond Oasis, Fatal Fury 2, Etc...) so make mode diagonal aim like on GBA.
A = shoot, B = Jump,
X= weapon left, Y = Weapon Right
Z=run toggle, C = toggle stand

Like why the fuck would you set Y to shoot you retard that's dumb AF.

>Like why the fuck would you set Y to shoot you retard that's dumb AF.

So that you can keep holding down shot to charge your gun and also be able to tap the jump button. Position your thumb so that the top of it is resting on Y and the middle/lower part is resting on B.

I do speedruns of Genesis games. I personally prefer the Dpad on this controller.

I don't think the six button made sense, but it's a lot more comfortable than the original. I don't "piano" the buttons like a lot of people, though. The dpad feels really precise.

>> No.4930847

Most controller were made with only one game in mind, you can see this most clearly in the case of the N64's being designed around Mario 64

>> No.4931029

Anyone who says they don't understand why they made the 6 button controller has no idea what the fuck they're talking about. MK-MKII and SFII-SSF2 blew the fuck up in a way few games ever have since. They absolutely dominated the arcades and everyone demanded home ports ASAP. I'm talking rows of 10 machines each all packed with lines three deep. Shit went on for what felt like forever. Supporting 2-6 games with all buttons was fine because people just couldn't get enough of that bullshit.
