If you really want some /vr/ recommendations, I can give you Space Station Sillicon Valley. It doesn't take itself seriously, there's a lot of variation and free-roaming in every level(or at least most of them), the story is absurd enough that you don't mind it being simple, the controls are alright and not hard to figure out, the background music fits nicely with the atmosphere and it still looks alright for a N64 game that's around 20 years old. It also seems to be an inspiration for Nintendo's Super Mario Odyssey on the Switch, take that as you will.

>too easy
I mean at this point no Mario game is difficult to me, not even 2J, but SMW is just perfectly designed to me, it also has to do with the control mechanics and physics rather than the level design, which I still think is good though. People always talk about the cape but you can't fly in many of the levels, namely the hardest ones like castles and fortresses.
>variety of powerups
Honestly I don't think more powerups were needed. Yoshi himself can me thought as 4 extra powerups. I mean I loved tanuki and frog mario as much as the next guy, but the reason I love SMB3 is because of its overall design and controls, I didn't even use the rarer powerups much, it was always racoon mario or firey mario sometimes.
That said, I think both SMB3 and World are good contenders for best game of all time. I just give the edge to SMW. Mind you it's not nostalgia because I played 3 first. But still, 3 is damn up close.

Not OP, but these would be lazy answers. These games can only be defended with "simple and revolutionary" statements, no one would be willing to argue that Tetris has better gameplay and is more complete than everything that came out after it. It's the kind of answer a game journalist would give in order to avoid being controversial.

I sort of see what you're saying but don't agree with it. I think one of the things that makes Tetris such an incredible game is It's simplicity while still having some depth. It wouldn't and wasn't my number 1 choice, but it's certainly near the top for me (though not as high as Puyo or Panel de Pon to be fair) I could certainly understand someone else picking it as what they think is the best game.

>> No.4927687

Fair enough. I always rate SF as the quintessential fighter since it manages to stay compelling with just the bare minimum amount of mechanics. Other franchises add more layers to engage with a core audience, but they do so at the expense of intimidating newcomers.

Every game is the same, with little room for improvement. First you set up a bunch of tetrises, and then you cross your fingers for line blocks. Repeat until they're coming down so fast that you've zero time to move them.

I won't judge a lot of picks but I'll sure as shit judge this one.

>Children on the spectrum often have obsessive, repetitive behaviours. Michael loved to slide things behind him. He would take cars, puzzle pieces, anything, and just slide it behind him. Other children enjoy other ways of playing. For example, some children at the milder end of the spectrum often love stacking things, sorting them, lining toys up endlessly and very neatly. If you try to stop them from stacking/sorting/lining them up, or a sibling comes along and messes it up, they will get very upset.

No one is saying Tetris is a bad game. The point is the answer is easy and lazy. The game is so well-known that anyone can agree it's good, and it's so simplistic and perfect-by-default that you can't really critcize the mechanics.
The real interesting conversation comes from discussing the more "vulnerable" picks. The more complex the game, the higher likelyhood of having flaws, so it's more exciting to weigh those games against each other. Tetris only ever wins because of technicalities.

SH1 is way too simple for a survival horror game. Many areas have only 1 actual puzzle and over half the doors are permanently locked. Coupled with the facts you have to beat every area twice in a row, the town is huge and empty (so just space filler) and combat is even worse than in other survival horror games, and this is one of the worst "best" games around.

It gets by because "muh spoopy" and nothing more. It is the origin point of brainles spooky walking simulators (I am aware of clock tower, it has more actual gameplay, sorry) and it's FAR from the best game ever. It's not even the best in it's genre or series.
