I'd like to talk about high-fidelity shaders. What do you recommend for each platform?

For Famicom, there are many options for NTSC video simulation on top of CRT effects. The two that I looked at were GTU-Famicom, which generates a highly saturated image with noticeable cross color artifacts when paused, and the NTSC-NES shader bundled with Retroarch that generates an image that is far more dull, but could be more accurate, and also doesn't show nearly as much evidence of cross component artifacts in frozen frames, which I like. Both require the use of a raw palette. I also added an 8px overscan both horizontally and vertically.

For CRT simulation, I simply added a shader pass and selected CRT-Lottes, since it has a good reputation and curves by default, and CRT-Royale is unusable in combination with other presets without editing shaders directly. This screenshot is from the second configuration that I will be sticking with unless I can find something better. Of course the artifacts stick out in a screenshot, but in motion the image oscillates such that they are barely noticeable, and not at all from a distance, having a smoothing effect on the image and making it look less artificial.

Faking that much curve looks like poodoo when there's no real life depth. I usually just simulate composite video distortion for consoles, and LCD filters for handhelds.

How about this one? I used the Composite filter included with Mesen, original hardware palette, and Lotte Halation CRT shader. It is nicer on the colours.

I don't recommend per platform, i recommend per display and what you want.
If you have a 4K display then you can use shaders like royale but only if you know how to configure it correctly - otherwise leave it alone as it looks fucking terrible at its default settings.
If you have a 1080p display then i recommend Easymode, but reduce the horizontal sharpness, increase the gamma coz it's far too low at default, and increase the strength of the scanlines ever so slightly.

For NES and even a bit for SNES Wii composite will still look a lot cleaner since it's giving out RGB-valid colours and doing proper trap filtering on the luma to avoid colour fringing.

The fact that you need specialized (and in most places, illegal) hardware to dump the cartridge in the first place is copy protection.

It's not like you need some hardware made by Bung to do it nowadays. A Retrode is hardly something that could be argued is only suitable for illegal purposes in court.
