who the fuck is the intended audience for this series? Most of the references are to stuff that no kid at the time would recognize, but the gameplay and visuals are all aimed towards kids, and on top of all that there's a ton of corny sex jokes that only a 13 year old would find funny.

I was 12 when i picked this game up. My parents would make me and my siblings watch old tv shows, movies and such. I am the demographic for this game and i love all of them even the gb games!!!

Back in those days, it was a lot more common for kids to watch old TV series because reruns were common and they didn't have a ton of other modern stuff competing for their attention.

Kids of the mid-late 90's wouldn't recognize Looney Tunes, Star Wars, Bruce Lee, James Bond, Godzilla, Jurassic Park?

When were you born, OP?

The weirdest thing about the show was the jokes about cartoon writers and their contracts.

The fuck?

Wrong dumbass, watch the cartoon instead of parroting Cracled memes.

He's not wrong though, Animaniacs and Tiny Toons were both pretty bad about referencing pop culture stuff not intended for kids and doing tons of in jokes about the animation and film industry.

I guess Looney Tunes was kind of like that too to some extent.

Like the shows being mentioned, it is "kid friendly" but is for general audiences. This isn't uncommon, many cartoons from around this time were like this as well, such as Dexters Lab, Powerpuff Girls, and even Spongebob. You just don't notice(or care) when you're a kid.

The writers have admitted in interviews that they for the most part wrote shit that they found funny, and didn't really care if kids would find it funny, or even get the joke.

Back in the day it was typical for families to own one t.v and one only(unless you were particulary well off), so when a kid got to have some vidya time, it wasn't uncommon that your parents would be pottering about looking on at what you're playing. One of my fondest memories of Gex was when my parents actually started laughing at some of his references. I didn't get it but I didn't care, it was a nice feeling when your mum & dad got some enjoyment out of something you enjoy too.

Those were the days. Life comes at you fast. :(

You were poor if your household had only one tv in 1998.

>> No.4924786

>>4924781
to be honest it this would have been closer to 2001, so I suppose my household really was poor. Didn't feel that way to me though. Ah to be that young and naive again. Although I don't think we were that poor, I mean, I did have a Playstation.

Some people are just frugal and won't buy duplicates or replace things that aren't broken, and some have an odd way of thinking that views a tv as a super expensive permanent fixture. My mom was paying $1000+/year for cable to a standard definition tube until just a few years ago.

My parents let me bring their bedroom tv into the basement when I got a playstation so I wouldn't hog the one in the living room.

13 inch sony with a terrible mono speaker god what a piece of shit that thing was for playing games.

This. Hell, my family WAS poor living in a shitty apartment in the late 80s but even my dad got my sister and I our own used TV for our bedroom with our own cable box.

LOL, funny thing was, when you ordered pay channels, like the Playboy channel, it would go to ALL the boxes in the house, as it was analog signals and there was no way to determine which box got which channel, so we got to see plenty of softcore porn until my parents figured it out and just cancelled the channel and my dad just rented porn videos instead.

The ‘Frozen Peas’ Pinky and the Brain segment still amazes me. Not only does the audience have to be familiar with Orson Welles in general, they have to specifically know about those commercial outtakes. The 90s had a really short golden age where writers/producers of children’s entertainment really gave a fuck.
