Talk about it.

It's a B tier Link to the Past clone. Not a bad game overall, but it does have a b8it of an inflated price tag thanks to the Atlus logo.

More games should've used its 'platform game but from top down' sensibilities. Also bizarrely the composer did no other videogames, which sucks cus the music kicks ass.

I haven't bought a Nintendo console since the N64 (and I guess, GBA). Crusader of Centy is an obvious Link to the Past clone. Some of the sprites and tiles look like they were ripped right out of the SNES game. The game itself is pretty fun, but it is a short adventure (you can speed run it in like 2 hours or less) game and not one of the most memorable ones. The animal play mechanics are neat, I guess. The boss battles are also better than anything found in Link to the Past too.

And I do think the game sells for ridiculous prices, thanks to the Atlus logo.

>What sequel?

There was never a real sequel to this game. The closest thing Crusader of Centy ever had to a sequel is Linkle LIver Story on the Sega Saturn:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQOJmEDH7KM

Which is also an action RPG developed by NextTech, who also made Centy. Linkle Liver has similar gameplay mechanics to Crusader of Centy, but it is not a sequel.

Also, Linkle Liver has the misfortune of an engrish title. Clearly the game was meant to be called Rinkle River Story, but the Japanese developers got their 'L's" and 'R's" mixed up again, which is very common, and they ended up with this bizarre title.

One of the most memorable aRPGs I've ever played. Gorgeous graphics, fun/fast paced gameplay and a story with clear thematic content. Not to mention 8-way movement. I've played A Link to the Past many, many times and it's one of my favorite games. But if I had to be honest, I'd pick Crusader of Centy over A Link to the Past any day of the week.

Of course Nintendo didn't invent the top down action RPG. But Crusade of Centy still copied a lot of things specifically from A Link to the Past. There were lots of magazines reviews and previews noting the similarities. Crusader of Centy was generally known as a LTTP clone. I don;t think the developers tried to hide that.

>Which ones?
House interiors, exteriors, outdoor tiles, aesthetically it looked very similar to LTTP.

Reviewers have also called Ys a Zelda clone. Which is completely wrong. What's your point?

It's a great game. It starts out like this cutesy kiddy zelda ripoff but it's actually much deeper than that if you actually play it.
Also this is important - play the PAL version "Soleil" though as it has a different translation to the US version. It's less censored, has less typos and scripting errors, less name changes (Atlus changed heaps of shit in the US version) and is just a more accurate translation overall. Don't worry, you can play it in 60hz in an emulator, just switch regions after the game has booted.

>Why Crusader of Centy is being dimissed as alttp clone while you don't see the original zelda being compared to Hydlide?

It was dismissed as a Link to the Past clone upon release by just about every gaming magazine that reviewed it.

Crusader of Centy was released like 3 years after Zelda Link to the Past on the SNES, and the console never had a direct counterpart. Sure it has ARPG's like Land Stalker and Beyond Oasis. But Beyond Oasis is more of an Action RPG beat-em-up (somewhat like Streets of Rage, given the developer) and LandStalker is in an isometric viewpoint and plays quite a bit different. Crusader of Centy was directly inspired by LTTP visually and gameplay wise as well. The main character has a sword throwing attack very similar to Link's shooting sword. The character has a similar move set to Link when gaining new abilities. The colourful graphics and tiles are heavily inspired too.

Granted, Crusader of Centy is a much more linear game, it does focus a bit more on platforming and the items collected aren't all required to be used for advancing through the game like Zelda.

Back then, this game was generally looked at as the Genesis alternative to LTTP.

B7 OLED + OSSC. For 240p it kind of feels like having a giant broadcast monitor.

Pretty neat game but a bit tricky to tell what to do next sometimes. I have to race a cheetah now and it doesn't seem to be very forgiving.

I'm joking! Sonic was a mix of classic Sega arcade design philosophies and pinball. There is a reason why Sonic had a lot of clones.

In many ways Crusader of Centy does copy

from LTTP, but it still deviates far enough to not end up in lawsuit land. Crusader of Centy is a short game, but it does get better after the training section. The training area was a little pointless, but once you get past it the game is pretty good. It does have interesting platforming moments (as seen in the webm avove) and the bosses are way more fun than anything in Link to the Past, to be honest. This is a pretty fun game to speed run too, as it can be finished in under 1:30 or something. It's not Link to the Past in size and scope. But it has a fun little story.

It's the only other genesis game that's expensive because of how rare it is, the other being MUSHA. Because of how heavily skewed towards Nintendo pop culture is, no amount of *funny voices* or *loud screaming* that modern let's players do these days will make Genesis games ever valuable.

The story left a bad taste in my mouth when I finally replayed it years after I got older but I still find it very fun to play and enjoy how I can beat the whole thing within one afternoon. Thanks anon. I bought it to replace an HD CRT for modern content but ended up pairing it with an OSSC so I could use it for classic stuff too. And since then for some reason I've mostly been using it for Sega Genesis and 80s/90s anime.

I really enjoy 240p on it but I'm not a fan of 480i. The OSSC deinterlace method for 480i creates an eye-melting shimmer effect. It's also the only thing I miss the HD CRT for. The 200 pound POS was too laggy for classic games and could only play newer stuff in 1080i but it could perform miracles on 480i content.

The ending made me kind of melancholy. The guy goes on this huge adventure, sends monsters back to their own world or whatever, saves the world and changes the past. He's this hero who has done so much, and nobody will ever know, because he goes to a past where the things he did never really happened.
