i had mario teaches typing and no, i was more interested in what mario was doing than actual learning. im not bad at typing but its mostly because ive been doing it for 25 years rather than actual technique

No, I got good enough to beat ASDF JKL; scum just from typing on message boards and playing games.

Not even the slightest. This is what I got busy with when I was like four.

>>4918938
I can hit ~95 and I type like a pianist moving his hands around often enough and not even staying on the home row. But, eh home key typers are still faster. The fastest of them generally sit around 150--200WPM. Dvorak fastest typers are like 200-230. 100WPM is 66% of a slower fast typist.

I'm fine with typing just a tad slower than you myself, but let's not pretend we couldn't be potentially that much faster if learned to type properly.

>> No.4919105

I don't properly 10-finger because I like to have stretching integrated into my typing. It feels icky not having my fingers travel. Can still type blind faster than most.

Yes.
But that was because typing class was a mandatory daily class when I was in 2nd grade. I left that year able to type and typing only got better since then with practice. In highschool we had another basic life-skills shit type class, how to build a resume, how to look for a job, shit like that, and typing was there. I was, and still am, amazed at how bad some people are at typing. Here's a question for you "home row is a lie" types in this thread. Do you guys have to look down and see what you're typing to type correctly? Genuinely curious. That's another thing I get surprised at. Stupid "type *insert bullshit here* without looking at your keyboard" posts only to find everybody types garbage.
10-Key though I had to learn on my own at work. I ended up with a job where it was about 90% typing numbers and we had very strict requirements. Learned that shit real quick because I didn't want to get fired.

I didn't even try during typing lessons because there was no height adjustment for the chair or keyboard. I had a PC at home since 1992 so I didn't need to learn there.

honestly I'm not sure if I could.
I tried learning the home row several times at a young age and it just felt cramped and I could never get the hang of using my pinky and ring finger to type letters. With the way I type, I use the ring finger for enter and backspace, and my pinky for ctrl and shift.
I actually only use 2 fingers on each hand to type the letters, and get about 105 wpm consistantly. I just dont have the ring/pinky finger coordination that it requires, which I've noticed when playing instruments as well

Everything I learned about typing I learned from instant messaging people, posting on forums, and chatting in video games. One time in junior high I had a teacher who was slow as shit at typing tell me I was typing wrong because I wasn't keeping my fingers on the home row, still makes me mad to this day.

The nonsense letter typing in the first few stages of Mavis Beacon and other typing programs put me off so hard as a kid I became a worse typer than I would have been otherwise. Eventually I learned to touch type by shotposting.

This. The best typing habits are learned while arguing on the internet, preferably while drunk. The downside is you will develop horrible grammar habits.

>> No.4920510

>Typing games
Shit like this was always slow paced and it wasn't until long after mandatory typing classes that I learned how to touch type on my own. Worst typing class was 6th grade typing class with microtype, where the teacher was a huge cunt and forced everyone to put a rubber keyboard cover on our keyboards so "You can learn not to look at the keys", a valuable skill, though lots of us were still very much typing novices, so all of us were confused as fuck and made many errors... also of course those that were ahead got special treatment and got to either take that shit off or have the virtual keyboard up on screen... some of us literally got through that shit faster with a mouse and the Virtual keyboard.
Hate to talk about bad typing class memories, but then again, I think we all have some weird ass typing class memories

She was a made up character who was supposedly a champion typist, much like the Chess master from Mindscape's other title. In reality, she was some foreign person they photographed for the first game and for the next couple of games, it was generic black ladies. In other words, Mavis Beacon isn't a real person.

Nah. The idea of "home keys" is a myth that needs to die a horrible death. You get faster at typing with practical experience, and the best form of training comes from dictation since you never know what's coming up next. People need to learn that the individual needs of the typist need to be realized and conformed to. For instance, I have fairly small hands so I need to use my pinky to hit the shift key.

>Do you guys have to look down and see what you're typing to type correctly? Genuinely curious
No, I just put my thumb on the keyboard and I know exactly where everything is. In fact, this keyboard is an old mechanical one and the letters have worn away, making it unusable to anyone who has not memorized the layout.

No but playing team fortress back in the day did. You either typed fast or got dead.

Dialup sucked. I remember sniping and you had to lead your target by like 3 or 4 seconds ahead to hit them. You would shoot like 15 feet in front of them for it to hit a moving target.
