Oh geez...all of them? Most of them, at least. I've always been a fan of JRPGs.

If I had to list a few in no particular order:
Suikoden 2
Final Fantasy 6/7/8/10/12 (crucify me)
Final Fantasy Tactics PS1 and Advance
Breath of Fire 2/3/4
Lufia 2
Lunar 1/2
Grandia 1/2
Koudelka
Arc the Lad 3
Dragon Warrior 7/8 (haven't played others)
Jade Cocoon
Legend of Dragoon
Legend of Legaia
Not sure if Legend of Mana counts as JRPG but I liked it
Secret of Mana
Star Ocean 2nd Story
Wild Arms 1/2/3
Xenogears
Vagrant Story

That's off the top of my head. I know I'm an uncultured faggot but I plays what I likes.

I don't think every game is for every person. Some games might be loved by some, and disliked by others. I think it has to do with how your "taste" has evolved over the course of your life.

One should also be at the "right state" mentally to be able to absorb and enjoy a game. e.g. Don't start a story heavy game if you don't feel like reading and investing in the story/characters. Come back to it later.

Having said that, I am not going to recommend a popular one like FF8 (which is a masterpiece in every way, and it has SOUL, if you disagree get out of my face )

I am going to recommend
>Lost Odyssey
I heart this game so much. It's a nice tragic story, great memorable music. Nice combat, and more importantly the game has SOUL. So try it out.

What a weird list. Phantasia is miles ahead of the other Tales games (although Vesperia and Graces f are both pretty good). Skies of Arcadia is the best JRPG though, no other game has satisfied me in the same way.

I've heard many people say that they don't need a girl because they've got their 2D waifus, their sex robots, or whatever else they claim is superior, but what they all have in common is that they've never actually experienced being together with a woman. So, although you may be satisfied with how your life is now, it may still be better once you play Earthbound. It may not be the best JRPG but it's a relatively unique experience none the less.

I met Jason Schreier some years ago. He was tiny, like 5'1" or something, and really pale and clammy. There was sweat all over his body. He looked someone with the flu, except he didn't have it and that's just how he always looked. He talked in this horrid nasally, lispy voice, but also had all these neurotic Jewish vocal ticks; that, "hrnnn" noise they sometimes make after completing a sentence. Really bizarre. There was a woman with him who looked deeply uncomfortable.

That's my Jason Schreier story. Hope you guys like it.

As much as I adore the game, is it objectively one of the must-play JRPGs (leaving aside that it's an ARPG, since Secret of Mana and Tales etc. had also been mentioned)?
The story and setting are very unique at least in the first half.
I was going to say "if you don't love the story and leave it out of your assessment of the game, your verdict might be 'no'", but I guess that must be true for at least some of the other games mentioned here.
Either way, I wish the game was simply more well-known. It not being released in the US hurt its recognition, internet or no.

True JRPGs only - no pseudo, "pretty-close-to" JRPGs.

(SNES)
FFIV, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Lufia II, Terranigma, Earthbound, Breath of Fire (I & II)

(PSX)
FFVII, FFVIII, Xenogears, Suikoden (I & II), Alundra

The above are, IMO, "can not miss" classic JRPGs. You might consider some better than others, or some have flaws you don't like, but overall these are giants.

When I think of the "golden age" of JRPGs, I think of these two systems, pretty much exclusively.

Of course, other RPG-esque games exist, for these and other platforms, but I think that this list speaks for itself.

>"Why isn't FFIX on the list?"
Because it's alright, not 'the best'.
>"Why isn't FFT on the list?"
Because it's not a true JRPG. It's also slow & grindy.
>"Why isn't XXX on the list?"
Because I personally don't consider them 'the best'. Make your own list if you disagree.

>some form of overly-cute animals (e.g. moogles, chocobos, cat hybrids, etc)
>over-arching "good vs evil" theme; no ambiguous heroes or villians
>redemptive story archs
>Made by a software company in Japan, by Japanese programmers

Just off the top of my head.

>>4914934

For me, Pokemon is difficult to classify as a JRPG. If I class Pokemon as a JRPG, I must also class Harvest Moon as a JRPG & that is a bridge too far, IMO.

Then again, having avatars fight for the protagonist(s) is not new: Shin Megumi Tensai is a very well-known JRPG (pure, people might say).

Perhaps it's just me being stubborn. I will admit that the 2nd generation of Pokemon games had far more fleshed-out JRPG elements, but in the original Blue/Red/Yellow, I feel that they're more adventure games. Beginning and an end, some problems along the way, but JRPG? IDK.

I still think that the most pure example of a JRPG would be the Final Fantasy series; they're iconic & influenced the entire industry, to the point that other JRPGs felt like imitations.

I'm sure if I typed "is Pokemon a JRPG" in Google, I'd get a lot of hits, I feel.

....tl;dr? Probably.

>> No.4914962

>>4914934
Bizarrely, most of the Final Fantasy games also don't meet his criteria because they don't feature turn-based combat due to the ATB system.

Fact is that it's hard to define 'JRPG'. The term means more than just 'Japanese RPG' but its elements aren't amazingly clearly defined. You recognize one when you see it, though, but there's a lot of room for leeway.

>> No.4914982

>>4914962

Yes, it's actually frustrating, because I think there are games that are clearly JRPGs (Dragon Quest), others that are just RPGs (Ultima), then there are RTS RPGs (Diablo) and adventure RPGs (A Link to the Past, River City Ransom), and RPG-esque games made in Japan (Shenmue).

Every rpg is the same, contrived story, time wasting mechanics, 50+ hours of your life gone. Next month you will probably not even remember most of the story and will probably never play it again because RPGs are barely playable since they focus so heavily on the """""rpg experience"""""""""""" and huge time investments instead of engaging gameplay

"muh pokemon"

Pokemon is one of the worst RPGs ever made, the core mechanic is literally level grinding, it's only good because you were 10 years old watching the cartoon and there were a bunch of funny looking creatures

Here's the deal folks, if anyone in this thread has listed any of these then you have yet to put on your big boy pants. They might have been fun when you were 9 years old but it's time to be an adult now and re-examine games you once loved with an adult and critical mind. It's ok to admit things you once loved are actually shitty. It helps you appreciate new games even more and makes you a better person.
The sad thing is i know they are listed by multiple people in this thread, and i haven't even read it.

Xenogears - Unfinished clusterfuck.
Suikoden 2 - Embarassing Shounen trash, terrible music... i mean really really awful stuff, rubbish level design, full of bugs and glitches, unfinished translation (some conversations look like this "*(&U()(*@JJ*^&*&%)". But hey the sprites are alright aren't they?
Breath of Fire series - B grade, generic to the core and incredibly poorly written. Capcom and Konami needed to stick to what they knew - really cool action games with no plot.
Any of the Mana games - Incredible music and graphics but shit level design and combat and writing. Collision detection in boss battles is non existent. Don't try and present me an action real time game when it's not and i can take damage from the other side of the screen when it's the enemy's turn to attack.
Legend of Dragoon - Pathetic attempt to cash in on FF7's popularity, everyone even magazines could see this upon release, why can't you see it today? are you still 9 years old? It's coz you haven't played it in 20 years isn't it - go on you can admit it.
Golden Sun series - more silly shounen crap but it looks really nice.

You should probably play these ones at least:
Chrono Trigger
Panzer Saga
Mother 3 (way better than earthbound)
Earlier gamearts stuff like Lunar and Grandia 1
Vagrant Story
Skies of Arcadia
Paper Marios
Probably one of those Tales games, Symphonia or Vesperia (ps3)

PS - Terranigma is incredibly overrated. It's a 7/10 at best, Quintet have done far better.

Played a couple of hours of Albert Odyssey. So far it is VERY boring and the RE rate is pretty high. Will it ever become better or I can skip it and nothing of value will be lost?

Seriously? Damn shame if so. Honestly, it's one of my favourite RPGs. I try to squeeze in two playthroughs (Rue and Mint) at least once a year.

Why RPG's fans have to deal with an eternal (literally since the 90's) and nauseating debate about what's an RPG and what's not. You don't see shmup or racing games fans arguing about any stupid game being a true something or whatever.

>> No.4924910

racing games
>you race

shmup
>you shoot em up

RPG
>you role-play?

no one can seem to find a definition on role-playing since it's such a vague and easily twisted term, as opposed to virtually anything else, so no shit there's going to be debates

It's a sub-genre of strategy. Most RPGs are tactical squad-based games, and even those that aren't put an emphasis on decision making elsewhere like dialogue choices or divergent quests. You could really chuck out the term RPG altogether. I prefer to categorize games into one or more of the following:
>Action
physical challenge
>Adventure
exploration
>Strategy
decision-making

And further analyze them from there. All games fall into those categories. For example, Racing and Shmup would be action games. Sub-Genres are largely buzzwords for marketing and if you start deconstructing games to take a really good objective look at them you will find they are useless for actual categorization.

nothing wrong with the kotaku list and this site makes money too.
It's pretty much a stupid list anyway: nobody in this whole thread has even alluded to the ps2 remake of phantasy star.

I haven't played all of them but it's mostly Zelda-like games, then Metroid (it's own genre too), and Secret of Mana as the only RPG?

Because the genre was poorly thought out and implemented from its inception. It tried to recreate some elements of tabletop roleplaying in games by adapting the systems that only exist to simulate things that all games already do in their code. From the beginning it was this confused attempt to mix two different mediums without caring about the strengths of each, that's why you have people with such vastly different ideas of what makes an RPG. Above you see an anon considering them a subset of strategy games which is perfectly valid if you look at their mechanics by themselves. Others put more value on what those mechanics are attempting to be in service of - the roleplaying, and base their idea of what the genre is on that. Others are even more confused as a result of what I talked about and think roleplaying in games doesn't exist without stats.

You just need to see what the vast majority of games labeled as RPG's have in common, and there's your definition. Problem is people consider "RPG" as some sort of quality elitist concept and not a genre, so they try to exclude 95% of RPG's from their definition so they can keep thinking to be smarter for playing some particular sub-genre.
