Why did retro games had such detailed bathrooms?
Like in all retro games mirrors had reflections, you could flush the toilet, turn showers on, etc.

Now in modern games you rarely have reflection in the mirrors.

Here is exmaples of SOME good bathrooms.

so absolutely no excuse to go back.
Modern games need to keep same level of interactivity and add more.

Mostly i care about showers and bathrooms.
Though horror games actually never forget to implement a bathroom in to a game

No, i always wait for reviews first and specifically check for bathroom/washroom interactivity level.

I don't want to play hours in to the game to find out you can't even flush the toilet.

As an example here is a list of games that actually passed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5uTe3y44Gk

But i want to make a retro list, of all the best retro bathrooms.
Talking Deus Ex, Duke Nukem, Half Life, and more. And it's pisses me of that good modern games a so hard to find.

I mean, that's because it's important for the gameplay. Bathrooms are always best places to kill people, stash the body and take their clothes. That's also why side alleys with dumpsters are also extremely detailed in Hitman games.

To render a reflection the system literally has to render everything in view of the mirror twice. so if it's rendering a guy, if there's a mirror it has to render that guy twice. Scale that up to a big complicated game and it gets expensive quickly.

>> No.4912143

>>4912123
desu since static meshes where implemented, instancing the same model is not memory expensive, also, actual reflections are made with shaders, it's a post process effect and they are no to gpu expensive depending if the algorithm
yet, they are not used

I never even thought how complicated can a mirror be in a video game.

I actually have a new level of respect for games with working mirrors. And of course, functional toilets.

>> No.4912205

>>4911596
coding reflections successfully was a way devs willy waved to game journos during the gfx wars

its actually quite hard to program reflections.

in duke 3d build if you put a mirror facing a mirror you get all sorts of problems from what i vaguely remember from being a kid.

some devs cheat and make a mirror room with a mirror NPC moving when you move exactly giving the illusion of a reflection but infact its just a copy of your player you see, this is how the ps2 silent hill did it.

doing this used much less resources

also in sonic R the loading screen had the shiny metal sonic head they put that in soley cause they could they even came up with a new technique in coding just to pull it off.

now though? most games just leave a frosted effect on the glass and dont bother coding reflections, cause everything in games looks nice now so its not worth the effort.

not true, modern horror games just model the bathroom like every other room, just with a commode/shower and mirror. no interactibles
outlast 2 didn't have them. res evil 7 didn't have any interaction. evil within 2 didn't have any interaction either
compare that to silent hill P.T. where the commode even had a jump scare and the sink had an interaction element
hell even fucking prey doesn't let you do anything in the bathroom and neither does fallout.
