The pad in OP was the original North American default Saturn pad. The pad you are showing is the original Japanese Saturn pad.

I generally think that the NA Saturn pad wasn't that bad at all. But I do agree with the spongy shoulder buttons.

Basically, you would use the numerical keypad to call up The Atari service department and ask them how it works.

The original 5200 controller also had the buttons and number pad. The reason why the track ball controller has two sets of controls is for left and right handed players.

The trackball works like an upside down old school ball mouse. There were quite a few arcade machines in the past that used them for precision controls.
