Does anyone here know anything about Nintendo's monopoly in the 1990s? Is it true that they punished any publisher who dare releasing games for the Turbografx, or that the 3DO was created as a mean to prevent Nintendo's monopoly on console (I read this from a Polygon interview of Trip Hawkins.)

Nintendo would only grant a limited number of licenses to third-party developers. I would hardly call that a monopoly.

did you know Hiroshi Yamauchi wasn't actually a human being? He was a vessel that enclosed 7 yakuza oni spirits from 7 different regions in Japan. These oni monopolized the gambling in Japan with the hanafuda Nintendo cards and put a spell so that no other company could produce cards, truly evil.

Yamauchi, often referred to as "大魔王 ティラノ天堂" (Great Evil King Tyranotendo), tyranized the video games market with his monopolic practises, it is said that the Master System or the PC Engine didn't actually ever exist, and that they were invented time after so hide the fact that the Famicom was actually the one and only console existing in Japan.

galactic pinball, one of the funnest pinball vidya I've played. Although it's not really a ball, more like a sliding disc, which makes it even better.

Isn't one of Nintendo's shticks between the NES and the N64 was strict quality-control to third-party games in order to avoid another E.T?

>> No.4910870

>>4910859
Not really. There were a ton of crappy licensed movie and TV games on the NES, SNES and Game Boy.

>Nintendo's monopoly in the decade that began with the fiercest video game console competition there ever was or ever will be again and ended with the absolute trouncing of all existing console manufacturers by big business, ushering in the modern era of video gaming
Thank God for the fucking 3DO!

Trip's probably trying to take credit for demonstrating that a relatively simple CD based console produced by major corporations could be competitive. Who's to say if Sony would or wouldn't have gone ahead with the Playstation without Trip's sacrificial lamb revealing many of the pitfalls first.

If that were true, then the NES wouldn't have been plagued by tons of shitty shovelware.

Partially. They only allowed a limited number of games to be released by each publisher per year to stop the truckloads of shovelware that plagued the 8bit home computers and Atari 2600. And the seal of quality prevented outright broken games, but even still they did authorise plainly bad games made in a hurry.

The limiting of games for3rd party devs isnt really a monopoly. But they were the direct distributor of NES cartridges and if you released your game on another platform, Nintendo would threaten to cut down how many games they'd produce. Since Nintendo had such a large market share it was too risky for publishers to attempt to release games on other platforms for a while.

I somewhat recall Trip Hawkins saying that about the 3DO. That's interesting seeing as when he was at EA they backwards engineered the Genesis and threatened to exclusively make their own cartridges unless Sega was willing to share more profits since they too exclusively produced the cartridges for the platform.

It's also one of my all time favorite games. It's a shame how many people write it off without giving it a chance because "Virutal Boy sucks cause of AVGN" or "It's just pinball".

Didn't AVGN even say that many of the games aren't even bad at all, just that he disliked the way you view the games, and that the virtual reality gimmick is usually wasted or just token?

I haven't seen that vid in years but that's pretty much what he says about every console he reviews: they're good games, just wasted on a piece of shit hardware
