Menzo was mediocrity incarnate. It was a bunch of incredibly average dungeon crawling, and the story is almost non-existent. It's like they totally forgot about it until the last minute, and shoe-horned that half-assed plot about that helmet into the last two levels. Look, I'm not expecting some grand epic story out of a dungeon-crawler, but Menzo makes EotB look like the fucking ILIAD.

I'll never understand the meme that is Gold Box. It's so needlessly convoluted that it was literally unplayable until the companion app existed. Sorry but that old-school first-person perspective only works for dungeon crawlers, trying to make it work for town-based adventures just doesn't work.

Embarassed to say I learned about this game this year. Played it and it was honestly great, probably the first CRPG to have multiple quest solutions, choices impacting the endgame battle and primitive puzzles with items akin to Runescape that were kinda easy but still kinda entertaining.

Honestly a great game, not even mad that I got stuck on the last phase of the final battle because my party was underlevelled + I failed big time for not having a SINGLE fully multiclassed char, my main dmg dealer was not even dual classed.

the computer game doesn't catch that feeling though
being able to generate real fucking superheroes by DnD standards at the start makes pretty much all battles easy, except for the final one

that's my only complaint. it's good game design to let the player learn how to defeat new threats as the game progresses, but dark sun doesn't do that (at least how I remember, my only playthrough was around 2010).
You go through the game using the same strategy over and over, and then BOOM! now you have to fight a literal army. It was at that time that I learned the hard way that 1st level Wall of Fog is the most useful spell in the game =)

But, yeah, dark sun was really a fun a experience, and felt surprisingly innovative for its time. Feels like your playing a turn-based BG

Strahd's possession had a THIRTEEN button sequence with 0 clues, that you had to press in exactly the right order to progress. And they were fucking tiny, almost impossible to spot. >> No.4912504

Any game using D&D mechanics can't by definition be good because D&D game mechanics are inherently dog shit. Lots of world building/lore (some also shit, some also interesting and okay). Most D&D games stay away from basically all the good shit in the entire game and stick to the shlup shit and tack on generic powa fantasy writing. That being said, Dark Sun takes place in one of the better campaign settings. So that alone puts it above every faerun game pretty much.

>>4911963
That list is utter dogshit. For fuck sake. You have EYE as not shit. You have Diablo as better than TL2. NWN2 greater than NWN1. KOTOR as decent and not higher than KOTOR2

It's like you forgot to actually play the fucking games. The gameplay, mechanics, bugginess, etc... make those examples basically null and fucking void. You might be whoring down fucking terrible stories and jerking off to how much it favors your fucking furry knight-kin self but no. As games those games are fucking terrible.

I mean, you can win the game without one, but you're definitely playing with a handicap. And part of the problem is that the game has this bizarre method of detecting the capabilities of your party. You won't get prompts for thief abilities unless the thief is either your party leader or you're playing with a collapsed party, which you have to dig out of the options menu.

But they can do things like grab shit from NPCs you are talking to or climb up ledges that you can't ordinarily get through as a shortcut through areas.

Nox isnt even an RPG, you cumnugget. It's an action/adventure
You have no influence on your character (or really, pretty much anything) whatsoever - unless you run away from pretty much all combat you are guaranteed to be the exact level developers wanted you to be at points they wanted you to.
And no, inventory and items are not really RPG elements either, or Zelda would've been one.

Nox is a good action game, but even if you consider it an RPG through some ridiculous leaps of logic, it would be shit as an RPG regardless.

When it came out stupid game journos for some reason equated it to Diablo, even though the only thing they have in common is isometric perspective, and then labeled it as RPG because Diablo was considered one.
