Almost all games are replayable. The question is how long does it take before it's enjoyable again?
The really good classics that you love are way better if you wait 5 years, and 10 is even better.

You replay to get better, or if it's a story game, to remember what the fuck happened so I can play the sequel.

Today I finally managed to 1cc Castlevania 1, I'm pretty happy about it. It's not terribly difficult or anything, I just couldn't consistently kill Drac so I'd fuck up. I'll probably keep playing until I reach the final checkpoint without dying, and then I'll move on to improving my result in other games.

I genuinely can't replay games, every subsequent playthrough cheapens the game experience for me. The only games I can play more than once are arcade games. I seriously don't know what's wrong with me, I'm a zoomer but it's not an attention thing - I just cannot find the fun in playing through a game I've already beaten. I think that's why I like Sega so much.

You probably didn't see everything there is to see in the game on the first playthrough. If you enjoy the gameplay of game, how it feels to control and the strategy behind it, then you can come back to it again and again. Replay value can mean a lot of things.
For me, it's when a game has variability of some kind. Multiple characters, modes, paths and endings. Unlockables, different set ups or other forms of customization. Optional side shit and missables. All that kind of shit.

Modern games are generally either ultra linear, or designed so you get everything done in one go. So modern gamers don't understand replay value.

There's also the factor that back in my day (yes yes... boomer blah, blah, blah) you'd usually have a console and like 5 games max. Unless you were lucky or were old enough to make your own money. So you'd beat those 5 fucking games a million times each.

Kids these days can emulate everything, feel the need to try and play it all, and feel no need to ever replay anything.
Also leading to them having no standards or genuine taste, but I digress...

Replay value is a relic of the past, sadly. But so am I, so fuck you you fucking millenial asshole.

Playing games is a replacement for exhibiting effort and challenge in real life. Some people have to struggle through a bunch of shit in their daily existence and mainly devote their free time to mindless relaxation. They don't want or need frustration from a video-game as well.

When you look at heavy gamers, it's often these people grew up in a comfortable suburban home. They thrive on difficult games and hardcore genres like shmups and classic platformers. I'm not pretending I'm different, actually I was very spoiled as a kid and had everything handed on a plate for me. Which is exactly why hardcore games are fulfilling, because human beings want challenge and frustration in some form, and simulating it in a video game is preferable to being dirt poor and struggling to survive, or fight in a war or something.

>> No.4908362

>>4900318
>why replay games?
Because new games are service/license model mandatory multiplayer bullshit and fuck that shit right up the ass with an ICBM.

Because returning to a familiar story makes you feel comfortable and in control despite the fact that the world is going to hell in a Chinese dollar store off-brand handbasket.

>what are some games with good replay value?
Ones with multiple endings
Ones with New Game +
Ones that are fun
Ones with waifus
Ones you like.
Ones that unlock new characters after you've beaten the game with the others

Replay value is subjective. It's what games YOU like to play more than once.

This. I enjoy surviving as a female in a dangerous world and imagining everything is trying to rape me because I was spoiled by being a male and thus not getting the dangers of being raped. Thank you for solving an issue that has been plaguing me for years, I could never play games where I wasn't the female protagonist for this reason. I'm a heavy gamer. While I've got some advantages. Urban home. Low income lifestyle from moderate income parents. Sixteen years of mental and physical abuse. I was handed just enough to keep my busy and nothing else. Now dirt poor.

I don't want frustration from my games. That's actually the opposite. Challenge is fine though.

Games are the same thing as music, art, television, writing, reading etc... It's another medium of experience. It's enjoyable. I preferred more challenging games for the immersion even while I was challenged by schoolwork and the like. It's like having a drink or smoking some pot - gives your head something to clear away the problems and relax and not think about shit for a while. Non-challenging games don't keep your mind wandering back to the shit you're trying to take a break from. Great for helping with studying etc... Often times I'd spend a straight our reading or doing problems and can't read or get stuck on a problem. Play a game, come back and I'm clear to read or bam seconds flat to the solution to a problem that I could have spent the whole hour struggling with.

Frustration is the opposite of what I want because that's generally bad or unneeded shit. It's the sort of thing that makes games bad. Like replaying entire fucking worlds/levels on death that easy as fuck and don't train you for the one hard part. Things that are broken like wrong hitboxes. Those aren't good. Those kill immersion and fuck with gameplay.

Im not the same anon, but i play new games all the time. Doesnt mean i dont go play daggerfall as well. Most of the /vr/ games i play now are new to me. Just got into saturn collecting and japanese imports of famicom and super famicom. Not to mention all the japanese ps1 and saturn games we never saw over seas. Id rather play all these quirky fun titles that still feel fresh. Fuck all these new games, they are all resident evil 4 mechanic clones or generic fps/sandbox games. Even zelda is now a generic sandbox game, so is mario though. Why the fuck does every AAA title have to feel like youre watching the next shitty "marvel super hero blockbuster" Movie!?!?

Resident Evil 3 has randomised elements, items and enemy placements are different with each playthrough. You are also occasionally presented with one-time-only choices with specific outcomes, so multiple playthroughs would be needed to experience all of them.
