I'm gonna mention Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, as it was literally designed as an entry-level rpg. Unless you feel it insults your intelligence too badly, because it is quite dumbed down compared to typical entries in the genre.

>> No.4900185

If you want something super easy that explains the mechanics upfront, the Mario and Pokemon RPGs are a good start. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, EarthBound and Chrono Trigger are other good starts. And this is just JRPGs. I have too little experience with WRPGs to be of any help, but there's a lot of good ones too.

This unironically.

Ff7 i guess if you cant stomach the old graphics.

Western Rpgs and jap rpgs are totally different btw. Its good to experience both

But nothing..nothing compares to being swept up in a good JRPG. So much soul.

DS version has better translation, the PS1 cutscenes (you can turn them off if you don't want them) added dungeons, and an extra ending.

>> No.4901526

>>4901505
Steam version had a terrible graphics filter that's since been removed, but I think it still has the trashy phone UI.
SNES version is fine, the DS one has extra content which is usually considered not so great (partly for story reasons and tie-ins to Chrono Cross, which you'll have no opinions on, partly because one of the bonus dungeons apparently involves running up and down a mountain twenty times - serious fun). You can do without the latter.
Just avoid the PS1 version, it's bad. Horrible load times.

In some ways those high-tier gold box SSI games have aged really well, particularly the combat mechanics. But the interface can be very tedious and I find the fonts to be ugly.

They're also from the era of game manuals. In fact I think some of them even reference journal entries in the printed manual and such instead of making the text available in-game.

Just want to say, as someone who has played every Final Fantasy from 1-9 except for 8, I would definitely NOT start with 9. It's a very slow game and has a lot of flaws that series fans tend to overlook.

Chrono Trigger for japanese RPGs.

Everything about this game is amazing. The soundtrack is one of the greatest of all time, the story is good, every single character is memorable, the battle system is fun and fast paced, there's little to no grinding, a fuckton of replayability. Even Toriyama's character design is somehow better in this than in every single Dragon Quest game.

The one drawback I can give to Chrono Trigger is that it is perhaps TOO good and not fully representative of the genre; most retro jRPGs will be considerably longer, filled with random battles and require a lot more grinding.

Fallout 1 for western RPGs.

This was the first cRPG I played. I was a console gamer for most of my life and downloaded Fallout 1 from GOG on a whim back in 2009. It blew my fucking mind. This is maybe the closest the industry has ever been to replicating a true tabletop experience. The combat isn't that great, but the world feels so alive and organic and actually reacting to your character's actions and decisions.

Fallout 2 is bigger but not better, I think.
