I really don’t think piracy was a huge contributor to the Dreamcast’s demise. You’re forgetting how slow consumer level CD burners were back then. On top of that, 56k was still the most common internet speed.

I was surprised too. At the time I felt the Dreamcast had a better lineup than PS2. But I guess the number crunchers at SEGA had a good idea of how many consumers were going to buy the new PlayStation. I don’t have a link to an article or anything, but I seem to recall the DC sold past their projections. Guess Sony had too much momentum.

Tired of losing money, maybe. The Saturn was a probably a difficult system to cut costs on and make a profit due to all its various chips. But the Dreamcast has some legs, probably could have dropped steeply in price. Meanwhile the architecture lived on in various arcade hardware.

I dunno, it’s like “what if-ing” a true 16-bit PC Engine, we’ll never know.

The guy I knew would hand out stapled printouts listing all the games and music he had access to and charged 3 bucks a disc in batches of 8. The idea that piracy even affected the Dreamcast is suburbanite revisionism. There are so many real detrimental factors that had measurable effects on the Dreamcast's performance that if piracy had been relevant then it'd be a system destroying menace on every console ever.

So at first I had to play just two games which I didn't rly love (that much, Sega Rally and some future flying-skateboarding racer with tricks etc.). Later on pirates became avalible. So I killed my laser with that deer-pirate shit. I've kinda earned it I guess.
But there were games that I rly loved and remember even today. Record of Lodoss War, Jet Set/Grind Radio. Soul Calibur, Grandia 2 (for some reason, also save died in the middle of the story (it was unevitable iirc).

This stuff about the hardware being outdated is crap. The PS2 was marginally better, and harder to develop for. Hardware wasn't the dreamcast's problem, outside of the stupid gimmick of the PS2 playing DVDs. In fact, almost nothing was the dreamcast's problem. The only thing I can think of Sega might have made a mistake on was using GD-Roms instead of just DVDs.
The writing was on the wall because of the Saturn. Everything about that time was fucked. The architecture, the launch, the stupidity in deliberately not releasing 2D or RPG games in the west, it was a disaster.

Piracy may or may not be a factor, for example in Poland early 2000 it was. Some (few) people could afford relatively fast internet and cd-burners (although I don't even remember if they were still such crazy expensive in early 2000's). They were selling games for 1/10 of shop price and police didn't give a fuck about it. Add general poverty to this and suddenly piracy became major factor. I'll pick a light gun over a mouse any day. Light guns make good for target practice and saves me real ammo.

bit disappointed
then I kinda wanted to get one because they were cheap as piss

was really surprised that the DC died, didn't know jack about the Saturn and had forgotten about Sega for a bit before I heard about the DC and got to play SA1 at a kiosk

no on all counts

>1. It was easy to pirate games
it didn't kill software sales, and you needed a source of games to pirate (either you did have high speed internet and could burn them yourself (rare), or you had to go to chinatown or something and hit up the guy you'd been going to for burned music and shit (fair bit more common))
as an aside, DC rips from 2001 fucking blew chunks with awful data layouts and you'd spend ages for shit to load while your DC made horrible grinding noises (also, the DC reads CDs at half the speed of GD-ROMs)

>2. PS2 destroyed it
it's got somewhat better hardware, but the PS2's first year wasn't terribly good at all, it didn't have the software and what was there looked the same or worse than what was on DC
the second year was absolutely fucking amazing and pretty much signaled a new era in gaming and is probably what really solidified the gap between post-2000 and pre-2000 games, but the DC was already out of the picture then
The real issue is that Sega didn't have the money to deal with any slump in sales, and a good chunk of people were waiting on PS2's release to make a decision.
Sega's past issues caught up the 'em. Even if the PS2 was probably going to shoot past it, it wouldn't have killed the DC like what happened.

>3. It was too obscure for normie gamers (e.g. Seaman)
DC had a bunch of sports games, Resident Evil, multiplats that looked better on it than other machines, etc
people remember the obscure shit nowadays because there's no fucking reason to play anything else on it these days, but at the time, it had a decent library of things that could appeal to the more casual crowd

>>4901403
Yeah, it wasn't too uncommon. Got to play F-Zero X at a Sears once.

>Dreamcast discontinues way before Xbox and GC were released and officially announced
>"oh my, that was their critical hit to Sega"
Really, what the fuck are guys even talking about?

>>4900183
Dreamcast was released in 98. In 98 few even cared about the dvd because vhs were way cheaper, easy to have and common to burn tv shows. The DVD was expensive and not worth. And Sony... was Sony, they owned a bunch of media stuff and having their consoles with dvd would be a gamble that could been covered by other finantial means inside that huge world wide company. Sega or Nintendo would have to make a deal with someone to even try to have a dvd player and their gamble would be risky as hell.
It seems weird, but 2 years back then was a huge gap.

It wasnt only Shenmue. Soul Calibur looked amazing. RE CV was released originally for the DC with 2 discs.

I knew people back then that would burn pc and psx games easily. I asked about the dreamcast games and one of them said "I cant even burn Shenmue because the size is bigger than regular cds and even the 900mb wont work. SoA is another of those".
The other one was a personal friend and just brings me a pile of like 100 burned DC games and says "try them". Of all 100 only 20 worked right and another 3 or 4 games would work sometimes, but the ones that worked the most were fps games that also worked well online. The boot discs wouldnt even want to work... The guy just says me later "see? I give up, it isnt worth, just a waste of money and cds"
This is why piracy was never a problem for the DC because it only got right after being killed. But things are said that the piracy killed the DC for one sole reason, is that there was never need for a damn modchip, just "burn" the game and it will work, which is lie because data was fucked until 2003 or so. SoA was one of those games with self-boot that took years to get to work right.

Oh I agree those were all fantastic looking games at the time. My point was that there's just no way the Dreamcast hardware would've been capable of producing character models and environments that were anywhere close to being as detailed as what we saw in major 2001 releases like Final Fantasy X or Metal Gear Solid 2.
