Are retro racing games obsolete?

>> No.4894807

The opposite. Its one of the most graceful aging genres in existence.

>> No.4894810

Technically, yes. Modern entries of Forza, and to a lesser extent Gran Turismo do everything retro sim racers do better. That said, retro racing games, are still fun games and that's all that really matters. Nothing fun is ever really 'obsolete'. Non-sim racing games hold up even better since they weren't supposed to be 'realistic' to begin with.

>> No.4894816

Sim racers yes, arcade racers no. Nobody's really doing the latter anymore and it's a safe bet that the best games of the genre will remain in the retro era.

Why aren't new arcade racers being made? Those games were the best

Are there any retro racers that follow the formula of more modern ones with tons of unlockables or progression systems?

Besides Gran Turismo 1 & 2, I can't think of any. It's also not really worth playing those two when you could play GT Sport or Forza 5.

Lots in 5th gen. The Wipeout and N64 Top Gears immediately come to mind.

I love Rage Racer, but man do you have to grind out money.

>> No.4895207

>>4894835
I hated 5. By far 4 was the best one. Sure you have to get some dlc car packs but when you can get the basic game for 10 bux or less it's worth it. So many more care than the later ones. Never knew I wanted to do an engine swap on a Ford ecoline van before. Oh and for arcade style, horizon one was best horizon

arcade ones not at all, all the best ones are old. Sims is a mixed bag, for the most part yes new ones are better but you still have things like richard burns rally which at 14 yrs old is still by FAR the best rally sim out.

More realistic graphics doesn't make a game fun magically nor does it make it a "better" game.
Outrun, Daytona USA or Virtua Racing Deluxe are still fun. I even had a blast with Chase HQ recently.

>> No.4898945

I like the graphics, because they are so very gamey. You could still do that today, but who even does that?

Not in the slightest. DiRT Rally and Project Cars 2 are some of the best racing sims out there, and as far as retro games go, Gran Turismo 2 is still a lot of fun today just because of the sheer number of cars and soundtrack.

The thing is a well done racing game doesn't really age too badly. The PS1 had one of the best racing game rosters of any system.

Yeah, a bunch of arcade games in Japan let you save your progress and stats to specially made memory card things, which allows you to win unlockables in the game and use them later.
I know Pokken had a system like that.
