I love Gradius III on the SNES, but the game was almost unplayable at times with its sub par framerate. I would take Thunder Force III over VI. Though TFIV is still a great game.

Axelay is one of the better shoot 'em ups on the SNES, i'm not sure it would be a better game than Gaiares though. Space Mega Force and UN Squadron are good too. But the Genesis has games that are comparable to them.

The PC-Engine isn't like The Genesis/ Mega Drive at all. The system has a custom 8bit MOS 65C02 (The NES uses a MOS 6502) with a 7.16MHz overclock mode. The Genesis/ MD has a 16bit Motorola 68000 that runs at 7.16Mhz with a 32bit address bus. The 68000 blows apart the 65C02 variant in the PC-Engine.

The PC-Engine does have a 16-bit graphics core that can display more on screen colours than the Genesis/ Mega Drive, though it doesn't quite have the scrolling capabilities of the Genesis/ Mega Drive.

The Genesis/ MD is like a low rent 16bit arcade board turned into a game console. It's M6800, Z80, FMsynth chip is a similar configuration to arcade boards like the Neo-Geo, Capcom CPS2, Sega boards and other 16bit arcade boards from the time period. Though the Genesis/ Mega Drive is not as powerful.

>The 68000 blows apart the 65C02 variant in the PC-Engine.
Eh not quite, the 65C02 has much better IPC, though the Motorola 68000 makes up for this with its 16-bit/32-bit instruction set and 16-bit memory bus. My point is that while the 68000 is still the fastest, what the PC-Engine and Genesis have is closer in speed to each other than to the SNES.

I dunno, looking at games like Strider:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2CQt4mlIrw&

The Genesis games looks much closer to the arcade original here (scan to 2 minutes) . The PCE CD-ROM game lacks additional layers of scrolling, appears to have slow down and is missing even more animation.

Not saying the PCE is bad hardware though. It actually does a good version of Street Fighter II:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjBl-I6fVdo

Though it is missing some layers of scrolling in comparison to the Genesis/ MD game. But it holds its own really well, and in a couple ways looks a little better.

But comparing a game like Aero Blasters, the PCE holds its own really well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jR0tSW7QQU&t=72s

PCE version has nice colour, though the Genesis game has bigger looking sprites at times.

Even with games like Super Aleste, Parodius, and a few others, the SNES SHMUPS library is pretty underwhelming compared to either the Genesis/ Mega Drive or PC Engine. Suer there are also a few other decent shooters like UN Squadron, R-Type 3, Gradius III (massive slowdown) and a couple others. But the SNES/ Super Famicom SHMUP library pales in comparison to the other 16 bit systems on the market at the time.

A lot of this will be down to the Genesis VDP instead of the CPU because it supports an extra layer, and more importantly, has quite powerful scrolling capabilities. Also helps that the PC Engine’s Strider port was trash.

Many graphical tricks on PC Engine had to be offloaded onto the CPU what Genesis could do equivalently on VDP.

>> No.4896380

>>4896234
>Many graphical tricks on PC Engine had to be offloaded onto the CPU what Genesis could do equivalently on VDP.

Oh yeah, the Genesis VDP was quite good at scrolling multi-layered backgrounds. I think it only 2 or 3 scrolling layers, but the VPD could do other tricks like changing the speed of a scanline on a layer to create parallax effects. Or make the layers go all wavy.

Here's another comparison. Raiden Trad on the PCE vs the Genesis/ MD:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EUUtrQu1Uk

The PCEngine version looks pretty nice overall and is a good rendition of the original arcade game. But the Genesis game is higher resolution, and I think the levels were made a little longer for this version (I could be wrong?). The Genesis game is closer to the arcade version in many ways. Though it does have washed out looking colours.

Compare the SNEs port of Raiden Trad to the Genesis/ MD:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z_iyJKeqSE

The SNES port has nicer colours, but the background layer looks like it is running at 20FPS.

Zero wing is unironically pretty good despite being a meme game
Sol Deace has an awesome ost but is weird because your sprite is huge for a shmup

There is a decent ROM hack for the Genesis Raiden Trad that alters the colour to look more like the arcade game, it also alteres the sprites and tiles to make the Genesis/ Mega Drive game look closer to the arcade title. It looks good.

There is a Thunder Force game for the SNES called Thunder Spirits. Thunder Sprits on the SNES is a port of the Thunder Force AC arcade game that was published by Sega. Thunder Force AC is based on Thunder Force III on the Genesis/ Mega Drive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfFjOqquYtI

So the SNES Thunder Spirits plays like a streamlined version of the Genesis/ Mega Drive Thunder Force III. Thunder Spirits is one of the better shooters on the SNES, but at the same time it is worse than Thunder Force III in so many respects. Thunder Sprits has way more slowdown, is missing the level select from the Genesis game. Is lower resolution. It does have a good soundtrack, though. But I prefer the Genesis soundtrack over it.

Thunder Spirits is a good SNES shooter, but at the same time, the SNES still struggles to emulate Thunder Force III. Thunder Force IV is a technical showpiece. I doubt the SNES would be capable of a solid port.

Genesis had 68k and SNES had 65816. While the 68k used more clock cycles per instruction than the 65816, it could be clocked significantly higher. It also had multiply instructions. Overall the 68k had more computational power. Of course the SNES had a variety of on-cart coprocessors to make up the difference if needed.

Also, the screen resolution on the genesis is better, which is important for shumps.
