Trigger is not the best game of all time.
Trigger is not in the top 5 games of all time.
Trigger is not in the top 5 RPGs of all time.
Trigger is not in the top 5 RPGs on the SNES.
Trigger is not even in the top 5 regular JRPGs (excluding action adventures, tactics games, dungeon crawlers, etc.) on the SNES.

Trigger perhaps occupies the #10 slot in the top regular JRPGs on the SNES.

Definitely a solid game and important in the genre. I would say it's a classic that everyone, especially retro gaming fans, should play at least once in their lifetime. While it does have its flaws, it still holds up and is more or less worthy of its reputation. I agree that it has become a bit mainstream, and while it's hailed as the greatest game of all time, those who have more experience with retro games and overall a wider pallete of video games in general know that the greatest video game of all time is Dual Orb 2.

Chrono Trigger is cool, but sometimes I get embarrassed when I see that people were emotionally moved by something in the game. The art direction makes everything really goofy. Like it's good for almost everything it does, but if you think the story is something more than a light-hearted cartoon, you might be deluded. With that said, the one exception is the part where you have to save Lucca's mom, which is totally messed up and scary.

I'm not even trying to be elitist, I play traditional jRPGs, but I got so much more fulfillment from DQ3, 5 and 8 than many of these canonical SNES/PS1 classics, it's not even funny. Call it my grinding obsession if you want, I just can't get into narrative-heavy jrpgs if I don't get involved with the combat. The only time you could possibly die in Chronp Trigger is against later bosses.
