I say start with whatever you like best and want to get good at. Down to '98 classic or UM, Third Strike or Second Impact. Whatever appeals to you the most, just play that. Fuck everything else for now. Every iteration of every fighting game has it's own little quirks so it's best to get the ones for the game you like best to be ingrained first and deepest. At the same time most fighters are kind of the same and once you learn the basics of footsies, rushing, 50/50's etc subsequent games get easier to get into.

So if you think you want to get into say King of Fighters, but think all the characters are lame and faggy, ask yourself why you think you want to get into it. Don't pick a game because it's popular, just pick what you like best and get learning.
