I killed a Sega CD trying to install a region-free BIOS today. Don't drill out through-holes, I promise I'll make us of it's parts to salvage it.

CONFESS

You see bros, it's a 40 pin DIP and all I had was a solder sucker that wasn't doing much good. I paid $150 for a desoldering gun and it still couldn't remove all of it. I used snips to cut the chip legs off to remove it then it was 100x harder to remove the pins from the holes with a pair of tweezers. I had to use an extremely thin drill bit on a driver to drill out the holes but it ripped the pads off that were connected straight to the IC to vias on the other side of the world. I'm so sorry to this Sega CD, I brought it back from the grave and killed it at the same time, even """pros""" make mistakes sometimes. I promise to make use of it's remaining parts and CD assembly.

>drill out through-holes,

What the fuck you retard?
you can buy a cheap soldering iron and solder pump for probably less than 12 dollars for both on ebay

It wouldn't desolder, my gun, my hot air, my braid, my sucker. Flooded with flux and reflow. I don't know why, it was so stubborn. After 30 minutes I said fuck it and hand-drilled through the hole and at the last few turns it took the pad with it and it was game over and it wasn't connected to anything but the one of the main 100qfp ICs.

Was the solder even melting to the point you could suck it?

You may have needed higher heat

It was, I cranked it up to 400C and it still wouldn't take it out with the vacuum pump after reflow of leaded solder and flux.

I gutted a Gyromite for its 72 pin converter
I regret nothing

I have a Turbo CD that is seized up. It seems like a simple enough fix, but my hands are too shaky to work on small stuff and I don't want to break it. Those things are like $600.
