Okay, I seriously don't get it.
I am in a Quake dir.
I create "final" folder in it.
I go to Quake/ID1 folder, copy PAK0.PAK and PAK1.PAK, paste them in Quake/final directory.
I create a bat file there for starting Quake with "-game final" parameter.
I start the game.
map e1m8
Ziggurat vertigo loads from Quake/ID1/PAK0.PAK, with reduced gravity, as it should.
map final/e1m8
Ziggurat vertigo loads from Quake/final/PAK0.PAK, WITHOUT the reduced gravity (that is with the default one).

A zombie that absolutely destroys you and isnt a pushover either. Plus they made a great decision using the shotgun sfx for its gunfire sound, abit lazy not making up a new sfx for it but it works so much better (than the pistol sfx).
Armor colors are great too, they could have gave him green armor to represent his health like the player's under armor jacket. Maroon red makes him look murderous.

Get either the GOG release with BMouse.exe, or set yourself up with the BDX port.

Make a point of ducking and jumping a bunch when in gunfights, also don't be afraid to retreat behind a pillar or corner for a breather.
Bullets hurt a lot, so trying to tank damage is a *terrible* idea and I would advise against it at all times.

You cant play higher difficulties like you do in doom, they are designed for punishment and co-op play. If you want a challenge just go with the 3rd difficulty but I think even 2nd difficulty will yield the same number of monsters.

More than likely you're going to have an absolute overflow of ammunition if you're using stuff right. If you're overloaded with flares the pistol has an unrealistic devastating altfire attack.

The fun begins when you get the Napalm Launcher, its altfire is almost useless but you dont need it for that.

You have several types of Dynamite switched by pressing the weapon number. Thats what the two icons in the lower right of the status bar are for. Also standard Dynamite explodes on impact and has a rather tight blast radius so it requires skill, altfire is a long fuse delay.

Pic related is how a few of the maps in Blood actually remind me of shit in Quake 1, if used properly the build engine can really make some good stuf.

Enormous damage, high stun capability, and the ammunition is provided for readily. There has been a large number of tesla capacitor batteries that I have either been unable to pickup due to max ammo, or had just a few shots used from maximum and it wasted a battery. This isnt an ammo type that enemies drop really, its placed on the maps.

And I have all the other weapons to choose from too. Like the Napalm Launcher or Dynamite. Even if I used up all the ammo for the tesla gun id still have very powerful weapons to choose from (including usually a voodoo doll I havent touched, maybe even a life leech). I just self nerf usually and dont use the tesla gun unless its a monster thats resistant to fire. I think the under-sized spider queen boss is resistant to the tesla gun but explosives manage her well enough.

I always thought of the pipe bomb weapon in Duke (which obviously lead to the dynamite weapon) as a mediator to 2.5D game design. Since you can't look all the way down and tackle an enemy who's almost completely vertical to your position, you can instead throw down a pipe bomb/dynamite to take him out. Great innovation on Duke's part, but Blood's dynamite took it to the next level and is probably the single most satisfying weapon I've ever used in video games.

Being able to throw explosives in an arc, and bouncing them against surfaces, is generally an incredibly good thing.

That's why I am so in love with hand grenades, in general. If you add them or a similar weapon to Doom, you'll find that they're extremely good and fun weapons that solve a lot of problems for you.

This game is awesome and so underrated I don't understand why you guys don't discus it more often here
I guess the reason is it was kinda buggy when first released but nowadays the GOG version runs flawlessly on modern systems.
(it even comes with the expansion for free)

The only thing you gotta do is limit the frame rate with the console because nowadays it runs at like a 1000fps and that bugs the engine physics

Just type in cl_maxfps 125 (or whatever else frame rate you want)

Seriously if you haven't played SIN yet do yourself a favor and try it out

Second this. God i'm having so much fun these days with the very first Quake, it's astonishing. Level design, secrets, enemies, setting, weapons, feel and so on; but most importantly: the soundtrack! Absolute silence. The only thing you must hear are your enemies getting their asses fragged. Wonderful game, hundreds times better then the blazoned space stations of Doom.

I also have a really deep love for Hexen 2. We just cant do this type of over the top dark gothic fantasy anymore.

I think its an definite improvement on the overall sad state of fps, and fuels my hate that bethesda with also Arkane fucked up so much an opportunity to bring back LGS System Shock\thief revival with their fucking mediocre Dishonored and half hearted Prey.

Nu Doom has some issues, I dislike the closed arenas, the puny weapon sounds, the overall demon aesthetic is the usual plastic looking big monster instead of screaming demon, like, cyberdemon. Its like we lost the ability to make shit look cool.

Thoughts on the Painkiller series?

Love them myself, only real drawback is how easily the upgrade system can brake the game. Just that one card that makes every soul recover 2 health instead of one will basically guarantee you that youll never die again.

So the key to remember is, play the games, theyre amazing, but dont buy any upgrades.

The death knights are also deceptively strong, almost twice as much health as you would expect them to have. Based on how easy it is to take down the knights, the death knight looks like it should probably only have twice as much health. Im not saying they should be modded to be weaker, only that their size and armor design (3d model) should be bigger and more wicked looking.

so GZDoom builder is crashing every time I try to save. I tried installing the latest bugfix version, the send and 3rd latest bugfix version, and some of the regular release candidates.

I had r2787 installed before and it worked fine, but for some reason now it's crashing when I try to save too.

This is windows 10 with a decent computer so that hardware shouldn't really be the issue. I've been working on a map and have a shitload of work done, but now I cannot save...

The fuck am i supposed to do on Moonlight Morass map of Golden Souls 2.
I even used cheats and looked at the map in GZDoomBuilder and still cant figure it out.

First off, I thought I downloaded this level from idgames2 or quakerepo, well I didn't. This particular level I downloaded from quaddicted. Which means it can be found here:
It has a discussion too, which indicates that this level is a modified version of this level, which sure as hell looks similar from the screenshot provided:
It has a lengthy discussion on how awful that level is and 1.5/5 with 12 ratings.
Also, the inside readme states that the author started learning mapping a week prior to map's initial release, it's author's first map, and that the author is 15 years old.

I don't know either how similar or different really that level from level.zip is to the level from rohling.zip. The same as to why the hell did AFTERSHOCK texture appear in it. The same as to whether whoever modified (modified?) the level was its original author. Although I highly doubt a 15 year old could be a part of the main Aftershock team, provided there were at least two professional game developers there (author of the Thred editor, and the author of the third episode of the campaign).

tl;dr: I don't fucking know anymore. But I genuinely liked how that level played out (level.zip version, as I haven't played the rohling.zip version), even though it's explicitly Trololo: The Level, fucking sue me, it has a point to it.

Speaking of upcoming titles. I think Wolfenstein Youngblood will be the last game of the entire series.

The New Colossus got such a mixed reception that now the hype died out.

No. Did Raven work on RTCW? I must have forgotten that, no, but RTCW was a fucking masterpiece and my favorite entry in the series, it's one of my childhood favorites.
It's core Wolfenstein, IMO.

I mean the 2009 game, which, I didn't hate, but it had some serious flaws to it, and I can see why fans of classic Wolf3D as well as RTCW wouldn't perhaps love it.

I have heard it's mediocre across the board and that it comes off as rushed, I haven't played it yet, but I quite loved New Order, so if that's true, then I'd be pretty disappointed.
The extremely unsubtle politics shoved into it (which says something, considering the subject matter), I hear is supposed to be the sewage icing on the mediocrity cake.

I'm planning to play it myself, to form my own opinion, but I'm a bit intimidated by what I've heard.

Okay, played through rohling.zip. Basically, the Aftershock version is the exact same map retextured with Aftershock textures (and somehow due to that it manages to look way worse than the original map). As a kid, I had the GBA ports, and though crippled, they play alright and are still kind of fun. Doom 2 had a much better port. As it is, for being Doom that you can fit in your pocket, it's pretty damn decent. I would love a better port on 3DS though.

The 32X version has a solid framerate with pretty much no slowdowns, and crystal clear audio with no compression, using a six button controller, it controls quite ok, too.
It shorts out in like Ep2 though, so you get quite a truncated experience, also the music is extremely ass, so consider turning that off, and finally, the monsters have no rotations, thus seeing them walk left and right in front of you looks really funny.

SNES version has an ok music rendition, but the choppy performance and framerate, as well as the clunky controls, prevented me from enjoying it.

PS3 port, specifically the Classic Complete release, has all the expansions; Ultimate, TNT, Plutonia, all the Master Levels, and also No Rest From The Living. It's however censored, changed medkits, no Nazis (blame Germany for that). It has the sound pitch randomization, which can't be turned off, but it also has pretty good controls, feels pretty natural to play.

The second game shits all over the plot and character of SW2013, if you expect to get more of that kind of stuff in 2, you don't have any kind of worthwhile camaraderie, and it just ruins what seemed poignant and interesting about the previous game's resolution.

Lo Wang is made kind of dumber and is just dickjokes, and the new support character is an annoying bitch. The idea was to give Lo Wang a "conscience", which is not only very misguided, (because you're supposed to hold some contempt for him), but it's done really badly.
I could forgive this, but the level design some of the most abysmal I've seen in many years.
2013 had some pretty samey looking environments (did everyone in the world buy their cabinets at Ikea?), but at least level layouts were different as you progressed.
2 has like, 8 pre-baked maps which it recycles ENDLESSLY throughout the entire fucking game, so even if they put effort into making a bunch of new furniture and interior decor, it's brutally wasted on extremely boring levels.

I like a lot of the new weapons, but a lot are shit, also the weapon upgrade system is easy enough to get into, but it's slow in returns, also there's ways to make more monumental upgrades, but it takes an absolutely retarded amount of your time to be able to earn enough tokens to afford even one, so I don't even get why it's there.
Every single mention I see of it online has people suggest you just cheat and edit your savefile to get a million tokens, so if you're on console then you're fucked.

Overall, I would say it takes one step forward, but two steps back. It feels like Randy Pitchford kidnapped the game in the middle of the night and raped it in a basement.

I actually played it.
My conclusion is that the next time Sergeant Mark IV says that Brutal Doom isn't inspired by Call of Duty, he needs his balls flayed for obvious lies, because "realism mode" is based almost entirely on CoD.

Brutal Doom is most fun when you're rapidly rushing to kill monsters in close quarters with shotgun or berserk, and at it's absolute fucking worst when you need to camp around corners using ADS and grenades (because unlike HD, BD lacks the depth to make slower gameplay fun). And 'realism mode' simply makes sure that there will be more of the latter.

It fucking sucks, and it's objectively worse than regular gameplay. That's my opinion.
