Nah man. I liked the game a lot. It was fun and spooky. But it was still a bad thing for the series. It should have been a spin off or a new IP. It is a great game, but it wasnt good for survival horror.

>> No.487913

I would disagree. During the time RE4 was announced people were constantly complaining about how stagnant and outdated the "classic" RE formula was.

RE4 was what the franchise needed in order to not die. While it may not have been survival horror in the traditional sense, the RE games in general had become more and more action-y and games like Silent Hill had filled in that survival horror niche better.

RE4 was just a natural progression in the series and without it we wouldn't have RE at all.

Nah, 4 was a breath of fresh air. RE5 was the true beginning of the end. It's where they threw out everything Resident Evil-y... well, except for Wesker.

Can't wait to see RE7 though. That'll either be a complete revival or the biggest misunderstanding of American action blockbusters since RE6.

>> No.487934

> without it we wouldn't have RE at all.
Not to be cynical... But would that be such a loss?

We wouldn't have 2 shitty action games, and we would miss a decent 3DS game. That isnt too big a loss in my opinion.

>> No.487950

>>487934
We also wouldn't have hope of a return to form, and the greatest RE game.

RE6 was a huge kick in ass for Capcom and they know it. They consider it a failure and we can only hope they find out why. Of course their recent documents to investors haven't exactly inspired confidence. Still, even if you didn't like RE4, you wouldn't have any foreseeable chance of a more classic survival horror RE title.

>> No.487967

>>487754

I thought RE4 was one of the best games in the entire series, RE2 being first of course. RE4 had all the things a survival horror should have, such as hordes of varied, challenging enemies, atmospheric scenery and music, and integrating puzzles with combat. There were a few things that pissed me off about RE4, though. That was mainly escorting that whinging spunkcave everywhere.

Happens with most RE threads though. There's always that one guy that says RE4 was the worst thing to happen to RE.

But, we got shitload of pre-rendered backgrund, tank controlled, static camera RE's already. Including the masterpiece theatre double feature RE2 and REmake. How many more of those did we really need? According to the dwindling sales, not much more.

See... well, I hated the puzzles. They got in the way of the actual survival horror. And didn't the American version of one of the early Resi games have extra puzzles added so it would take longer to complete and thus make more money for video rental stores?

No question in my mind that RE4 is the high point for the entire franchise. Absolutely one of the best games ever made at the time, and it hasn't aged poorly at all.

That was only if something went wrong with it. My older brother's PlayStation (which was chipped) stopped playing games unless it was upside down. Something to do with the laser.
It was a common fault with some models of the PlayStation. However, the one which had the least faults, was the PlayStation model which made the quiet "beep" after you started it up.
It had the blue/purple bubble background for the "no disc" screens, the first version, still having the grey tiles (superior) and the connect-two-PlayStations-together-ports, and the port which had the special explorer cheat packs go into but some minor modifications. The next model had all the external features but it had the blue/purple bubble "no disc" screen.

Compare a screencap of RE4 environment to the pre-rendered background of RE1 (not the remake). It's much better actually. And that was Gamecube days. There's no point in using static pre-rendered background now. Stop your denial, the old style RE won't be back.

This nigger knows what he was talking about.

>WHO ARE YOU, THE PROUD LORD SAID, THAT I MUST BOW SO LOW?
I'm in my mid 20s, been playing RE since 1 on Saturn. I remember thinking I was going to get in trouble for playing the RE2 text adventure on videogames now known only as gamespot, because it asked how old I was when I logged in to play it. I remember the controversy about Chris smoking in the directors cut. I remembered running around with a toy shotgun through back alleys in brooklyn recreating with friends how RE1 would transition to RE2. I remember talking about unlocking the minigun in 2 with everyone at the lunch table and about the alligator in the sewers.
>2013, RE4 RUINED THE FRANCHISE.
Bottom line is I hate being told by a bunch of underage fags or softcore "Tru3 RE fans" at what point "RE jumped the shark" when they're full of shit.

Because even I knew the series was milked dry by CV. 3 was a disappointment compared to 2, and the survivor series was trash. Not to mention after 2 everybody wanted a piece of the survival horror pie, and arguably, some people came out with a better understanding of its core mechanics than Capcom (see the first 3 Silent hills), but liking RE is more than liking survival horror.

4 -was- the natural progression of things, you can tell this from DMC. It is also by far the best -game- in the franchise.
>BUT ITS NOT RE
EVERY true mechanic of RE, ranging from the basic control layout to overall game progression and hell, ending the boss with a rocket launcher, all core mechanics are there, even tank controls. The only thing that changed involved the TPS over the shoulder camera and number of enemies. Its my personal favorite RE and one best games ever, "hardcore" fanbases are and will always be shit.

>1,2 and 3 - tank controls/umbrella virus zombies
>4,5 and 6 - third person/some parasite zombies

3 vs 3 and they all are RE games.

it's not like just because the first 3 were different from the last 3 or 4 they automatically are unrelated.

it's just the controls and zombie type that change, the rest is pretty much the same shit (shoot zombies/monsters and survive)

so they all are technically RE games just with different styles.

TL:DR

The reason why people turned their systems over was NOT because of heat issues.

They did it because the laser diode and the tracks for the motor would fuck off. Turning your system on its side was stage 1. Turning on the other side was stage 2. Terminal stage was upside down, and it was time to desolder your mod chip and get another PSX.

The problem a lot of people had/have with RE4 is that it has almost nothing to do with RE.

The gameplay is very much a natural evolution of what they did in past games, and was logical. The problem is that they broke the entire thing down to nothing more than:
>run straight
>shoot things
>complete "puzzle" that practically solves itself
>run straight
>shoot more things
>ect
It was the blueprint for later shitty games like Modern Warfare, Black Ops and worse. Not to mention that when I first played Dead Space, I immediately thought "THIS is what RE4 should have been like!" So Crapcom hadn't quite hit the nail on the head with rE4, as a lot of fanboys like to pretend. They layed the groundwork for better designers to do more impressive things. The first 4 REs (1-3 and CV/X) are still considdered classics because they stand on their own, while RE4 is considdered a classic by nintendo fans who had it as "baby's first action game". And that's it.
Plus, RE5 did everything RE4 did, but did a lot better job of it, and Revelations showed what RE4 could have been: A fusion of new gameplay ideas and classic level layout styles and concepts. So RE4 isn't even the best new RE...

In addition to all that, the plot had almost nothing to do with RE in the least. Leon, Ada and Wesker were in, but their involvement had nothing to do with past games and led to nothing in later games. They were all just there so they could label an unrelated action game "Resident Evil". And that's it.

RE4 is a pile of crap in the series that's only still cannon because of fanboys and the inclusion of plagas in RE5. Other than that, you could totally skip it and not miss a beat, lol.

It's literally a totally pointless entry in the series.
Hell, RE6 at least gave us insight into who Ada's been working for and updated us on Sherry and gave a bunch of background info in files. RE4 couldn't even manage anything that minor...

The same could be applied to classic RE.
>PUZZLES
none of the puzzles in RE2 were especially challenging, only 1 and 3 had any challenging puzzles, and I think RE4's knight puzzle is on par with that.
RE4 was the natural evolution of the franchise and fixed many problems the series had.
>CVX and 3 are considered classics
By who? You? "TRU3 RE fans"? Well I'm surprised you can swallow so much shit and spew it out all the same.

>RE4 is considered a classic by nintendo fans
RE4 is considered a classic and the best RE game by a wide majority of people and today remains the most well received RE title after the franchise became stagnant with the 3rd entry.
