Is RE3 worth going back and beating? I gave up as a kid when I met Carlos or some short time after.

>> No.4877102

You barely played the game then. As for worth, if you enjoy the classic games, it will be worthwhile since it's slightly updated from 2 with emergency dodging. Otherwise, don't bother.

>> No.4877224

Yes, 3 is good but unfortunately a little short. The best part about it is the fact that you get to explore Raccoon City (to an extent, ps1 games not being very big and whatnot). 2 was good but disappointing because you are on the streets of RC for like 10 minutes but in 3 you are running around the city having fun. Take down Nemesis outside and inside the police station and get the Eagle in the first 20 minutes and run around crackin kids with it in speed runs. It's fun. Obviously you wont be speedrunning it your first few times but rest assured that it is fun. Save your type C gun powder for freeze rounds.

There's also the regular American PC Port of RE3 which is also good, lets you skip doors like the Chinese one, and has the best presentation, you can make the game look quite pretty.

Genuinely my favourite game in the series. I like the randomization that enables so much replay and the gunpowder system is my favourite weapon mechanic in the series - not only do you choose what ammo your item finds become, but you actually "level up" your mixing every 3/4 times you create the same ammo type. Now you make more of it. It creates a decision between mixing gunpowder AAA once for more bullets now vs mixing gunpowder A 3 times to level up the tool and make more bullets with your AAAs later.

For pistol and shotgun, after a certain amount of mixing you can even start making Enhanced ammo for the weapon that only works on the basic guns, giving players the option to keep using them for their power even when a faster, superior pistol/shotgun becomes available from Nemesis kills.

The gunpowder mechanic would have been so much better if freeze rounds weren't objectively better than everything else in the game in 99% of situations. It's not like materials are sparse either, you end up with way more than you feasibly need by the end of the game, even fighting Nemesis every time.

Well good job, here is my attempt just now.
I used PC Sourcenext version in US Hard mode.

I used to perform much better, been a while since I did this so I waste a lot of time picking up un-needed supplies and since I was playing in Jap I made the wrong choice at the cable car and used the brakes, hence wasting time as well.

I'll try again some other time, this time in English.

>pharmacy
>jump out the window of the cable car
>use the cord on Nemesis
>Jump off the bridge

and at the end: Negotiate with Nicholai and Ingore and Evacuate to save time, but in normal play I wreck their asses.

>a bit of handgun until I get the shotgun
>shotgun for the few zombies which are harder to dodge throughout the game

New attempts, tried to optimize supply pick ups but I could do even better. Wasted a few mins on stupid things as well.

>>4882630
afaik all non-Nemesis encounters are semi random. Same for the semi-random item pick ups, they're just that, random, and actions have no effect on them.

Pushing Nemesis off the bridge means that you have to go down the elevator all the way to the water test water; and then go all the way back up; whereas if you jump off you're already down there.

The main difference though is the way Nicholai shows up, so maybe there is a time save there.

Also, do you jump off the cable car or use the brakes? I think jumping off is faster, same principle, and it's rewarded by a pack of gas grenades.
However I'm started to think that using the brakes may lead to an easier Nemesis fight.

>>4882702

On top of that, enemy HP is determined randomly each time you enter a room. If you do damage to an enemy, leave the room, then come back, their HP will be refilled and randomized once again.

I didn't mess around with it long enough in RE3 to get exact HP ranges, but I found that in RE1, zombie HP ranges from 19 to 99, and Cerberus HP ranges from 59 to about 122 (but they take more damage from most weapons). Zombies in RE1 take 8 damage from the knife, 12 from the handgun, while the Cerberus takes 30 damage from the knife, 27 from the handgun.

Well, I can't test it out until next weekend, if need be.

Jill has 200 HP in RE3. A green herb heals 50 HP, two heals 100, and three heals 200, as does a green and a red. First aid spray is also 200.

0 to 20 HP is danger, 21 to 40 is orange caution, 41 to 100 is yellow caution, 101 to 200 is fine. I'm pretty sure HP and herbs work the same way in RE2, though the JP version of RE2 reduces the damage you take once your HP is 120 or less. This feature was removed from the US release.

RE1 is different, because Chris and Jill both have different HP values, and their HP is further modified by what mode you're playing on. The JP and US versions have the same HP values, as far as I've tested, but you take 20% more damage from enemies in the US. On Arrange mode, Jill has 70 HP, and a single green herb healed her for 23 HP, while two combined healed for 46. So, it looks like it's 33% recovery for each.

RE1 HP values, for the curious:

Normal mode:
Jill: 96 HP
Chris: 140 HP

Beginner mode:
Jill: 150 HP
Chris: 180 HP

Arrange mode:
Jill: 70 HP
Chris: 100 HP

I have a few. I kinda ran out of time to mess around with testing stuff like that, but I hope to get back to it eventually.

RE1 (JP)
Zombie: 10 (bite), 6 (leg bite), 5 (vomit)
Cerberus: 12 (bite)

Keep in mind that the damage you take in the US RE1 is 20% higher, at least as far as the early game enemies go. I didn't get to test anything from later on in the game.

RE2
Zombie: 30/20 (bite), 7/5 (leg bite or vomit)
Brad Zombie: 45/? (bite)
Licker: 100/80 (jumping slash), 22/15 (swipe), 37/? (tongue)

Speaking of Brad, he has 250 HP, which is why he takes so long to go down. The second damage values are for when your HP is 120 or less in Biohazard 2, because you basically get a defense boost after that point.

RE3 (JP)
Zombie: 20 (bite), 5 (leg bite or vomit)
Cerberus: 12 (bite)

Each zombie bite does 30 damage in the US RE3. I didn't have time to test much else from the American version.

Nemesis has 600 HP on easy mode, and 800 HP on hard mode. He falls down when his HP is reduced to half. Excess damage past half HP is wasted. For instance, if you use a rocket launcher (405 damage) on Nemesis on easy mode, he'll take 300 damage, then fall down. The rest of the damage won't go through.

I also have some weapon damage values, but I mostly only tested early game stuff.

RE1
vs Zombie
Handgun: 12 (50 with the silver M92F critical hit)
Knife: 8
Shotgun: 43 to 53 (range dependent)

vs Cerberus
Handgun: 27 (60 with critical hit)
Knife: 30

In RE1, the damage you deal is dependent on what mode you're playing on, as well as which character you're using. On normal mode, Jill's handgun does 12 damage to zombies, but if you're playing as Chris, you're only doing 9 per shot, despite the fact that it's the exact same gun. Initial testing showed that the damage you deal in Arrange mode is the same, while Jill was doing 18 damage with the handgun in Beginner mode. The knife did 14 damage in Beginner.

>> No.4887097

>>4887078
In RE2, I only got to test a handful of weapons on zombies. Starting with RE2, handgun damage is variable depending on how far away you are from the target. The closer you are, the more damage it does.

vs Zombie
Handgun: 14/15/16 (distance)
Knife: 3
SMG: 4

Despite the fact that Leon and Claire's handguns have different magazine capacities, they deal the same amount of damage per shot. Also, you read it right; the knife does a whopping 3 damage per hit.

I didn't do extensive testing in the US version of RE3, so I don't know if weapon damage is the same in that version or not. It should be, but you never know.

vs Zombie
Handgun: 13/14/16 (distance)
Knife: 10
Shotgun: 50/70/90 (distance)
Magnum: 600 (!)
Assault Rifle: 8 (per shot, auto or manual)

The shotgun and magnum are programmed to auto-kill zombies with headshots, regardless of how much HP they have. I tested this by setting a normal zombie's HP to around 3000, which is also how I got the damage for magnum body shots. Magnum body shots will always kill a zombie, and decapitate it, but they're actually different from close-range headshots with the magnum in the programming, since the body shots deal (excessive) damage, rather than the auto-kill effect of the headshot.

As mentioned before, Nemesis has 600 HP on easy mode, 800 HP on hard mode. He basically has two pools of HP, because you can't damage him past half HP until after he starts to fall down. Here's what the various weapons do to him.

Knife: 10
Handgun(Normal): 15/17/19 (distance)
Handgun(Enhanced): 25/27/29 (distance)
Merc Handgun: 15/17/19 (distance)
Eagle 6.0: 15/17/19 (distance) 65 (critical hit)
Shotgun(Normal): 30/35/45 (distance)
Shotgun(Enhanced): 45/50/60 (distance)
Western Custom: 30/35/45 (distance)
Magnum: 65
Assault Rifle: 8
Grenade Launcher: 55
Flame Grenade: 70 (direct hit) 1 (flames)
Acid Grenade: 65
Freeze Grenade: 85 (direct hit) 1 (ice)
Mine Launcher: 5 (direct hit) 30 (explosion)
Mine L.(Homing): 40 (direct hit) 30 (explosion)
Gatling Gun: 16
Rocket Launcher: 405

Because he's such a durable target, I went through the trouble of using the entire arsenal against him. It's much easier to get damage values against Nemesis, since he can take some hits.

You want to use the basic handgun, and make some ammo for it using gunpowder first.

Stay at mid distance, never too close, never too far.
Fire 2-3 shots, run away to mid distance on the other side, repeat.
Always dodge on his right arm, the arm he doesn't attacck with.

Btw, drops aren't linked to encounters. What I mean is drop 1 isn't linked to the first encounter, but you get it when you knock out Nemesis the first time, meaning that if you miss en encounter, it will delay what you get and you won't be able to get everything.

There are 2 encounters which don't count: in the train, and when you play as Carlos.
Also, depending on what decisions you make, you can get two free drops, but he'll still get up after those two. Those two still count as the same encounter, no need to knock him out again.

>CV is real RE3

I'm impressed the thread lasted this long before the meme showing up... anyway, here we go again:

The first time CV was EVER mentionned was at a TGS in October 1998 with a 20 secs video, and 1 month before with 3 screenshots given to the press.
It was already called Biohazard: Code Veronica, as you can see in the piC.

September-October 1998 is a YEAR before RE3 was released.

Finally, Capcom had a contract with Sony to have 3 numbered RE title with them. Therefore, even if CV was released after 3, the only way they're getting away with developping it for Dreamcast is if it's not a main title. It was never RE3 and it was a spin off.

The confusing development of RE3 probably didn't help. At first, there were talks of a RE3 for PS2 (not, this had nothing to do with CV as stated above), and people even inside the dev team didn't agree of what RE3 should have been (a spin off, Mikami even wanting it to be an add-on for RE2, idea which lasted about 3 days because he, as a producer, got turned down).

Finally I think the confusion also comes from the fact that both titles were being developped at the same time, and from the press. You know how the press talks about "Duke Nukem 4!" and "Silent Hill 5!" even though those titles were never an official thing? Try that with 2 games of the same series being worked on at the same time.

>> No.4896718

You know, run around and kill everything, pick up so much ammo, create ammo, not really need to worry about survival, like what also happened later in 4, 5, 6, Operation Raccoon City, Umbrella Corps, pretty much 7.

There will probably never be another Resident Evil game that has the same survival horror style that 1, 2, and CV had. 7 almost had it, but sadly it just couldn't hit it right because it just has so many pickups that it doesn't feel like you even need to try to survive, unless you're playing on Madhouse. It had a really nice theme though, I liked the mix of running around an RE1 style map and having patrolling enemies like Nemesis from RE3.

>> No.4898952

>>4898895
RE3 is still survival horror, unlike RE4 and the other games you mentionned

Survival horror is action-adventure with a horror theme and survival gameplay mechanics

Adventure mechanics in RE3: figuring out what to do, where to go, solving puzzles; making choices which impact the story

Survival mechanics: limited inventory, management of supplies, dodging and fleeing is as much encouraged if not more as fighting is, Nemesis chasing you everywhere

Horror: death everywhere, gore, scares, lonelessness and apocalyptic feeling, tension that makes you on your toes all the time and fighting impossible odds with Nemesis and the fact that the entire situation seems hopeless

Action: twice based controls used to flee and fight

But what makes RE3 so great is that it manages to be a great action game at the same time; but it's still survival horror because of all these elements, which is the difference with a game like Dino Crisis 2 which lacks the horror element and is almost purely action as the adventure elements are dubbed down to the bare minimum.

RE4 also lacks the survival, adventure, and horror elements which are all dubbed down as well. In b4 "inventory and supplies management also applies", well yes, but not to the same extent at all.
For instance RE4 encourages fighting first and foremost. Also the game is literally designed so you can't run out of supplies: not only enemies drops supplies, which by design is anti-survival horror, but on top of that those drops are programmed so that the fewer handgun ammo and healing items you have, the more likely they are to be dropped.

as far as video game genre defining goes, survival is about gameplay mechanics, not feelings or difficulty. Otherwise, Doom would be a survival horror on Nightmare difficulty but not on easy, which makes no sense.

RE4 has drops programmed so you're never likely to run out, it has shops, it's all about the shooting whereas enemy placement and behaviour in RE1/2/3 encourages dodging, etc etc those are the mechanics which make the difference for genre defining

In RE1 there is enough gun ammo to kill every enemy (not counting infinitely respawning ones). It also has a fuckton of healing items, + using sprays has no impact on rank and bonus items earned.

What makes it survival horror is the way you get that ammo, the way it's hidden and you have to look for it, the way you have to manage it, the way the game encourages dodging and fleeing with its enemy placement and even with its bosses, etc

Any idea where to download the Mediakite version? Can't find it myself and I can't submit my run because I'm using Sourcenext, which is pretty dumb

Anyone else been emulating RE2? Pulled out a old ass monitor I got back at goodwill a few years back for $10 bucks and have been emulating it via Dolphin. Been working like a dream.

ive been playing re1-3 on my psp through official PS1 classics. I hear the emulation of Ps1 games on psp are supposed to be real good, and a well known re speedrunner vouches for them.

My god, finished RE1(arrange) 3 days ago and I can garantee it I had more spare ammo than my playthrough of RE3 . Only thing is that chris inventory is an ass. People should stop memeing about RE1. RE3 is the prodigy of the generation.

Is it just me or does the shotgun you get from nemesis kinda suck? It's of course quicker than the normal one but it is absolutely shit for headshots. It was a bit of a let down after getting the eagle

It has wider spread, but shorter distance; higher firing rate and a shorter down time after shooting.

You need to be closer for headshots because of the shorter distance, but it has many other advantages. I love it personally.

I read about what happened to Hyrule Town in OoT as a kid, somehow never saw pictures, so for the entirety of playing the child section for the first time, I had these vivid images of the destroyed town playing out. For some reason I imagined a scene where Link was running over a small bridge inside the town.

>RE2 was very much like a big summer blockbuster.
is this supposed to be some grand revelation? it's exactly why I love RE2.

I think the people recently "realising" that RE2 isn't as good as they thought have gotten wrapped up in thinking it's something it isn't, and holding it to those standards.

Oh I agree. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing at all. I enjoyed all the main RE games including 6 and never minded the action movie direction at all. Hell, RE1 ends with Jill/Chris wasting the Tyrant with a rocket launcher and then escaping in the chopper before the whole place blows. It’s not like it was deep, psychological horror or anything.

Most reasonable answer: the size of items that can be picked up are programmed to vary depending on how far they are from the camera.

In both cases the items are located in rooms below. Perhaps the rooms are loaded together, makes sense in the case of RE3 since you get to jump out of the window without a big loading screen in between.

Just talking out of my ass though.

There's a normally inaccessible room below the newspaper, with two red herbs. To access it, you have to choose "Jump out of the window" when Nemesis comes.
The glitch here is that herbs are rendered in 3D, and they're rendered according to the distance you are from them. However, some value is overwritten and you can see the herbs below through the wall.

You can do the same with a gameshark. Turn on "walk through walls", and you can see that stuff that's rendered in 3D (doors, herbs, item boxes) show up from a distance, way before you can reach them.

After replaying REmake and 0 just after having played 1/2/3, I think I finally nailed why I always have so much more fun playing 1/2/3 instead.

It's the controls, or rather the animations. 1/2/3 are tight, responsive, very fast. In REmake and 0, and ESPECIALLY in 0, all the animations have a bazillion frames and last forever, for character moves but also for enemies. The result *looks* smooth, but doesn't play as tight.
Too often it feels like I'm not in command because the game decided to showcase how many frames they could cram into an animation.
You know, when you missed a zombie headshot using the shotgun because the shotgun wasn't all the way up but in between? Fuck that shit.
Oh, and how long am I going to have to tap those buttons because the "enemy grabs me" animation lasts forever, it's not like it adds any tension, it's just boring.

A good example of technical advancement deteriorating gameplay. RE1/2/3 will always play better.

and 0 has it even worse with Rebecca and how they decided to give her insane recoil time between shots, especially with the handgun and the magnum. Useless bitch, because of their shit I have to play as some made up fag who's never seen again. They should have given her 2 more inventory slots to balance her better, which would have also helped with their stupid item management system.
