In fact, what I thinks happens is that Levelord is trying to pass for visual beauty something that doesn't really have any direct relation to visual beauty. Something like neatness or orderliness, something like that.

And yes, from my personal standpoint, at their core, all the Levelord levels are primarily about their environmental design. My reasoning, shortly put, is something like that: trapstravaganza -> in order to predict the traps you are coerced to constantly look for subtle hints in environmental design (if it's not subtle enough, it's probably a trap bait, not a hint) -> which effectively means you are coerced, at any point of the level, to do something that looks, at least, from the outside, very similar to contemplating level art the way you do in art museum. Question is, what is it exactly you are meant to look at?

Why Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders has so damn good level design? There's not a single level that doesn't feel fresh and new, also the rooms are always very memorable so either you look at how beautiful they are or just remember about it so you find your way though the levels, in fact i never got stuck on this amazing game. I played that level the other day and thought it was really cool. Fighting the lich while also fighting against the water current was interesting. The powerups and inventory were a great addition. One gripe I have though is the lack of texture variety, but I can forgive it.
Also the final level (E5M8) is pretty lame, essentially being a single big room where you fight a bunch of maulotaurs.

I don't know, I think Levelord maps are just flat and blocky. His city levels in Duke in particular are just small deathmatch arenas with no scaling or perspective.

He happens to like putting unimportant stuff in his maps like the "Funny Boner Comedy Club" in XXX Stacy, and it got worse in his new maps in episode 5. Red Ruckus and Tour de Nukem are random maps with useless details everywhere, you can remove them and you get two decent usermaps from the community.

Pigsty is another good example. The inside parts are detailed as fuck with so many who cares references, but the outside is a complete and utter joke, we should have witnessed a car crash, and yet, we got just one blocky whatever sector.

This never happened in Blum's city levels, in fact, he preferred to use less details but moe perspective and scale, and the results were much better. Duke Burger for example really feels like a McDonald's, straight from the famous Beavis and Butthead episode. You never felt the same in Levelord maps, except for Abyss, and maybe Warp Factor.

Another Levelord map that should have been successful was his unreleased Sewer map. The level is clearly not finished with huge monster count (which meant different gameplay) and some unfinished gameplay elements and missing sounds, but the level's actual layout and design is brilliant. Unlike other Levelord maps, it's less detailed, but more grandiose in scaling and the two storey layout was very interesting with part 1 is a city level and part 2 is the sewer system below it.

Honestly, with some fine tuning modifications that map could have been easily the highlight of episode 3, and probably a top5 level in Duke Nukem.

I have fun with Doom's enemies because they each have behavior that's simple but still fun to work with. I think hordes ruin it because past a point you can't work with specific monsters by prioritizing some in a moment-to-moment basis, it all devolves into a shitty group that's spamming too many attacks to deal with each individually. Pic related is the only exposition the player gets. Then they're thrown into a series of claustrophobic levels fighting against gray-skinned intelligent marines. Additionally the player is hooked up to an instant-messaging system so they frequently receive messages from fellow marines, each talking about their mission progress, grievances, last words to the world, etc. They say the grayskins they are fighting against are called Silicates.

In between each level, a paragraph of this big "story chunk" is displayed to the player in those old-school intermission screens with some harrowing creepy noise ambience in the background:

The last level has the player transform himself into a gray-skinned Silicate, and is forced to face a human marine who guns him down and kills him. Very cinematic mod.

I can upload the content I have, if anyone's interested. The DECORATE/ZScript is essentially finished. All that remains is the shit-ton of level design, which I no longer have any drive to do. I feel like holding onto this idea to write a novel or something but I have original ideas five times a day so I don't think this story is anything special.

Its probably something like .50 beowulf or a similar round which is half inch bore but only has about as much firepower as a standard rifle round (possibly even 300win mag class).
What you get with it is alot of meat penetration and capability to smash through bones and carapace without the bullet being deflected as much. Ideal for taking on large animals (demons).
Defense Contractors for black ops sites like these could put out all sorts of crazy orders for equipment and since its tax dollars hard at work they would supply it and just wouldnt ask.

Ive had this assertion all along that the Nailguns for Quake 1 were just meant to take advantage of these large propellant driven nails (think of a Hilti stud driver) because they were planning on expanding settlements through the slipgates. Nailguns would have shit for range maybe 200 yards maximum even considering ballistic drop. But like metal crossbow bolts they have alot of takedown and armor penetrating power.
Standard Nailgun must be a prototype before the company requested a gatling version after which only the SNG would have been delivered to them.
But since there's thousands of these nails in packages due to the future construction needs it settles logistics, no need to stock belted 7.62mm ammo

I like SS2, i understand why it turned off a lot of the OG fans, but it was a fun romp. It felt like it had an identity, while the first 2 looked and felt extremely basic. I played the original two 3 times, once with a friend trough split screen, we didn't have a second mouse, so we both played on the same keyboard, i don't know how we managed to beat it. But nowadays i have no urge to revisit them, not even with the HD edition, once you know all the tricks it loses all the magic. SS3 was fun in places, but it had some really weird design choices that turned me off, like the constant hitscan, the janky executions that basically opened you up to enemy fire, if it wasn't for online co-op and respawns i definitely wouldn't have finished it. As for the few spin off's, fun but gimmicky, not much else to say. Overall, fun series, but not that interesting. Painkiller will always be the superior horde shooter in my opinion.

Everybody who has said big caliber slow bullets are inaccurate is dead wrong. The 45-70 especially a heavier 400 grain load can be used to hit shit 500-1000 yards away, it is a rainbow trajectory. You use a Ladder Sight ("artillery sight") to compensate for the bullet drop.

You're not applying Tactics properly. Not all FPS maps are a straight fight.

I've been playing Golden Souls 2, up to world three.

The presentation is great and everything looks and sounds sweet but the level design feels really off. It just doesn't feel organic, lots of boxy rooms and backtracking and no secrets (I wouldn't count the big coins, not all of them anyway). It just feels like a chore to get through sometimes.

Do you think quake's modding, and in fact most games', never took off because unlike Doom, Minecraft, and (arguibly) to a slightly lesser degree the TES series, quake mods are folders with loose files? is having mods that are in a single, compact file or centric to it (JARs, WAD/PK3, or ESP) an unnoticed perk to ease modding communities becoming frugal?
I am asking this because It's a pattern I keep noticing time and time again- single file mod systems are usually in games where it's trivial to use multiple mods at once, whereas loose folder mod games make using several at once hard er if not completely impossible.
If there was a sourceport of quake that expanded the game's capabilities akin to Forgemodloader or GZDoom (Arguibly unnecesary, to be fair, with Quake C), would you want it to also include single-file mods (I.E. a zip without compression, just to make things more compact) as a feature?

Sometimes, the pistol guy will stop, and instead of letting off a single shot, he'll let off a sadistic laugh and start just wildly rapid firing towards you for a random number of rounds (or until he empties his magazine).
This pretty much exists solely for flavor and for encouraging monster infighting.

I was thinking of implementing something similar with the shotgun guy, but I realize him magdumping (and thus killing you) would be really annoying and unfun, and that I cut out the supershotgun guy for that very reason.
