is there any hack/version/remake where the game actually counts all the times you jump over a barrel instead of randomly ignoring it?

every time Ive played it on MAME/a legit verison, it still swindles me

Hold Left/Right as you jump over a barrel (even if jumping vertically on the spot), this slightly increases the detection range for barrel jump scoring. This is also how the Donkey Kong jumping exploit works, if you stand next to him (usually on the rivet board for obvious reasons) and jump vertically and hit left and right immediately after jumping it extends the detection to overlap with him giving you the points for jumping "over" him.
Of course sometimes it just screws up when you jump a barrel, but that is what happens with games written 40 years ago.

it's like an olympic event, you only get points for doing it exactly right, if you fuck up and belly flop on the high dive you still made it into the water but it's considered improper and you get scored lower

The real arcade cabinet has a glitch where sometimes you won't get the points for jumping a barrel or multiple barrels. It doesn't happen very often but it's a random element that's just part of the game, it's just something you have to accept if you're competitively playing for score. Using a hacked ROM where you always get the points 100% of the time would be cheating.

That's implying you did something wrong during the execution, jumping over a barrel is either 'you did' or 'you didnt'
