There were so many great RTS games from the 90's, what happened to it all?

I remember playing this before the original and loving it to death
I did the same thing with Diablo on the PS

Starcraft64 was by far the worst game on the 64

They took all the cutscenes, in game dialogue, and briefing voice acting out to fit it onto the N64 cartridge.

You could select more than 12 units at a time though.

I've been playing SWAT 2 lately, game is fun once you get used to it. I love setting bombs and booby traps for the police and going out in a hail of bullets. Always have a crew of expendable suicidal terrorists. I'm pretty sure this game would not get made today.

I completely forgot you could play as the criminals in that game. That game was really cool.

Red Alert, Warcraft II and Civ II will always have places in my heart.

....but, on a side note, I actually played Warcraft 1, and almost liked it better than 2. It's got more creatures beyond variants of sheep and pigs, indoor missions, and even map details are better - there are bridges, roads etc., AND it actually looks less cartoony. Shame they seem to have just not bothered with any of that at all for some reason in WC2.

Yeah, it's pretty fun. On certain levels, the SWAT teams won't bum rush buildings right away if you don't hurt any hostages so it's a good time to set up traps and explosives at all the doors while they try to talk you down through negotiations. I always ask for money repeatedly and hope that one terrorist can slip away in the carnage after the hostages start getting shot and the bombs start blasting.

I always thought of games like Dune 2 and Command and Conquer as 'base building games'. It wasn't until I started getting magazines on a regular basis that i found that other folks called them RTS games.

I used to like building a base in C&C much more than using the units. C&C units are awkward and need looking after, the infantry gets run over and the tanks drive around in circles trying to exactly land on the waypoint you set and then they miss their target by not leading them right.

I prefer to claim land and build turrets and claim more land and build more turrets. Obviously, I'd get smooshed in multiplayer, but I don't play mp.

Can any anon recommend a game that's more 'base building' and less 'lotsa units'?
