This is a Dragon Quest thread ONLY for IV. Generals never do justice to this game.

Is DQIV the most ground-breaking DQ ? What chapter was your favorite? Who is your favorite character (and why is he Taloon) ? Is the episodic approach better than the choose-your-party method?

This is one of the few times I prefer remakes. The forced AI was a mistake, should've been optional like in later entries.

Taloon is the best character yeah. I spent weeks of in-game time just clocking in and out before realizing that's not what you're supposed to do. I thought for sure some event was going to trigger if I just kept doing my job.

Best battle theme of every DQ I've played (1-7)

>Is DQIV the most ground-breaking DQ ?
DQ3 is, the finale is radical
>What chapter was your favorite
chapter 5 by far
>Who is your favorite character
Taloon was my least used character in the final party, I preferred Ragnar and Alena

> Is the episodic approach better than the choose-your-party method?
I don't think so, I much preferred DQ3, though I was fond of 4.

Woah hey, I actually needed this thread.
What's the fan favorite version of DQ4?
I've never played it before, but I just beat 3 and I'm in a DQ mood.
I don't mind any translation patching, emulation, or whatever.

I can't make a good decision if I haven't played the game yet.

When I do the research, people seem to be torn between the DS and mobile versions, because the mobile version has an additional "party chat" feature that was removed from the DS version's stateside release.

From what I understand, the party chat wasn't present in the original NES release, rather it was carried over from the PS1 release, so I don't know how much it actually adds to the game.

It should also go without saying that the mobile version doesn't have physical buttons or a battery life, which is what DS version has over it.

>Is DQIV the most ground-breaking DQ?
No, it was 2 or 3.
What chapter was your favorite?
Is it cheating to say 5? If so, 3.
Who is your favorite character (and why is he Taloon)?
Because Taloon can steal extra loot, counter spells, stun or blind enemy parties, attack three times, boost the party's critical chance and appraise items. He is the most overpowered playable character of the entire series and that's saying something considering Gov exists.
>Is the episodic approach better than the choose-your-party method?
Yes.

Do you think Hocus Pocus is also the most broken spell in the series because it have like 1/20 chance of saving your life?

Here's my take on that matter: play DQ5 on DS. It's got the party chat function that DQ4DS would've had. That way you could see how extensive it is and whether you'd be bothered by its absence. Personally, I enjoyed that feature in 5 so much that I didn't bother with the DS version of 4 because I would miss it that much. However, your mileage may vary, I sometimes see people saying that it doesn't add much and is unnecessary.

Don't worry about playing out of order, 4 5 and 6 are much more loosely connected than the first 3.

The fuck are you talking about? Taloon's abilities work almost every time and the AI never sets them off if a regular attack would be better. I mean jesus, he can counterspell for free, are you fucking stupid or just a liar? Taloon NEVER does nothing, at least not on NES.

Party Chat wasn't in the original, who knows who wrote them. Probably some intern.

The nes one is perfectly playable. The only one I have played on the nes actually.

I don't know why but I have a hard time imagining Horii would just have someone else write all that dialogue. He's a little too auteur-y over DQ to do that, wouldn't you think?
